Caring for your children's eyes

As a parent you'll want to give your child the best start in life, which is why looking after their eyes is important. Here are some simple ways to look after your child's eyesight:

Did you know 80% of a child's learning is through sight?

Have regular eye checks

Regular eye checks are particularly important in childhood because they:

  • Check how well your child can see
  • Look at how healthy their eyes are
  • Help identify problems early to prevent them developing

Children usually have their eyes checked by a health visitor when they are a year old. It's advisable to check them again at about age three, when they are learning and developing rapidly, then every year until they are 16.

Did you know all children can get free NHS-funded eye checks every year until they turn 16?

If your child needs glasses, you can also get an NHS voucher towards the cost, which means many of our pairs are free.

Protect their eyes from the sun

Just like skin, our eyes need protecting from the sun.

Children's eyes are more vulnerable to sun damage because they have larger pupils and clearer lenses, and they tend to spend more time outdoors.

This means up to 80% of UV exposure happens before the age of 18.

Because UV is present even on cloudy days sun protection is important all year, which is why all our prescription sunglasses and glasses offer UV protection on the front and back of the lens as standard.

Feed them a healthy diet

A healthy balanced diet is as important for the eyes as it is for the rest of the body.

Vitamin A, found in cheese and eggs, and zinc, found in bread and meat, are just two nutrients which help maintain vision.

Vitamins C and E found in fruits and vegetables, like oranges and nuts, are closely associated with eye health.

A diet rich in green leafy vegetables may also help reduce the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, the UK's leading cause of visual impairment.
