Gerson began his career as a staff writer on the NBC show Something So Right before transitioning to writing animated features for Pixar. Gerson is best known for co-writing Monsters, Inc., Monsters University, and Big Hero 6. 'Kung Fu Panda 3' Tops Super Bowl Weekend; 'Hail, Caesar!' Leads Newcomers

7 February 2016 9:00 AM, PST | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Kung Fu Panda 3 topped Super Bowl weekend, finishing #1 for a second weekend in a row while the weekend's three newcomers didn't exactly inspire upon release. The Coens' Hail, Caesar! performed as expected, though that isn't saying much, while The Choice ended up topping Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which couldn't even reach $6 million. Meanwhile, the big winner of the weekend is Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which crossed $900 million domestically and became only the third film to ever make over $2 billion worldwide. With an estimated $21 million, Kung Fu Panda 3 took home the #1 position for a second weekend in a row. The 49% drop is a bit steeper than expected, but could also have to do with some hesitation with predicting too high a Sunday gross. Nevertheless, with no serious competition arriving until Zootopia on March 4, this one still has a lot of time to rake in a few dollars. »

The current wave of downsizing at 21st Century Fox may not be the last. Speaking to investors Monday following the release of the company’s second-quarter 2016 earnings, CEO James Murdoch indicated that the company has designs on cutting payroll beyond buyout program the company initiated last week in its film and TV businesses. “One number that has been out there is really $250 million of savings around this particular program, but these are programs that are going to be ongoing,” Murdoch said. “And they run across all the businesses.” Also Read: 'Gotham' Releases First Look at Bd Wong as Hugo Strange (Photo) Last. »

Oscar dilemma: Why am I still predicting 'The Big Short' for Best Picture even after DGA and SAG?

14 minutes ago | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

"Spotlight" won the SAG Award for Best Ensemble, and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu just won the DGA Award for "The Revenant." So why am I still predicting "The Big Short" for Best Picture at the Oscars? I'm starting to wonder if I'm on the wrong track, but I'm not wavering -- yet. -Break- I should start by saying that I tied with just one other person for the high score predicting last year's Oscars with 23 out of 24 categories correct (damn you, "Big Hero 6"!). That's worth noting because my bragging rights will quickly and mercilessly expire once this year's winners are announced, so I should get it in while I can. Subscribe to Gold Derby Breaking News Alerts & Experts’ Latest Oscar Predictions Part of what I think contributed to my high score last year was that, after making major wrong calls for two years running, I decided to keep idle speculation to a minimum. »

Albert Zugsmith’s 1960 film about a motley band of misfits transported back to the Garden of Eden plays like a sexploitation farce written by Rod Serling. The movie never lives up to the salacious possibilities of its title but with its wacky casting coups (including Mickey Rooney as the devil and Mamie Van Doren as Eve!), who can complain? Boasting a B-movie dream cast including Tuesday Weld and Mel Torme, it was written by Robert Hill, the scribe behind Zugsmith’s similarly gonzo "Confessions of an Opium Eater." »

If 'the people' voted on Oscar nominations, would they be more diverse?

1 hour ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

In an alternate universe where average (but prestige-conscious) moviegoers decided the Oscar nominations, who'd come out on top? We tried to answer this question by looking at the biggest box office earners of 2015 and picking which movies gave us the most beloved performances. We realized two things: 1) this list looks a lot like what we expect from the upcoming MTV Movie Award nominations; 2) it'd be a bit more diverse than the real Oscars. So here are our guesses for the audience-chosen Oscar nominees in the categories of Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Picture.    »

Why 'Mad Max: Fury Road' does not deserve the Best Picture Oscar

1 hour ago | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

Under the headline “Why 'Fury Road' deserves the Best Picture Oscar,” Entertainment Weekly writer James Hibberd attempts to counter the arguments against George Miller’s “Mad Max” reboot deserving the Best Picture Oscar: that it has no plot; it is wall-to-wall action without three-dimensional characters; and it is not serious or important. -Break- Subscribe to Gold Derby Breaking News Alerts & Experts’ Latest Oscar Predictions To that last criticism, Hibberd writes “What is Serious and Important anyway? And is 'Fury Road' any less serious and important than Best Picture winners like 'Lord of the Rings: Return of the King,' 'The Departed,' or 'Silence of the Lambs'?” Mentioning those three Oscar winners is not an argument; it’s a subjective judgment. Hibberd is saying he doesn’t believe that one of the greatest adaptations of a literary classic o »

Joel and Ethan Coen on how they turned Hollywood history into the hysterical 'Hail, Caesar!'

1 hour ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

I still get nervous about certain interviews. It's human. I love movies dearly, and have since I was young, and when I talk to filmmakers who I respect enormously, I tend to either talk waaaaaaay too fast or just overcomplicate my questions. Once things start, though, a good conversation is a good conversation, and I relax into things. That's particularly easy when you're talking to someone who give back as good as they get, and that's the Coen Brothers in spades. Three quick points before we dig in. First, enjoy Backstory, a new video series we're doing here at HitFix in which I pull back the curtain a bit on the stories that went unreported or untold over the last 25 years while I've been working here in La. While I spoke to the Coens about To The White Sea during our interview, we didn't get into the impact that the film's implosion had on them, »

Jimmy Kimmel’s ‘Who Knows’ to Become a Game Show, Meaning Your Useless Celebrity Knowledge Is Now Slightly Less Useless

With the smashing success of Spike's Lip Sync Battle, other networks are raiding the closets of the late-night Jimmys in search of more gamified celebrity whimsy to spin into ratings gold: Variety reports that ABC has ordered up a series version of Jimmy Kimmel's "Who Knows," a game-show segment that tests whether stars can press a buzzer faster than their most knowledgeable fans. It'll be called Big Fan, and the new name brings a slew of other changes: Andy Richter will take over hosting duties, and the famous person will now be competing to answer questions about themselves with not one but three of their fans. That's three times as many chances to monetize your knowledge of the name of Taylor Swift's high-school Bff. (Abigail, duh.) »

21st Century Fox Earnings: Cable Gains Can’t Lift Weaker Film Results

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Updated: Lackluster home entertainment results, a weaker film slate and difficult foreign exchange rates pushed revenues and profits at 21st Century Fox down during the media conglomerate’s most recent fiscal quarter.

Revenues hit $7.38 billion, a decrease of 1% from the prior year, missing analysts expectations. Earnings per share topped off at 44 cents compared to 53 cents per share in the year-ago period, which was roughly in line with projections.

Wall Street was expecting earnings of 44 cents a share and $7.51 billion in revenue. It was a quarter that saw the return of Fox’s television hit “Empire,” the release of Ridley Scott’s space epic “The Martian” and several tussles between Fox News and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. There’s also been some preemptive belt-tightening. Last week, word leaked that the media conglomerate is initiating a voluntary buyout program as it looks to reduce staff overhead by $250 million in the coming fiscal year. »

Deadpool is totally a feminist, according to Deadpool writer Gerry Duggan
