Olympus Japan has announced the Stylus SH-3, a relatively minor update to the SH-2 model introduced last March. The SH-3 offers 4K video at 15 fps and gains a half dozen new Art Filters. Otherwise, it features the same 16MP BSI CMOS sensor as the SH-2, as well as its predecessor's 25-600mm equivalent F3.0-6.9 24x optical zoom lens, 5-axis image stabilization and night scene capture mode. Danish camera manufacturer Phase One has expanded its range of A-Series offerings to include the new 100MP IQ3 digital back. The A-Series kits consist of an Alpa 12TC camera body with one of three lenses and a choice of IQ3 backs in 50-, 60-, 80- and 100 megapixel resolutions. The A-Series is particularly interesting as the cameras have no mirror, so vibrations are kept to a minimum at the time of exposure. Read more

Last month, Fujifilm unveiled the X-Pro2 mirrorless camera with a February 18 release date. Per a statement issued late last week, the camera maker has postponed the release until early March due to an unspecified production delay and higher than anticipated global orders. Read more

This week, GoPro announced it will discontinue three of its six available action cameras and abandon the entry-level market. This follows the company's preliminary fourth quarter results showing poor holiday sales, leading to staff layoffs. Read more

Nikon shooters have waited a long time for a D300S replacement, and it appears that they're going to have to keep waiting a little longer. Nikon Japan has released a statement pushing the D500's initial March release to late April 2016. Read more

Sony has introduced the long-awaited update to its popular a6000 mirrorless camera: the a6300. Canon has announced its new flagship DSLR, the EOS-1D X Mark II. In September 2015, Ricoh published a teaser website for a Pentax full-frame DSLR set to launch in spring 2016. Additional teasers have been released on occasion since the website went live, including a new one today. In a move intended to honor the giant panda - a Chinese national treasure - German camera manufacturer Leica has produced a limited edition version of its M-P (Typ 240) rangefinder that is finished in black and white. The 'Panda Edition' will consist of a pair of kits that include the camera body along with either a Summicron-M 28mm F2 ASPH lens or a Summilux-M 35mm F1.4 ASPH. Read more

Olympus has announced the revival of its classic 1960s half-frame film camera in digital form – the 20MP PEN-F. The first digital PEN to feature a built-in viewfinder, it offers an impressive 2.36 Million-dot OLED panel as well as a fully articulating LCD. Read more

German camera manufacturer Leica has announced a waterproof, shock-proof and dust-proof compact camera that uses an APS-C sensor. The Leica X-U (Typ 113) joins the X family of compacts, but offers waterproofing to 15m / 50ft and a body that is designed to be used both beneath and above the waves. Read more

Fujifilm has released the long-awaited followup to its flagship X-Pro1 mirrorless camera, aptly named the X-Pro2. While similar in design to its predecessor, virtually everything else about the X-Pro2 is new, including its 24MP X-Trans sensor, 273-point Hybrid AF system, 2.36M-dot 'Advanced Hybrid Multi Viewfinder', an electronic shutter, refined controls and menus, and a lot more.

Fujifilm has announced the X70, a fixed-lens compact camera designed in the spirit of the company's X100-series. While the X70 features the same 16MP APS-C-size X-Trans CMOS sensor as the X100T, it has a wider and slower lens (28mm equiv. F2.8) and lacks that clever hybrid viewfinder. What it does offer is Fujifilm's first touchscreen LCD, a max ISO of 51200, an electronic shutter, 1080/60p video and, of course, plenty of direct controls. Read more

The Fujifilm X-E2S is an update to the company's premium rangefinder-style mirrorless camera, the X-E2, which was introduced back in 2013. New features include an improved AF system, an electronic shutter, top ISO sensitivity of 51200, and an improved grip and refined menu interface. It has the same 16.3MP X-Trans sensor, 3" LCD, high-res electronic viewfinder and Wi-Fi functionality as its predecessor. Read more

Fujifilm has released the FinePix XP90, a relatively minor update to last year's XP80 rugged camera, with the main new feature being a larger and sharper LCD. As with its predecessor, the XP90 is waterproof to 15m/50ft, shockproof from 1.8m/5.8ft, freezeproof and dustproof. It sports a 16MP CMOS sensor, 28-140mm lens and Wi-Fi connectivity - and it can double as an action cam. Read more

Global tech giant Google could be joining the camera business if a patent it was awarded this month is anything to go by. Filed in June 2014 and just approved on the 12th January this year, the patent issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office is for a design for a folding camera that's hinged in the middle like a clamshell mobile phone. A solar-powered action camera that can take 70% of its charge from the sun in just 30 minutes has been announced by Activeon. The Solar X uses a 16MP CMOS sensor to shoot a combination of stills and video footage, and can supplement its two-hour internal battery with four hours of additional charge from a pair of solar panels mounted on its detachable charging case. Kodak has announced that it is to launch its first new Super 8 cine camera in over thirty years, with a model that mixes analogue and digital technology. The new camera, which doesn’t appear to have a name other than Kodak Super 8 Camera, will record its movies on normal Super 8 film cartridges but uses a digital LCD flip-out panel as viewfinder. Olympus has updated its rugged compact lineup with the Stylus Tough TG-870, a modest update to last year's model offering next-generation GPS and a brighter, higher-resolution screen. Still sporting a 16MP BSI-CMOS chip and a 21-105mm equivalent zoom, the TG-870 provides a 920k-dot, 180 degree flip-up LCD that claims to be 1.1x brighter than its predecessor's screen. Read more

Nikon has formally announced its D5 professional DSLR, a 21MP full frame capable of shooting at up to 12fps with AF and 14fps without. The camera features an all-new autofocus module with 153 points, 99 of which are cross-type, sensitive to both horizontal and vertical detail. It's also Nikon's first DSLR to be capable of 4K video capture and its first high-end camera to include a touchscreen.

Nikon has announced a shockproof and waterproof spherical 360-degree action camera. Called KeyMission 360, it promises to 'put 360 virtual reality in the hands of any enthusiast' and offers 4K UHD recording. Shockproof to 2m / 6.6 ft and waterproof to 30m / 100 ft, the camera includes electronic VR stabilization and houses an image sensor and lens on opposite sides of the device to create immersive stills and video. Read more

Nikon has announced the much-anticipated followup to its D300S, the 21MP D500 which the company calls its 'best enthusiast DX offering.' It features the same 153-point AF system and EXPEED 5 processor. It can shoot continuously at 10 fps with a 200 shot buffer for Raw images. It can also capture 4K/UHD video and also features 'SnapBridge', a constant connection to a smartphone using Bluetooth, similar to what Samsung did with its NX1. The D500 will be available from March at a cost of around $2000. Read more

Panasonic has announced the Lumix DMC TZ100 / ZS100, the first compact superzoom camera to include a 1"-type sensor. Despite having a sensor four times larger than most travel zoom cameras, the ZS100 manages to incorporate a 25-250mm equivalent zoom into a very small body. It also finds room for a built-in viewfinder and two full dials. It shoots 4K video and incorporates a host of related features, many of which utilize its touchscreen rear LCD. Read more

Panasonic has updated its compact travel zoom lineup with the Lumix DMC-ZS60, which is known as the TZ80 outside of North America. While it shares the design and lens of its predecessor, the ZS50, there's a new 18MP MOS sensor and Venus Engine processor under the hood. The autofocus system now uses the company's Depth from Defocus technology for a major speed boost, and 4K video recording, 4K photo and post focus features on board, as well. More details

Canon has introduced three new PowerShot ELPHs, serving as the company's entry-level cameras. The models include the ELPH 360 HS, which has a 20MP BSI CMOS sensor and 12X zoom, the ELPH 190 IS with a 20MP CCD and 10X zoom, and the basic ELPH 180 with an 8X zoom and digital image stabilization. Canon has refreshed its midrange superzoom lineup with the new PowerShot SX540 HS and SX420 IS. The former has the same design and 24-1200mm lens as the SX530 that came before it but adds more pixels and processing power, 1080/60p video and a new feature which keeps a subject centered at full telephoto. The SX420 follows in the footsteps of the SX410 and offers a 20MP CCD, 24-1008mm lens, 720p video and Wi-Fi with NFC. Read more

Phase One has announced a 100MP back for its modular XF medium format camera system, which is uses a CMOS sensor co-developed with Sony. Despite being described as 'full frame' the sensor is 53.7 x 40.4mm, making it two and a half times larger than the 135 format to which it's most often applied. The Phase One XF 100MP camera system offers 16-bit color output, a native ISO range of 50-12,800 and a claimed 15 stops of dynamic range. The camera body, back and 80mm Schneider Kreuznach lens (~50mm equiv) will set you back around $49,000.

Sony is bringing its Alpha SLT-A68 DSLR camera - announced in Europe back on November 5th - to the US and Canada this spring. The a68 uses the company's Translucent Mirror Technology, which allows for 8 fps continuous shooting with full-time autofocus. It sports a 24MP CMOS sensor, 79-point AF system (borrowed from the a77 II), a tilting LCD display, and Full HD video recording using the XAVC S codec. Read more

As virtual reality grows in popularity, an increasing number of consumer-grade 360° cameras are hitting the market. Latest among them is Luna, a spherical camera that records 360° footage for viewing on desktop or through a cardboard VR headset. The team behind Luna is seeking funding on Indiegogo to cover design and production costs. Update: The Yi Action Camera is now being sold in the US. Chinese company Xiaomi, perhaps best known for its smartphones, has introduced a new GoPro competitor called the Yi Action Camera. This new action camera will only be sold inside of China for the equivalent of approximately $64 USD (399 CNY); the company doesn't, as of now, have plans to sell it elsewhere. This still poses a problem for GoPro, however, which has recently been looking to expand into the Chinese market. Read more

Digital medium format brand Phase One has bought the whole of the Mamiya Digital Imaging Company and has taken over Mamiya's Saku factory for its Japanese HQ. The Danish company has had a long-standing relationship with the Japanese camera and lens manufacturer, and since 2009 has owned 45% of the company's shares. Read more

Ricoh has announced it is to offer an infrared-sensitive version of its 645Z medium format camera, the 645Z IR. Sadly, the new model is not intended for public consumption, but will be aimed at museums and scientific establishments who will have to sign a usage agreement before they can make a purchase. Ricoh's string of teaser coverage for its upcoming full-frame Pentax DSLR continues today with a new image of the camera and a press release - though not much in the way of more concrete information. Read more

Lytro, maker of the ILLUM light field camera, has announced an update to its Lytro Desktop software. The application used to edit Lytro's 'Living Pictures' in which focus can be selected after capture now allows for exposure, saturation and color edits to specific areas of an image based on depth. In July, Panasonic revealed plans to launch a feature it calls Post Focus for select camera models via a firmware update. Panasonic today announced that firmware update will be available via the Lumix Global website on November 25. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX8, DMC-G7, and DMC-FZ330 will be supported. Read more

German camera manufacturer Leica has added another rangefinder body to its M system that has a pared-down feature set, an extra quiet shutter unit and a lower price than the M Typ 240. The new Leica M Typ 262 is very much the same as the other M bodies, but does not offer video or live view shooting, even though it uses a CMOS sensor. Read more

In a brief press release, Nikon announced the development of its D5 digital SLR, which will be the company's next flagship camera. There aren't any real details in the release, other than the expected promise of better performance and image quality. A new SB-5000 Speedlight and WT-6 Wireless Transmitter are also on the roadmap. Read more

California-based startup LucidVR recently showcased its consumer-level camera for creating virtual reality content, LucidCam. The camera, which is nearing mass production, is one of the first to enable anyone to create VR content, something that has thus far been limited to those with expensive VR camera rigs. Read more

Lytro, a company known for its light field cameras and technologies, has introduced Immerge, a professional-grade cinematic virtual reality rig. According to Lytro, this is the first 'end-to-end' virtual reality hardware and software solution, with the entire system comprising four primary components: a light field camera array, storage and processing server, an editor, and a video player. Sony Europe has announced a new Alpha-mount camera, the a68. High on its list of features is a 79-point phase detect '4D FOCUS' AF module likely borrowed from the a77 II. With a 24MP APS-C sensor and Sony's translucent mirror technology, the camera is capable of 8 fps shooting with AF tracking. Read more

Medium format and aerial camera maker Hasselblad has sold a minority stake to the Chinese drone giant SZ DJI Technology Co Ltd, in what the two companies describe as a 'corporate partnership'. The exact size of the stake has not been revealed, but both sides are keen to point out that there will be no merging of the businesses and from an external viewpoint nothing will change. Read more

C&A Marketing, a Polaroid licensee that makes the Cube action cameras, has sued GoPro over its newly introduced Hero4 Session camera. The new GoPro model is cube-shaped and resembles Polaroid's own Cube and Cube+ action camera models, allegedly infringing upon C&A's design patent. Read more

Leica has introduced the full-frame SL system, including the SL Typ 601 ILC and three compatible SL lenses. The SL uses a 24MP CMOS sensor adapted from the Leica Q, and true to form its weather-sealed body is cut from a single block of milled aluminum. Read more

Sony has announced its Cyber-shot RX1R II, an update to 2013's RX1 and RX1R full-frame, fixed-lens compact cameras. The RX1R II brings a 42.4 Megapixel BSI-CMOS sensor borrowed from the a7R II, 35mm F2 Zeiss Sonnar T* lens, retractable viewfinder, variable low-pass filter and greatly improved autofocus. Read more

Lomography has introduced the Lomo’instant Wide camera. Using Fujifilm Instax Wide film, the camera offers a 35mm equivalent lens and Auto, Bulb, and 1/30sec Fixed Shutter Speed modes. Features cater to those who want to take a little more control over their instant prints, including a multi-exposure button and a lens cap that functions as a shutter remote control. Canon has introduced two new enthusiast compacts with 1"-type CMOS sensors: the PowerShot G5 X, which will sit above the PowerShot G7 X, and the entry-level G9 X which is roughly the size of the PowerShot S120. Read more

The Canon EOS M10 makes its debut with a new collapsible 15-45mm F3.5-6.3 IS kit lens, taking up residence below the more advanced EOS M3 in that company's mirrorless lineup. A replacement for the M2, the M10 offers an 18MP CMOS sensor, 3" 1.04M dot tilting touch screen LCD, built-in Wi-Fi with NFC and 1080/30p video recording. Read more
