Fuji 16mp vs 24mp - closer than you think

Fuji JPGs really do lose a lot of detail compared to RAW. In fact, if you are a JPG only shooter, your out-of-camera 24Mp JPG won't really have any practical advantage over a 16Mp RAW when it comes to details.

Here's my experiment.

  1. Convert a 16Mp RAW to TIFF
  2. Upsample TIFF to 24Mp and save as JPG
  3. Compare to an out-of-camera Xpro-2 JPG

You be the judge. These are 100% crops. I know someone is going to say  "but the exposure is different". Well, be my guest and try it yourself if you think such a small difference in brightness will make much of a difference in details. The tools I used are all free: Rawtherapee and FastStone for upsampling.
