Phase One adds the IQ3 100MP back to its A-series system

Danish camera manufacturer Phase One has expanded its range of A-Series offerings to include the new 100MP IQ3 digital back. The A-Series kits consist of an Alpa 12TC camera body with one of three lenses and a choice of IQ3 backs in 50-, 60-, 80- and 100-million-pixel resolutions. The A-Series is particularly interesting as the cameras have no mirror, so vibrations are kept to a minimum at the time of exposure.

Images have to be composed on the rear touchscreen using the 30 fps live view feature, though the Wi-Fi functionality of the back allows connection to Apple iPod and iPhone devices via the Capture Pilot app for remote viewing, control and capture. The IQ3 backs also offer USB 3 and HDMI ports for tethered shooting to a computer running the Capture One Pro 9 software application, or for streaming live view content to a TV or field monitor.

Each lens is calibrated with the body in the factory, so there should be no need for users to create custom color correction profiles themselves. The calibrations are stored in the IQ3 back, and users just have to select the matching menu item when changing lenses.

The IQ3 100MP back in the kits is the standard model, and can also be used with the Phase One XF DSLR camera.

The kits come with the Rodenstock ALPAR F4.0 35mm, but an ultra-wide Alpagon 23mm F5.6 and a 'standard' Alpagon 70mm F5.6 are also available. The A-series IQ3 100MP system is available now, and is priced at $56,000 with the 35mm lens. It comes with a 5-year warranty and personalized 24/7 support.

They must be making 90% profit. I can't believe the machinery inside this box costs more than $5K. At this price I wouldn't buy it even if I could comfortably afford it - with world hunger and income inequality such a purchase is vain if not criminal.

You don't know what you're talking about. Sure, the components inside are not worth more than $5k probably, but you see this in every niche product. If you sell in huge volume you can afford something like 5-10% profit per product, but if you're just gonna sell 100 of these? Or 1000? It barely covers the cost for R&D, paying workers decent salaries and all that.
Also, this purchase is being made by people that are making money with it, just like with any tool. It's not vain, i am not seeing medium format cameras hanging from hipster necks like i see DSLRs.
Also, me paying $50k for a camera while children are starving in Africa doesn't mean anything. Money is not a finite resource, and me having $50k doesn't mean someone else doesn't because of me.

Sold on the design. Suppose many might find it retro but I'm sure it's 99% very logically founded on functional requirements, the 1% being the use of brass, surely a conscious allusion to early 1900's? Love the maximized contrast between the industrially-boxy-cylindrical electromechanical and optical parts and the organic-ergonomic unique-grained hand-caressing wooden grip. Looks like it would be bliss just to hold it. Wish some affordable cameras were designed in a similar spirit. Seems to make such perfect sense.

You can attach the back to any of several bodies, not necessarily made by PhaseOne, making this link you're describing rather impractical to implement.

Curious how, with smaller-than-35mm sensors, every focal length is usually quoted with its "35mm equivalent" length alongside, but with larger-than-35mm, this is not the case. No-one has ever said of a Hasselblad 70mm lens, "50,mm equivalent". Nor should they!

So why is this always done for smaller-frame cameras?

It would certainly be nice if all lenses were described by their angle of view, then everyone would be used to those values and focal length and sensor size wouldn't matter.

All DSLR used to be either 35mm film or 120 roll fil cameras. I guess that is where the refence to 35mm full frame sensor come from. The digital cameras are all kind of based on the 35mm model and if the sensor inside is smaller than FF 36x24mm we call them crop cameras and the true focal length is calculated according to the sensor size. Same principle is applied to digital medium format, because they initially originated from the 120 roll film 6x4.5cm cameras such as Mamyia 645 with image frame 56x42.5mm. If the digital sensor is of that size we say it is full frame and the lenses as we know them have true focal lenght. Anything with smaller sensor is crop and hence multiplication factor is applied to work out the true focal lenght of lenses marked for FF MF. So, the 80mm is a standard lens with angle of view, as marked for 80mm lens but that is only true for medium format FF 56x42.5mm sensor. If the sensor is smaller, the 80 mm lens becomes 100mm or whatever.

Because for the vast majority of consumers, 35mm is the largest film format they're familiar with, and as such, they can readily relate to the fields of view achieved by lenses of popular focal lengths for that format.

Also because the vast majority of consumers aren't smug and pedantic.

i remember in the film days lenses were NOT quoted in 35mm equivalents, even for camera systems that used smaller frame sizes. Examples that come to mind include the half frame size Pen F system, the APS size Nikkor IX, and the 110 size Pentax Auto 110.

Not sure why this convention was switched in the digital era.

Exactly, 35mm is full format based on what? If an 8X10 camera is "full format" then 4X5 should be considered a cropped format and so on :)

Usually because 35mm full-frame lenses are frequently mounted to smaller-than-35mm camera bodies. When that happens, it becomes important to explain why the resulting image is not the same between the two bodies. Medium format lenses are not mounted to 35mm or APS-C bodies (that I know of), so there is no need to make this distinction.

Actually, when you download their tech specs PDF, they DID mention the 35mm equivalent.

I also see that many answerers did not read or get your question completely, so here's what I think: 35mm is some kind of a standard so everything is usually measured in 35mm terms for most consumer devices.

However Medium Format is higher quality than standard, and also very rare among normal consumers and meant for professionals. Thats why these manufacturers don't even bother to mention that, I think they expect that you already have the experience to know how to calculate the equivalent focal lengths. Or, that you're not even interested in what your camera would be compared to a lower standard.

Quick answer is that 35mm was the standard DSLR size when digital appeared but those early digital SLRS were all some form of crop sensor so you had to keep talking about a 35mm field of view equivalent to explain how the old lens was going to look.

On this subject, my MAJOR bugbear is the continued use of ancient, meaningless descriptions for most sensor sizes. What the heck IS the size of a 1/1.7" sensor in millimetres?

Surely the time has come to describe ALL sensors in a standard way, indicating their size and aspect ratio concisely. A "35mm full frame" sensor is actually 24*36mm, giving it a 3:2 aspect ratio. Diagonally, it is about 43.25mm. The one thing it isn't, is "35mm", and by definition, ALL cameras are "full frame" for the size of sensor they contain.

So my OM-D E-M1's "4/3" sensor is 17.3*13mm, 21.6mm in diameter, and 4:3 aspect ratio. Why not call it, "21.6(4:3)", and your regular "full frame" camera, "43.2(3:2)". The 1/1.7" (7.6*5.7mm) sensor would be "9.4(4:3)" and so on.

From descriptions like this, anyone can work out the "effective" focal length of any given lens on any given sensor, without having to refer to a look-up table.

But in the film days you could mount "Full frame" F mount lenses on APS sized Nikkor cameras, yet they didn't "convert" the size for you then. So why now? I doubt people have become "too stupid" to multiply now.

Because of the reason I gave above. Initial digital models were the same mount but with some form of crop sensor and they expected you to use the same lenses (they didn't offer new ranges) so suddenly the marketing had to talk about full frame equivalent and its continued from then. When they introduced APS it was mainly for point and shoots and they built new cameras and lenses around it.

Well, in this case it is actually first time in the history of mankind that the sensor inside is actually very very close to full frame. The IQ3 100MP sensor is only negligibly smaller than 56x42.5mm with crop factor less than 1.1 applied to calculate the true focal length.

God you m4/3s users like to project your inferiority complex concerning your chosen sensor size on to others. It is really getting old. FF users don't' care at all a bigger format is available. They also know Full Frame is short for the full 35mm frame and as such refers to a very specific sensor size only and is not and never has been meant to convey superiority. They know it was invented to help film SLR users with the transition to digital by using familiar terms like crop and full frame to explain how their lenses would work with the new DSLRs which were APS-C.

But m4/3s users like you seem all butt hurt because you think FF and crop are meant to convey that one is Superior and one is inferior instead. Like you're constantly afraid your camera is being called inferior so you have to prove it's not. Honestly to most FF users posts like yours make m4/3s users seem like a bunch of children that are afraid their sibling got the better toy and are now throwing a tantrum over it.

We do not call micro 43 sensors "cropped", we call them micro. Crop is reserved for APS-C.

In the days of film (which I still use) no one talked about 'full frame' when referring to any size of film camera. In fact people only really used the term 'frame' when referring to roll film, either 35mm or 120.

Some cameras, however--e.g Olympus Trip--WERE referred to as 'half frame'. They predated 110, and used half of a 35mm frame and so could take 72 images on a roll of 35mm/36 exposures. The cameras took vertical images when the camera was horizontal. So if we take this as the starting point, a 'full frame' would therefore be 35mm.

Larger formats were sheets, not 'frames' because the terminology came originally from the film industry and therefore only applied to roll film, 35mm in particular.

And a sensor can't really be a 'crop' sensor--its size is its size. 'Cropping' is what is done after the image is taken. The only time the term 'cropped sensor' should be used is when you choose to omit some of the pixels available to you, like selecting a different image ratio.

The origin of the term 'cropped sensor' is pretty clear. A sensor used in a camera system (flange distance, lens mount, existing lens catalogue) that is smaller than the sensor/film size the camera system was originally designed for. Using a definition based on this origin means there are only two batches of sensor size that should be called cropped: APS-C/H and cropped MF (usually 33 x 44 mm).

The interesting thing is that there are a lot of people who have a m43 and a FF system. When they profess why they might use one system in one situation and the other in another situation, they get criticised for both choices, just from different people.

I poke fun at the assumption of FF being the ultimate in image quality and you assume I am defending m4/3s? The insecurity is not mine.

Pete, i for one did not see his comment as an insecure one, but i did felt that coming from your original post. Yes, there are a bunch of "FF elitists" if you care for that term, that think full frame is the pinnacle of camera tech, but most of us that love photography know that is not true. Also, sure, a medium or large format camera can capture more detail, but is worse at higher ISO's. Also, they're heavy, big, expensive, strictly a niche product.

Since 35mm focal length equivalents are generally stated, the lenses offered here should also have these stated especially because this is not a well-known (popular) format. Also, I presume there are no shift or T-S movements, which severely diminishes its functionality IMO. Imagine not having the ability to compose with movements, then having to take time in post to make perspective corrections on such huge files.

There is no reason to share the 35mm equivalent because you will never mount these medium format lenses on a 35mm body. The only reason you see 35mm equivalent stated on DSLR lenses is because they can be mounted on smaller sensor bodies and thus need an explanation why the resulting image is different.

I kind of own this. Have the Phase 100mp back, and the Alpa TC body, and the 70mm Alpa-Rodenstock lens (among others). Not got the baked in LCC correction though, sadly. wonder if there's a way to do it myself?

Not exactly the same back but apart from the nice size of the cam I REALLY adore the way how to cam acts like a pro-tool. No cheesy gimmicks or 4k whatever modes, but Zone System. Adjustable Clipping params, working on RAW instead of preview-jpgs. And the sensortemperature is more important than a selfy-Tiltscreen. This is for the ones who deserve it ;)

An exquisite thing for sure, but way beyond my means. I'm not sure I would have the shot discipline for the increase in resolution over the 645Z either.

It seems like the utility has been removed from a system like this by not having tilt and shift with a bellows. I could do the same thing this system does by using an old Hasselblad (or Rollei, or Fuji GX, or Mamiya....) body and putting a digital back on it. Or I could get tilt and shift by putting a digital back on a 4x5 and get the same Rodenstock lens or any number of other great LF lenses by Nikon, Fuji, Rodenstock, Schneider, Cooke...

My though exactly. It is likely intended for a landscape photography with large prints as the endproduct in mind. But the cost is huge for such a niche use.

There are models that can shift: http://www.alpa.ch/en/article/alpa-12-max but it is not part of the a-series. The a-series is essentially an Alpa 12 TC with back, lens, software and calibration included.

My D750 costs even less and for price/performance it can't be beat. But it doesn't have medium format lenses, 100 megapixel full format medium format, and so on. It's like comparing a Rolls Royce to a Mondeo.

I think BobYIL was referring to the possibility to stitch shifted some images with TS lenses... and for some controllable scenarios that can be comparable maybe we can admit.
(Btw for this purpose D750 won't work w/ the nice Canon ts-e lineup - but Sony maybe).

Obviously if you photograph something else (like anything moving) then you can start comparing RR to Ford of course, as you said.

Probably. But does this exact model have shift movement for panoramas w/o parallax error? (That was the reason for mentioning the tilt-shift lenses at all.)
I think none of the above 3 available lenses have this feature.

But anyway, these are different products for different purposes, so they can be compared only to a certain extent.

Sensor-wise: yes, there IS a difference (although it has its price :) )

The chromatic and spherical aberration gets so bad with digital backs when you shift and tilt that phaseone provided a filter with the alpa system.
The filterless and filtered images were stacked together and the software got rid of the imperfections.
Same with the Hasselblad adapter of course.
Ridiculous but that's just how physics works.

My friend who is an architecture photographer shoots every image with his Linhof Technika.
And yes. There are clients who appreciate this kind of result and are willing to pay for it.
If one does the math for 35mm, Velvia 50 has a resolution of 160 lp/mm.
No Bayer Interpolation Data.
In a perfect world, one would need a 174MP back to match this (technical) resolution.

...and yes, i'm always schitting my pants whenever he shows me the drumscanned images from the Heidelberg Chromagraph.
