Hollywood’s Diversity Crisis: 7 Facts Overlooked in the Current Furor

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Diversity was the No. 1 topic at Saturday’s SAG Awards, and will remain front and center at the DGA, WGA and every other guild’s awards through the Feb. 28 Oscars. It’s crucial that this issue be addressed again, and the upside is that Hollywood is under pressure like never before. But amid this controversy, there’s a danger that film execs will continue to do what they’ve done for decades: Overdose on the protests and the backlash, form a committee and talk even more, rather than take action.

Here are seven reasons for hope and concern about the discussion.

These protests have been going on for decades.

Variety has been reporting on Hollywood’s racial imbalance since the 1950s. The big difference in 2016 is that the media has exploded, so the conversation is louder and more persistent. That’s good because it keeps the heat on Hollywood. But, »

Did 'Grease: Live' Set a New Standard for Judging TV Musicals?

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

When Fox first announced it was going to air a live version of the popular stage and film sensation "Grease," there wasn't much to be said outside of, "Well, here comes another live TV musical." While plenty of people were excited to hear some of their favorite musical numbers performed on live TV (and see Julianne Hough as both the good and bad versions of Sandy), no one really expected anything all that ambitious. But what we got Sunday night was ambitious — at least, from a production standpoint. With the camera swirling around expansive sets as the stars hand-jived their way through elaborately choreographed numbers, most critics and audience members alike agreed "Grease: Live" took the modern take on live musicals to a new level. The direction and production didn't just take full advantage of their multiple stages across the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, CA, but drew attention to »

Relativity Bankruptcy: Financial Adviser Praises Debt Reduction

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Updated: Relativity Media has raised only $20 million of the approximately $100 million it hoped to raise in equity financing as it looks to emerge from bankruptcy, but Joseph Nicholas, an investor in the company, said there were more than 50 parties interested in putting money in the company.

“We definitely can raise the money…it’s really about what kind of valuation will we be able to raise it at,” Nicholas testified in U.S. Bankruptcy Court on Monday.
