BTW, I thought the Photographic products of Canon only use dry (paper) capacitor.

Paper capacitors have become obsolete since the 1960s. They were largely replaced by metallized polyester and high-capacity ceramic capacitors.

The term "paper capacitor" is generic for "dry capacitor", as you can see from my above response. Agin. let's put this to rest.

I am confused myself as to what a research methodologist is. Even the the text editor here highlights it in red.
Anyways, the methodology is BS of course it is designed to make all the other products look useless but does not give me confidence as to the real strength of the thing in real world situation that are subject to Murphy's law.

Research Methodologist is a real job, but it generally is in a university context as a Thesis supervisor/Mentor. By the sounds of your position, ecube, a research methodologists was exactly what you were. You were employed to thoroughly research testing methods and develop a standard that can be consistently applied. An alternative title would be "Principal Investigator".

The best test would have been to remove the other variables and unscrew the glass from the filter ring!

Blah. eit is right. Any scientific researchers would concern themselves on testing the effect of particular thing and diminish other possible cause of effect as low as possible, which this test has done perfectly right. Make yourself in the 'real world' test would not tell you anything

If one's concern about real world scenario, I'd be looking for that kind of test from Kai the bogeh boy instead. And that 'd be fun

In the kind of impact where significant transfer of energy is involved, something is going to break no matter what. This is an exaggerated example designed to show these new Sigma filters are less likely to crack when you accidentally knock the filter against a door knob or WHY. That's a good thing for those who use protective filters everywhere.

Personally, however, I'm reluctant to use protective filters unless I am in an environment where sand or dust would otherwise re-grind the front element. So I'd be more interested to see how these filters resist scratches in a dust storm, than whether they survive being pelted by ball bearings.

The only exception is the filter I have on my X100S, which acts more like a transparent lens cap, because the lens cap proper long since fell off.

Leandros, you might be missing the point (or you're replying to someone else), which was whether the filter not breaking would damage the front element (it won't).

In other words, any damage to the lens from a fall will be basically the same, with or without the filter.

Obviously no-one's saying that a damaged front element is the only bad thing that can happen from a fall.

Seriously, should we consider that the main purpose of such a filter is to protect the front element against scratches and facilitate cleaning?
As far as I'm concerned, I thing that filter makers should focus more on ghost busting... I've seen ghosts even with relatively expensive coated filters.
