Hunting and Fishing Licenses

RESIDENT COMBINATION LICENSES

Residents, 19 or over, to fish (including taking frogs and turtles) and hunt small game including pheasant, grouse, partridge, quail, cottontail rabbit, and tree squirrel. You may also hunt all species which may be taken with the Predator/Varmint lLicense, including coyote, red and gray fox, skunk, raccoon, badger, prairie dog, ground squirrel (gopher), crow, jackrabbit, porcupine and marmot. This license does not include furbearer (trapping) privileges.

(Ages 65 & up)
Residents, 65 or over, to fish (including taking frogs and turtles) and hunt small game including pheasant, grouse, partridge, quail, cottontail rabbit, and tree squirrel. You may also hunt all species which may be taken with the Predator/Varmint lLicense, including coyote, red and gray fox, skunk, raccoon, badger, prairie dog, ground squirrel (gopher), crow, jackrabbit, porcupine and marmot. This license does not include furbearer (trapping) privileges.

Resident Junior Combination
(Ages 16-18)

Resident youth age 16 to 18 to hunt Pheasant, Grouse, Partridge, Quail, Cottontail Rabbit, Squirrel, Waterfowl, Coyote, Fox, Skunk, Raccoon, Badger, Prairie Dog, Ground Squirrel, Crow, Jackrabbit, Gopher, Porcupine, Marmot, AND fish, take frogs or turtles AND hunt anything on a shooting preserve for which the preserve is licensed.

  • Since the Junior Combination License cost the same or less than annual small game and annual fishing license by themselves, we have made the Junior Combination the ONLY choice for juniors, with the exception of daily small game and fishing licenses, and the predator/varmint license.

Resident Reduced Fee Hunting & Fishing Card for persons with total disability and certain veterans - South Dakota residents who qualify and are approved will be issued a Disabled/Veteran Hunting and Fishing Card for a $10 fee that is good for 4 years. More >

Residents age 19 or older to hunt pheasant, grouse, partridge, quail, cottontail rabbit, and tree squirrel. You may also hunt all species allowed with a Predator/Varmint License including coyote, red and gray fox, skunk, raccoon, badger, prairie dog, ground squirrel (gopher), crow, jackrabbit, porcupine and marmot.

Resident 1-Day Small Game Residents age 16 or older to hunt pheasant, grouse, partridge, quail, cottontail rabbit, and tree squirrel for a one-day period and take only one daily limit per species. In addition, this license allows you to hunt all species which may be taken with the Predator/Varmint License, including coyote, red and gray fox, skunk, raccoon, badger, prairie dog, ground squirrel (gopher), crow, jackrabbit, porcupine and marmot for the entire license year.

Resident Youth Small Game
(ages 12-15)
Resident youth under age 16 to hunt Pheasant, Grouse, Partridge, Quail, Cottontail Rabbit, Squirrel, Waterfowl, Opossum, Mink, Weasel, Beaver, Muskrat, Bobcat, Coyote, Fox, Skunk, Racoon, Badger, Prairie Dog, Ground Squirrel, Crow, Jackrabbit, Gopher, Porcupine, Marmot, and anything on a shooting preserve. No license is required for youth under 16 to hunt Predator/Varmints or trap Furbearers.

Resident Migratory Bird Certification Migratory birds that require this certification for hunting include ducks, geese, tundra swan, Sandhill crane, mourning, snipe and coot.

Resident Furbearer

Trapping coyote, red and gray fox, skunk, raccoon, badger, bobcat, opossum, mink, weasel, beaver and muskrat. This license is also required to hunt bobcat, opossum, mink, weasel, beaver and muskrat. Muskrat may only be shot in specific areas - please consult the current Hunting Handbook. This license includes the privileges of the Predator/Varmint License. No license is required for youth under 16 to hunt Predator/Varmints or trap Furbearers.

Resident Predator/Varmint Hunting (but not trapping) coyote, red fox, grey fox, skunk, prairie dog, jackrabbit, gopher, ground squirrel, crow, porcupine, marmot. No license is required for youth under 16 to exercise these privileges.

Resident Annual Fishing Resident fishing, taking frogs or turtles. Youth 16 to 18 must purchase the Junior Combination License, which includes fishing, as well all hunting privileges, for the same cost. Resident youth under age 16 are not required to have a fishing license.

Resident Nursing Facility Group License Nursing homes applying for this license must be licensed by the state as a nursing facility. The license only applies to permanent residents of the nursing home. It does not apply to staff or employees of the nursing home.

This license includes the privileges of the Predator/Varmint License and the Shooting Preserve License.

Allows nonresident to hunt on any licensed shooting preserve and take only the small game for which that preserve is licensed. You may also hunt all species allowed with a Predator/Varmint License including coyote, red and gray fox, skunk, prairie dog, ground squirrel (gopher), crow, jackrabbit, porcupine and marmot, but only on a shooting preserve during the period that this license is valid.

  • Nonresident youth, under age 16, should purchase the less expensive Youth Small Game license, which includes (2) 5-day periods of general small game hunting in addition to the shooting preserve privileges above.

NON-RESIDENT FISHING LICENSES
License Privileges this license allows:

Nonresident Family Fishing Allows a nonresident and immediate family (children under age 16 and spouse) to fish throughout the license period. The combined harvest of all family members covered by this license may not exceed one daily limit and one possession limit for each species.

Nonresident Youth: Option 1 (Youth Annual Fishing License) Nonresident youth under age 16 who wish to keep their own limit of fish and/or fish on their own may purchase the Youth Annual Fishing License which allows all the privileges of the adult Annual Fishing License.

Nonresident Youth: Option 2 Nonresidents under age 16 do not need a fishing license when fishing with a parent or guardian who has a valid South Dakota fishing license. The youth's fish must be included in the daily and possession limit of the parent or guardian. Youth wishing to take their own limit of fish may purchase a nonresident fishing license.

* Fee includes $6 surcharge mandated by state law. Money derived from this surcharge is dedicated to hunting access and wildlife damage management programs.

Fluorescent Orange

Big game licensees hunting with a firearm in SD must wear at least one exterior garment of fluorescent orange while hunting. Garments include hat, shirt, vest, jacket, coat or sweater. Turkey hunters do not need to wear fluorescent orange.

Firearms

It is illegal to use an auto-loading or self-loading firearm capable of holding more than six cartridges to hunt big game; or capable of being operated as a full automatic to hunt big game or small game. Only soft point or expanding bullets are permitted.
