An Atlanta man was arrested over the weekend after his 6-year-old daughter found his gun in the cushions of a couch and accidentally shot herself to death.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Ja’MeccaSmith was found dead at the home of Demarqo Smith early Saturday morning. The 25-year-old father was not home when the police arrived. He briefly fled the scene before returning to speak to the police.
Smith was arrested the next day and charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct. He is currently being held at the Fulton County jail without bond. Two adults and four other children, including Ja’Mecca’s twin brother, were at the home when the incident took place.
Speaking with WXIA-TV, Ja’Mecca’s mother, Kate Milling, mourned the loss of her daughter at a candlelight vigil held on Sunday.

“Right now my life’s in shambles,” said Kate Milling, Jamecca’s mother. “It hurts; it’s not a good feeling. I lost my baby girl, and life’s hard for me right now. My family is taking this hard.”
“She was my baby girl. She was a sponge; she sucked up everything. One minute she’s six, one minute she’s sixteen, and one minute she’s 60. She’s everybody. That’s my sponge.”
The family has created a GoFundMe in hopes of covering funeral expenses. The first-grade honor student was described by her family as an angel who loved the Disney film Frozen and enjoyed playing with her siblings.
