Leica T firmware version 1.5 update adds Wi-Fi Direct feature

Leica has released firmware version 1.5 for the Leica T, adding Wi-Fi Direct functionality for transferring images wirelessly. After updating, Leica T owners can set up a mobile hotspot through which images are shuttled between the camera and an iOS mobile device running the Leica T app. In addition, firmware 1.5 speeds up the camera's wireless reconnection with known networks and improves reconnection reliability.

The Leica T for iOS app is available from iTunes. The new firmware version 1.5 update is available through the Leica T website.

Seriously, if this camera was pink with a Hasbro label it might make sense. All those sharp edges look positively ridiculous ... laughable actually. But then, I would never endanger my child with such sharp edges, which to me makes this camera unacceptable for either children or adults. So who is it for ... clowns?

You want a real laugh? If this camera was labeled Sony, Panasonic, Canon, Nikon or Pentax, just the appearance of it would cause uncontrollable laughter by most photographers ... I guarantee it with my life and my soul! Just be honest and admit that I'm right.

Do you have a Leica at all? All real Leica's are good machines. The T is very very good, and with the new firmware update 1.4 and now 1.5 a supermachine. The Q is good too, but the fringing is bad. The M is very good but an anachronism. The T is the only one I can carry in my pocket.I have the 23mm lens and the zoom, but I am waiting now for a pancake 45 or 50mm.

All the reviews of the Q are exceptional (except for the EVF which suffers from a bit of ghosting), lens, as normal with Leica is exeptional. With regard to fringing, I have not seen or heard of this issue.

Pay (save) the extra and get a Leica Q. Of course is more expensive but immensely superior to the T, both in handling, image quality etc. Plus it will hold its resale value more if the customer comes to resell it in future.

The fact that they only offer an iOS app says all about the target user of this camera.

(someone who prefers a foolproof ui and is ready to overpay to compensate his lazyness.)

Not, don't flame me, I honestly don't know anyone who could ever tell me about a real advantage of iOS over Android other than the fact that it "just works".

1) more simple
2) more stable
3) makes it nearly impossible for the end-user to screw things up to the level where nothing works anymore

A bit anti iOS (Apple) users aren't you? Most users just what to take photo's, so something that just happens to 'just work' is what the majority of photographers want and not programming in machine code. Just my 2 cents worth.

Same can be said in reverse about Android (which I am using right now).

Best thing people can usually say about Android is 'you can root it' so you can tweak it. Why anyone would want to buy a mobile device with the sole purpose of fixing it themselves and claiming the fact that they can (have to) do that makes it 'better' is beyond me.

Personally I find them both to be equal parts useful and awful and really wish that other great mobile OSes didn't die out so these two could have their cruddy duopoly.

A majority of graphics designers, professional photographers and the like use Apple devices. So the target market for this camera is appropriate.

Because back in the days (ten years ago) Apple (Mac OS) was basically alone offering good solutions for graphics design, photo editing, etc.

People, especially the lazy kind, have a hard time changing their ways, so they stick with what they have, even if it's not the best bang for the buck anymore.

I get a dust and waterproof Sony smartphone with hardware Apple fans have to wait for another generation and pay only half of what they will then..

Sure, the iPhone will "just work" but I never had any issues with my Android device, no need to root anything, although I do like the customization capabilities it offers and how I stay in control!

From a former iOS user and current Android user: Android overheats easily with normal use, iPhones don't. It's not a experience with one particular device or Android version. Every single Android device I've owned (5 in total, from gingerbread to Lollipop) has this overheating issue. I also had 4 different iPhone models up to Iphone 6 plus. Unless I am doing a lot of intense gaming, iPhone don't overheat at all on normal use (email, call, Waze etc)

If my phone ever overheated (which it never did, but I only had 2 android phones and a blackberry in 8 years; I'm not into gizmos and feature overload anyways), I'd just hold it under water.. Can your iPhone do that too?

And no, I don't have a fingerprint scanner nor do I need one..

@photominion Wow! that is a really cool feature to handle the overheating design flaw inherited to Android: just put it underwater and the problem is solved! Other Android manufactures should have this built in into their devices. And remember, I don't have an iPhone, I am currently using an android device. Despite the overheating issue, I like android better.

I don't personally know anybody with any phone who ever had an overheating problem, neither iPhone nor Android device. I know of macbooks that caused some burns on girls legs but nothing related to phones.

Maybe it depends on what region you're in?!
In my country, we've got 97% LTE coverage..

What has happened to the Leica T"? I see an occasional (quite rare) photograph attributed to the T on the Leica forums, but otherwise it seems to have fallen off the face of the earth. I do not recall ever seeing one in popular tourist places (San Diego, Chicago, Athens, etc.). It's a pity.

They are a long way from debugging this camera. Instead of fixing some bugs, they release more "features" in an effort to catch up with competition and improve marketability. Newsflash, they are light years behind competition... Not that they take notice.. If they fix the bugs, reduce by around 50% the ridiculous and unjustified prices of their lenses and 30-40% of the T body they can hope to compete in the mirrorless (DSLM) market. Until that time, they'll be the stuff of ...laughter (sorry, the "45-minute polished stuff of laughter).

Care to list some of the bugs? And I"ve used this camera.

"unjustified lens prices", um get back to me when some other party can match the 50mm M f2.0 APO. But the 23mm T could be better for colour.

The SL is a very nice camera, and retailers are selling all that Leica can ship, this will be true for the next year.

Leica wasn't the only ones to overprice their cameras. Contax did the same thing with their digital compact cameras before Kyocera which manufactured those, after the design by Contax, decided to withdraw from the camera market.
For the Contax TVS Digital which was available in champagne-color and black they charged $899 respectively a grand, $999 for the black in 2003.
It shall be said though that Contax included a leather-case and a simple IR remote control. The battery charger was a simple AC-charger with contact which you plug into the camera.
The Contax TVSD used a common 5mp 1/1.8" sensor and a pretty much standard, though with near superb performance, 35-105mm f2.8 - 4.8 zoomlens. Most of the camera-body was in Titanium. The Lcd is only 1.6".
I didn't buy a TVSD back then but a used one at a much lower price in 2013, I think it was.
It is a photographers' camera with a very much intuitive UI and good handling overall.

I own contax gear since mid 90's and you need to realize Contax film bodies were not cheap for the time. The TVS was not a huge hit and it was expensive. Of course the digital ver were even more. Funny that everything is gone but I'm still using my contax lenses, both MM and G, on Sony.

I don't know how much the G3 cost new. Anyway it is a more bulky camera. Unlike the TVSD it is not really pocketable.
Yes. I've had a look mostly at Contax T2, T3 and also the film-based TVS compacts. The TVS film compacts had slower widest aperture than T2 and T3 due to the zoom in these but still performed well optically.

Great camera to use? It's like shooting an iPhone. I tested one in the Leica store, and it was like shooting a smart phone. Not what I will call a nice experience.

Leicas has very often been a bit expensive in relation to what they seem to offer and also sometimes sub par specifications for things like the lcd screens etc. Not sure however the T-lcd screen is on par with the competition or not as I not have had much of a look at the T. I'm surprised that the FW update not seems to have brought anything more of use to the camera. But maybe or not it is a update which Leica considered critical and they intend to come up with some bigger update later. I believe they are a little bit like Ricoh and Fujifilm. R and F don't just fix bugs but also add some real useful features that their users are asking for. That's only for their high-end compact cameras or ILCs though.

Robert - I have an M and a A7ii, the T feels like a phone, no comparison to the A7. The A7 might not be the best experience as a camera, but its miles ahead of the T, put a nice lens in front of the a7 like a loxia, and the A7 become a really solid piece of equipment. The T might be compared to that samsung camera with android.

Yes the T looks nice as an engineering gadget, but as a camera, is a horrible piece of hi tech...

I agree with you - the T feels surreal to me, while the M feels exactly like a camera should and so does the SL.

However, I accept that the modern customer may want something else - lots and lots of new users grew up taking photos while looking at the screen at arms length instead of through a viewfinder - perhaps it feels natural to them?
