Antelope
Antelope are found primarily on the arid short grass prairies of the western United States. South Dakota hosts one of the highest antelope populations in the nation, ranging across the west and central regions.
Antelope rely on their peripheral vision, the safety of their herds, and their ability to reach speeds of nearly 60 miles per hour to detect and elude predators, which may include coyote, bobcats, and golden eagles. Their long rump hair is erected when the animal is frightened, serving as a warning "flash" to others. They are curious animals that often flee to the top of a nearby ridge and pause to look back.
