'Deadpool' Smashes Box Office Records On Way to $260 Million Worldwide Opening

14 February 2016 9:38 AM, PST | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Blowing away even the most lofty of expectations, Deadpool decimated the Valentine's and President's Day weekend box office in record-breaking fashion with an estimated $135 million three-day weekend. As for its incoming competition, How to be Single performed mostly as expected while fifteen years proved too long to wait to release Zoolander 2. Rewriting the box office record books, Deadpool broke Fifty Shades of Grey's previous February opening weekend record by nearly $45 million based on estimates and that's just the start. The largest opening for an R-rated film was previously $91.7 million, set by The Matrix Reloaded in 2003. That's been destroyed. The largest opening weekend for an R-rated comic book adaptation was previously set by 300 with $70.8 million. Bye, bye. This is even the largest opening weekend ever for 20th Century Fox, beating a record of $108.4 million previously held by Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. Though, to be fair, Revenge of the Sith »

The Marvel Character Deadpool Legally Wasn't Able To Use, But Did Anyway

5 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Spoiler Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Deadpool. If you haven't had a chance to see the film yet, and don't wish for any part of it to be ruined, please click away! During the big climactic battle scene in the third act of Deadpool, the titular anti-hero finds himself face-to-face with an old colleague named Bob. For most, this is probably seen as just another silly moment in a long line of silly moments in the film, but it's actually a special moment for fans who have followed The Merc With The Mouth in Marvel Comics, and a reference to DP's frequent companion/adversary, Bob, Agent From Hydra. It's a pretty cool little Easter Egg, but what makes it extra special is the fact that the blockbuster didn't actually have the rights to use that »

'Force Majeure' Director Ruben Ostlund Lines Up English Film & TV Show; Bruno Dumont To Shoot Joan of Arc Musical This Summer

6 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Every now and then, foreign filmmakers try to transition to a broader audience by tackling English language fare, and sometimes it pans out, and on other occasions they retreat back to their native tongue. And Ruben Ostlund, who earned plenty of acclaim for Force Majeur, is going to try and make the leap. Variety reports he's got two projects, one for the big screen, and another for the small. On the film front, Ostlund will helm "The Square" which will "most likely" be in English. The plot will revolve around a museum's attempt to drum up publicity for an altruistically themed exhibit that goes over the line. Casting is underway, and production will begin this summer, which likely means a return to Cannes next spring for Ostlund. Meanwhile, he's also working on a English TV comedy, »

Michael Moore Wants You Kids to Sneak Into His Latest R-Rated Movie

It’s fair to say most of us snuck into R-rated movies before we reached the magical age of 17. It’s easy to do, and you’d almost have to go out of your way to get caught, unless you went to a really strict movie theater. While plenty of kids and teens snuck in to see Deadpool […]

Meet the Director of BAFTA-Winning Jordanian Oscar Entry 'Theeb'

1 hour ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

The first thing you notice about Naji Abu Nowar is his plummy British accent. In fact, he was educated in London, and picked up the coveted BAFTA Sunday night for outstanding debut by a British director for "Theeb," which won the director's first prize at the 2014 Venice Horizons section, and eventually landed the Jordanian Oscar entry an Oscar nomination. Because "Theeb" is set among nomadic desert Arabs during the same troubled period as "Lawrence of Arabia," it's easy to cite the influence of David Lean, but while Nowar admires the director, "he was not an influence on this film," except as to how not to shoot day for night scenes. "Lean shot on sand, which reflects light with a blue twinge that I didn't like," Nowar told me on the phone. "We discovered that with black basalt volcanic rock in the desert, you don’t get the reflection in the day for night scenes. »

Watch: Why Jonathan Demme's 'Stop Making Sense' Is a Concert Film for the Ages

1 hour ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Jonathan Demme’s 1984 film documenting Talking Heads' three-night stand at the Hollywood Pantages is one of the great concert films of all time. Thanks to Heads frontman David Byrne’s ingenious staging, the film works in a narrative vein as well, beginning with Byrne alone on the stage fidgeting through the schizo rhythms of "Psycho Killer" and ending with the introverted singer transformed into a total party animal, speed-jogging around the stage to "Life During Wartime." Demme’s direction is simple yet elegant and the camera always seems to be in exactly the right place. One of the most joyful movies ever made, be sure to see (and hear) it with a proper sound system. »

Emma Thompson: UK would be 'mad not to' stay in EU

1 hour ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Alone in Berlin actor says she ‘feels European’, and that she would definitely vote to remain in Europe in the referendum

Emma Thompson called for Britain to stay in the European Union, saying the UK would be “mad not to”. Describing Britain as “a tiny little cloud-bolted, rainy corner of sort-of Europe, a cake-filled misery-laden grey old island”, Thompson said she “just felt European” and would “of course” vote to remain in the EU in the upcoming referendum. “We should be taking down borders, not putting them up.”

Thompson was speaking at a press conference in Berlin for the world premiere of Alone in Berlin, the screen adaptation of Hans Fallada’s 1947 novel about a German act of resistance to the Nazis in wartime Berlin. She plays Anna Quangel who, with her husband Otto (played by Brendan Gleeson), distributes anonymous handwritten postcards containing anti-Nazi messages around the city. Based on »

James Gunn Defends Marvel, Praises Deadpool, In Nsfw Rant

2 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Only three days after its release, Deadpool has taken the world by storm. The movie has already grossed approximately $150 million domestically, with a worldwide haul of about $282 million. Even better, it.s earned numerous positive reviews from both fans and critics, and a sequel has already been ordered. Despite it not being the first R-rated superhero movie, it.s certainly become the most high-profile one, but there are varying opinions on why Deadpool performed so well. For instance, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is taking issue with what one person attributed Deadpool.s success to over the weekend. Deadline recently published a comment from a "Hollywood suit" that complimented Deadpool for having a "self-deprecating tone" and said that Marvel Studios would never make fun of themselves like that. Strongly disagreeing with that opinion, Gunn took to his Facebook page to defend Marvel and explain why Deadpool was great. »

How Ryan Reynolds Surprised A Sick Deadpool Superfan With The Perfect Gift

Just in case you haven.t been paying attention, Deadpool took over the damn world this past weekend, raking in $150 million over the four-day holiday, smashing records in violent, profane fashion. The titular character may be prone to decapitating people, the crudest possible humor you can imagine, and generally walking a fine line between hero and murderer, but the actor who plays him, Ryan Reynolds, is a pretty solid dude, and hooked up a sick you Deadpool fan with one hell of a surprise. Connor McGrath is a young Canadian Deadpool fanatic who also happens to be battling High-Risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Thanks to Ryan Reynolds, he was also the first person outside of the studios and those involved with production to see Deadpool. Writing on his Facebook page, Reynolds revealed that six weeks ago he visited Connor in Alberta, Edmonton and showed him the movie. Connor is, at least »

Berlin Film Review: ‘Road to Istanbul’

2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

After two meandering dramas (“Just Like a Woman” and “Two Men in Town”) featuring Muslim characters on New Mexico soil, the French-born Algerian director Rachid Bouchareb abruptly veers into topical territory with “Road to Istanbul,” a compellingly one-sided portrait of a Belgian woman desperately trying to find the daughter who ran away from home to join the Islamic State in Syria. Set at the juncture where Third World problems unexpectedly become First World concerns, the film follows the mother (strongly played by Astrid Whettnall) with a single-minded intensity that, for better and for worse, treats the child’s motivations as a largely offscreen mystery. While some of the final scenes are played with a bluntness that strains credulity, overall this swift-moving tale has a spareness and simplicity that feel welcome after Bouchareb’s more strained recent efforts; the sad timeliness of its premise should translate into solid festival play and modest arthouse potential. »
