'Kung Fu Panda 3' Tops Super Bowl Weekend; 'Hail, Caesar!' Leads Newcomers

3 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Kung Fu Panda 3 topped Super Bowl weekend, finishing #1 for a second weekend in a row while the weekend's three newcomers didn't exactly inspire upon release. The Coens' Hail, Caesar! performed as expected, though that isn't saying much, while The Choice ended up topping Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which couldn't even reach $6 million. Meanwhile, the big winner of the weekend is Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which crossed $900 million domestically and became only the third film to ever make over $2 billion worldwide. With an estimated $21 million, Kung Fu Panda 3 took home the #1 position for a second weekend in a row. The 49% drop is a bit steeper than expected, but could also have to do with some hesitation with predicting too high a Sunday gross. Nevertheless, with no serious competition arriving until Zootopia on March 4, this one still has a lot of time to rake in a few dollars. »

'Star Wars: Force Awakens' First Ever to Cross $900 Million Domestically

6 February 2016 4:09 AM, PST | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

With an estimated $1.76 million yesterday, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has become the only film to cross $900 million domestically and it has achieved that milestone in only fifty days. In addition to this watershed moment, by the end of today, Saturday, February 6, Star Wars is expected to become only the third film in history to cross the $2 billion mark worldwide and it will have done so in only 53 days. Considering how quickly Force Awakens has achieved these accomplishments, putting them into any kind of comparable context is nearly impossible. It took Star Wars only 20 days to beat the previous all-time domestic record of $760.5 million held by Avatar. It took Avatar not only 318 days to achieve that number, but two separate releases. As for the worldwide number, Star Wars and Avatar are the only two films to actually cross $2 billion worldwide upon their initial release while it took Titanic two separate releases to cross $2 billion. »

The only category in which it was beaten was Animated Effects in an Animated Production, which went to its fellow Pixar film “The Good Dinosaur.” The 10 Annies tied the record shared by a number of films, including Pixar’s “The Incredibles” and DreamWorks Animation’s “How to Train Your Dragon” and “Kung. »

How Star Wars Cost The Hunger Games Millions Of Dollars, According To The Studio

6 February 2016 9:52 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

There’s no business quite like showbusiness. Hollywood is a fickle town, and despite investing millions of dollars in a popular product; sometimes things don’t work out the way a studio plans them to. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 hit theaters this November and performed far below the expectations of Lionsgate. They seem to have a theory as to why the film underperformed, and it has to do with a combination of current, tragic events, and a galaxy far, far away.   As reported by Deadline, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-chairman Rob Friedman recently spoke out regarding the somewhat underwhelming performance of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2. In the report he explains that the film underperformed by $100 million primarily due to the tragic terrorist attacks in Paris in November, as well as the December release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. There’s some degree of »

Box Office: 'Kung Fu Panda 3' Takes Top Spot Again; 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Hits $900 Million Domestic

18 minutes ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

This weekend, a new movie from the Coen Brothers, another Nicholas Sparks adaptation, and a high concept zombie movie all arrived but none of them could knock out an animated panda from the top spot at the box office. "Kung Fu Panda 3" stayed at the top of the box office for the second straight week, with 20th Century Fox's sequel adding $21 million to the balance sheet, keeping it ahead of the competition which didn't have much of a fighting chance. The film coming in with arguably the biggest push behind it was the Coens' "Hail, Caesar!" and yet, despite a huge ensemble of A-list talent, the picture only earned $11.4 million. The directors have only had six films in their career open in wide release, but this ranks near the bottom with 2003's "Intolerable Cruelty" besting it. With a $22 million pricetag, the film will likely wind up perhaps turning a small profit, »

Alejandro González Iñárritu Wins Top DGA Award; Full List Of Winners

22 minutes ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Well, that’s two DGA wins in two years for Alejandro González Iñárritu, and the Oscar plot thickens. A couple of weeks ago, the Academy Awards race seemed somewhat preordained. “The Big Short” had won the Producers Guild Award (the winner goes on to win Best Picture 69.2% of the time), the SAG awards had pretty much tipped who was going to win in the Oscar acting races, and it all seemed to be fairly locked in for the top categories. And while the odds still favor “The Big Short,” last night's DGAs point to the race still being open and furthermore, shaping up to be another year where the wealth is shared and top prizes are not dominated by one picture. 'Deadpool' Review & Roundup: Ryan Reynolds Finds a Franchise Worthy of His Talents

50 minutes ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

With R-rated Marvel comic movie "Deadpool," Ryan Reynolds has finally found the Hollywood role that has thus far eluded him. He was raw and real in the well-reviewed solo drama "Buried." And you can see glimpses of his comic talent opposite Sandra Bullock in the hit romantic comedy "The Proposal," Jeff Daniels in "Paper Man," and Ben Mendelsohn in last year's "Mississippi Grind."  After several attempts at scaling a comic book movie in Marvel's' "Blade: Trinity" and "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and DC's horrific "Green Lantern," Reynolds has landed a winner at last. With a raucous witty script by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick ("Zombieland"), Reynolds comes into his own as strange and sarcastic post-military mercenary Wade Wilson, who meets and falls in love with his match ("Homeland" star Morena Baccarin) before joining up with the wrong group of »

Film Review: ‘Carnage Park’

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

In “Carnage Park,” the surviving perpetrator and the kidnapping victim of a botched bank robbery become the prey of a crazed Vietnam vet who has a built a giant prison out of an uninhabited expanse of California desert. Viewers may relate to the feeling of being trapped during this strained and tedious throwback, which the writer-director Mickey Keating has framed as a hat tip to the 1970s work of Sam Peckinpah and Peter Watkins, but which lands well south of John Waters in its try-anything-for-a-reaction pretensions. Box office-wise, the movie has the potential to lure only the least suspecting of viewers.

So committed is the film to its vintage aesthetic that it includes a Roman-numeral copyright for 1978, the year in which the story is set. The plot recounts what the opening titles call “perhaps the most bizarre episode in the annals of American crime.” As if the crazy credits and »

Weekend Box Office: Kung Fu Panda Tops Coens, Zombies and Nicholas Sparks

1 hour ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Coen brothers, Nicholas Sparks and zombies couldn't stand up to the Dragon Warrior and his panda compatriots this weekend as Kung Fu Panda 3 held the top spot for a second weekend in a row. The third Kung Fu Panda entry in the franchise added $21 million to its now $69 million total. The two previous panda movies were already near or past $100 million by this same point in release, leaving the third lagging well behind. But by this point in the franchise's life the movie could completely tank but still turn a profit for Dreamworks thanks to the massively successful merchandising machine. The latest offering from the Coens, Hail, Caesar! got a lukewarm reception. With a second place $11 million start it's the lowest ever wide release opening for the brothers and that despite the presence of several big names on the marquee. It wasn't the only box office disappointment. The Choice »

Arthouse Audit: 'The Club' and 'Rams' Reveal Weakness in Subtitled Film Market

2 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

The Oscar-targeted releases "Son of Saul" and "Mustang" have both struggled, despite awards traction and strong reviews. This reinforces the steep decline in recent audiences for art-house subtitled films. This weekend, two strong well-anticipated new entries, "Rams" and "The Club," opened on dates chosen in hopes that they'd be Oscar nominees. But neither made the short list on nine, much less the final five. But their reviews and theater placement should have sparked interest in any case. Instead, both opened with depressing, low results. Only two 2015 niche subtitled films (as opposed to broader appeal, mainly Asian, more commercial releases) managed to gross more than $2 million: "Wild Tales" and "Phoenix" both surpassed $3 million. The Indian "The Lunchbox" managed over $4 million two years ago, while as recently as 2012, Weinstein Co.'s French "Intouchables" passed $10 million and Sony Pictures »

Watch Zoolander and Hansel Hilariously Crash Weekend Update

Saturday Night Live delivered an exemplary episode of television last night, offering host Larry David a chance to flex his comedic chops and riff to his heart’s content. However, one of the bets bits of the night didn’t even involve the host; it took place during Weekend Update and featured some very special, really, really, really ridiculously good looking guests. Derek Zoolander and Hansel appeared not only to promote their upcoming movie Zoolander 2, but also to tear apart the fashion sense of contemporary politicians. Check out the sketch below. Under the false pretense that they have arrived on the show to talk about Fashion Week, the pair of male models immediately delve into a roast of America’s top politicians. Derek makes the bold comparison that Hillary Clinton dresses like Kim Jong Un, while also pointing out that Bernie Sanders dresses like he buys his »

Inside the Directors Guild Awards

2 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Every award show has a purpose: advancing the contenders toward their ultimate goal— Oscar wins. Thus the prolonged DGA Awards Saturday night advanced the cause of all five film director contenders, who were each presented their "medallion" with a lengthy introduction—a carefully calibrated pitch for their movie—and had the chance to accept, adding more fuel to the fire. Oscar nominees Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, Matt Damon and Rachel McAdams were among the presenters trying to add the right touch of gravitas to their Best Picture contenders. The DGA feature winner for the second year running (the first in the guild's 80-year-history), a teary-eyed Alejandro G. Iñárritu, reminded the 1600 guests at the Hyatt Regency ballroom that he was making many Mexicans happy. In other words, he's an all-too rare Oscar candidate representing diversity. Could that tip the balance toward the spectacular "The Revenant," whose Oscar frontrunners Leonardo DiCaprio and. »
