Super Bowl Weekend Preview: 'Panda 3' Over 'Hail, Caesar!', 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies' & 'The Choice'

9 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

It's Super Bowl weekend and some segments of the box office are likely to take a bigger hit than others. Last weekend's #1 film, Kung Fu Panda 3, won't be affected as much thanks to it being a family film, but adult-targeted features will be more susceptible. One such film is the new movie from the Coen brothers, Hail, Caesar!, which is hitting theaters alongside the period horror Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and The Choice, which looks to become the lowest grossing opener for a film based on a Nicholas Sparks novel. Overall, the top twelve is looking to finish around $100 million, down $36 million from the same weekend last year, though about $16 million ahead of 2015's Super Bowl weekend. Kung Fu Panda 3 will finish #1 for the second weekend in a row, dropping around 40-44%, bringing in around $23-25 million. Last year, after its $52.1 million opening, Home dropped 48.2% and »

London — Former “Friends” star Matt LeBlanc has been revealed as one of the new presenters of BBC motoring show “Top Gear.” LeBlanc’s appointment marks the first time the show has ever had a non-British host in its 39-year history.

He joins lead presenter Chris Evans on the revamped show, which is expected to return to TV screens in May.

LeBlanc commented: “As a car nut and a massive fan of ‘Top Gear,’ I’m honored and excited to be a part of this iconic show’s new chapter.”

Evans said of his new ‘Top Gear’ presenter: “Matt’s a lifelong fellow petrolhead and I’m thrilled he’s joining ‘Top Gear.’ Acting out our craziest car notions on screen is a dream job and I know we’ll both be debating some epic road trip ideas. We can’t wait to share what we’ve been up to on screen later this year. »

WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange to Surrender if UN Denies Appeal

20 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will surrender to British authorities on Friday if the UN rules against him.

In a statement on the WikiLeaks Twitter feed, Assange said he would “accept arrest” and leave the Ecuadorian embassy in London where he’s lived since 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he currently faces charges of sexual assault.

“Should the Un announce tomorrow that I have lost my case against the United Kingdom and Sweden, I shall exit the embassy at noon on Friday to accept arrest by British police, as there is no meaningful prospect of further appeal,” he said.

“However, should I prevail and the state parties be found to have acted unlawfully, I expect the immediate return of my passport and the termination of further attempts to arrest me.”

Assange and his supporters believe the rape allegations are an attempt to extradite him to the United States, where he »

It looks like director Steven Soderbergh is coming out of movie retirement for Hillbilly Heist...

It’s been the best part of three years since Steven Soderbergh revealed his retirement from the world of feature films, apparently signing off with Behind The Candelabra. But it looks as though he may have had an about turn.

Variety is reporting that Soderbergh is set to direct the upcoming feature Hillbilly Heist. Not much is known about the movie thus far, short of the fact that both Matt Damon and Channing Tatum are set to star in it. Apparently, Soderbergh saw the script recently, and “quickly fell in line with the premise”.

Several studios are reportedly interested in backing the new project, and more details are likely to be around at the end of next week. As and when we find out more, we’ll let you know…

Helen Mirren Thinks ‘It’s Unfair to Attack the Academy’ for #OscarsSoWhite

10 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Helen Mirren thinks it’s “unfair” for people to blame the Academy for the diversity issue that has been the center of debate since the Academy failed to nominate actors of color for the second year in a row. “I think it’s unfair to attack the Academy,” Mirren said in an interview with Channel 4 News in the U.K., which posted Wednesday. “It just so happens this year, it went that way.” While she isn’t dismissing the fact that no person of color was honored in the Oscar nominations this year, she does believe that the issue »

Baskets Recap: Clown Meets Coyote

37 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

In tonight's chronicle of the world's most serious clown, we step outside the rodeo and enter the realm where Chip Baskets truly becomes his most unintentionally clownish: Marriage. We first met Chip's French wife Penelope in the pilot, when she agreed to marry this doughy man as her ticket to America. "I don't love you. I don't find you very attractive," she told him. At least she was up front about her intentions. But Chip is ever an optimist — or, if you will, a sucker. As his financial and personal situation craters around him, he still harbors hope of a reconciliation with Penelope. (Even that term seems misplaced, though, since there doesn't appear to have been any, ahem, conciliation.) After scoring a plump insurance check — from that time Martha destroyed his scooter — Chip's only thought is how to impress Penelope. And if you thought being kicked in the »

Amber Riley Is Going to Star in a West End Dreamgirls Revival and You, and You, and You, You're Gonna Love Her

38 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Amber Riley, who has been preparing for this role ever since the first season of Glee, will soon play Effie White in Dreamgirls. Riley, who recently appeared as Addaperle in The Wiz Live!, will take the stage at the Savoy Theatre in the 1981 musical's November revival. White, an analogue for Florence Ballard, the ousted original member of the Supremes, gets the iconic torch song "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going," which defintely helped Jennifer Hudson earn her Oscar when she played the role in 2006's film adaptation. Glee took full advantage of Riley's pipes — and the fact that her character was constantly passed over for the more conventionally attractive Rachel Berry — to have her sing several of Effie's songs on the show. So you might say Riley's pretty well prepared. »

Jeff Wells: 'Spotlight' has 'it' in the Oscar Best Picture race (podcast)

2 hours ago | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

To Jeff Wells (Hollywood Elsewhere), Oscar punditry isn't about weighing stats or revisiting past kudos history. He's cinema's own Don Quixote, an idealist who's stunned and even a little bit offended if you dare to suggest that the Oscar race is more about politics and personalities than a noble quest to define the year's best films. That's what makes Jeff so much fun to chat with at this time of year. He gets emotionally invested. When he makes Oscar predictions, "I go with what I think the gods are telling me should happen and I just can't embrace statistical likelihoods," he says in our podcast chat (listen below) while referring to the kind of Oscar pundit clashes that Pete Hammond and I do.  "All of that is very entertaining. I love posting it. You and Pete are my favorites, but I can't embrace it. " So where does he think the »

You, Me and the Apocalypse Recap: Very British Chaos

2 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Last week, I had trouble pinpointing a way to adequately describe You, Me and the Apocalypse, but I think I've finally got it. This show is NBC's Game of Thrones.Think about it: It's a sprawling epic, a British import, the characters often face dire consequences, and it's even got that one guy from Game of Thrones. (Joel Fry, who plays Dave, also played Hizdahr zo Loraq, that rich guy in Meereen who was engaged to Daenerys.) Plus, much like Game of Thrones, the map of the world in which You, Me and the Apocalypse takes place keeps expanding. This week's new spot on the map is Washington, D.C., where we meet Scotty McNeil (Kyle Soller), who works for the U.S. Special Situations Department, which may or may not be a real thing. Basically, Scotty's expertise is cataclysmic disaster — like, for example, how to prevent humanity from being »
