Problem With MS Outlook 2007

Hi Everyone,

I am having trouble with MS Outlook and Internet Explorer 8 on my Windows XP, SP3, computer. When I try to send or receive an email, with no other programs running, it fails I get a screen message which states that the outlook.pst file cannot be accessed because another program is using it.

Outlook and Outlook Express are ticked as permitted in my Windows Firewall settings.

Sorry to be a nuisance but I have been trying to solve this problem for two weeks now and not made any progress. I am using Googlechrome in the meantime but Outlook does not seem to work with Googlechrome and I want to use the features in Outlook.

I would be very grateful if someone could advise me as to how to make Outlook work properly again.

Best Wishes,

John

Task manager and shutdown all instances of outlooK that are running.  Restart outlook..

Re: Do a Ctrl alt del

Hi digitalshooter,

Thank you for your suggestion.

I had previously looked for that but none were showing and still aren't.

Which other programs would possibly use the outlook.pst file?

Best Wishes,
John

None that I know of. Have you rebooted?

Have you scanned for malware or virus?

Re: repair the pst file

Hi,

I tried switching off the search facility in Outlook, following which I could not open Outlook at all.

I have used the scanpst repair tool and the more extensive Office repair tool available from Add/Remove programs, which did permit me to open Outlook again, both without success in achieving the download of my emails.

The Outlook program still says that Outlook.pst file is in use by another program and cannot be accessed.

I swiotched off search indexing in the task manager processes running list but that did not work either.

If I do a new install of Outlook, will I lose any of my emails?

Best Wishes,

John

Re: repair the pst file

do a search for *.pst that is where your mail is.  If you have any mail it could be large in size.

copy it to a thumb drive.

Try to open outlook in safe mode, hold down the ctrl key and click on outlook to start it, what happens?

Also you can try starting your PC in safe mode, do you know how?  If yes once it starts try outlook?

Or for I think 30.00 bucks you can call Microsoft.

Whatever you do, make sure you backup that PST file first.

Re: Problem With MS Outlook 2007

Tools > Options > Mail setup tab > UNCHECK "Use Microsoft Office Word 2003 to edit email messages"

When you get the error, in the top blue bar what does it say?  That indicates the program causing the issue from what I read.

Re: repair the pst file

Hi Digitalshooter,

Thank you for your time and guidance. It is much appreciated.

Outlook would not open when depressing the Ctrl key and clicking on Outlook for the original reason, i.e. the file was in use by another program.

I ran the windows search facility and found that I had two Outlook.pst files, one of which was an old backup file in a different folder on the C Drive and which my previous Scanpst repair efforts seem to have been directed at. I normally backup to a separate drive but for some unknown reason the old backup file had been saved on C.

So, I ran the Scanpst repair file on the correct Outlook.pst file, which effected a repair. I re-booted and opened Outlook, which worked correctly.

It seems that my operating Outlook.pst file had developed some fault and had not been repaired by my previous efforts because those efforts had been directed at an old backup file instead of the operating file.  I shall delete the old backup file.

Thanks to all who tried to help, especially Digitalshooter who guided me in the right direction.

John
