Did 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Cost 'Mockingjay Part 2' $50-$100M?

6 February 2016 2:28 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

If you're going to blame someone, blame the terrorists. And if that doesn't work, blame Star Wars. That's Lionsgate's position this weekend as it tries to explain why franchise closer The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 underperformed to expectations at the box office. During a conference call this past Saturday morning, Lionsgate execs agreed that Mockingjay Part 2 did underperform by at least $100M. But they also claim that their TV division helped make up for the loss.

The conference call kicked off with Lionsgate executives announcing that they are increasing their 2017 release slate. Next year, they will bump up their output to four additional movies, from 13 to 17 feature films that will get a wide release. They also confirmed that they are aiming for overall lower film costs. The studio plans to focus on 'discipline production spends and a diverse portfolio'. While this was seen as good news by most, »

DVD Review – Irrational Man (2015)

1 February 2016 1:30 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Irrational Man, 2015.

Directed by Woody Allen.

Starring Emma Stone, Joaquin Phoenix, Jamie Blackley, and Parker Posey.

Synopsis:

A philosophy professor, in the midst of an existential and a moral crisis, commits an irrevocable act of murder.

Nihilistic philosophy professor Abe (Joaquin Phoenix), a newly recruited member of the fictional college campus Braylin, is immediately sought after by fellow colleague Rita (Parker Posey) and one of his students Jill (Emma Stone). The first act is entrenched in a tonally jarring malaise; any semblance of believable character agency exerted by either of the two female leads is lost. Jill’s voice over describes Abe as a tormented genius, and an irresistible allure that she, both in this manner and toward her friends, family, and boyfriend Roy (James Blackley), cannot stop talking about him. Rita’s opening gambit to notify Abe of the campus’ gossip in the “who’s fucking who” category is brash, »

Irrational Man DVD Review

Director: Woody Allen

Starring: Joaquin PhoenixEmma StoneParker Posey

Special Features: “On The Red Carpet” Feature and Photo Gallery

Certificate: 12

Boasting the same understated, dialogue-driven style that’s long been his trademark, the most recent addition to Woody Allen‘s enviable body of work – Irrational Man – is one that proves quite difficult to quantify. Taking inspiration from some of his previous successes, Allen mixes romance, mystery and comedy elements into this latest offering, making for a quirky, unusual drama.

When philosophy professor Abe Lucas (Joaquin Phoenix) arrives at his new Rhode Island campus, it’s fair to say his reputation precedes him. Famed as an original thinker with alcoholic tendencies and a penchant for womanising, his arrival is the talk of the town, not least in the home of Jill (Emma Stone), a bright student enrolled in his class.

It transpires however that Abe has become disillusioned with »

From Terminator films and Jurassic World through to trailers with the ending in them...

One of the trailers for Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice is the latest to ignite grumbles about just how much is given away in promos for movies.

This list looks at 25 films where the trailer has given away more than it really should in its promos - and it goes without saying that spoilers lie ahead for each of the movies. Don't read or click on individual entries of films you've not seen if you don't want to be spoiler sullied!

25. Jurassic World

Director Colin Trevorrow was amongst those who expressed disappointment at this one particular promo for Jurassic World. In it, we see Chris Pratt riding on his motorbike, alongside velcoraptors that surprisingly don't appear to be eating him. Presented out of context, the scene just looked a little daft. But »

Outrage Watch: Joseph Fiennes is playing Michael Jackson in a movie, naturally

26 January 2016 5:38 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Welcome to Outrage Watch, HitFix's semi-regular rundown of entertainment-related kerfuffles. Not anxious enough already? Get your fix of righteous indignation below, and stay posted for outrage updates throughout the week. Joseph Fiennes is playing Michael Jackson in a movie. I repeat: Joseph Fiennes is playing Michael Jackson in a movie. Joseph Fiennes, in case you'd forgotten, is the white British actor who rose to fame playing William Shakespeare in the Oscar-winning film Shakespeare in Love opposite Gwyneth Paltrow. Michael Jackson, meanwhile, is the black American entertainer who became the most famous pop-music performer of his time before a round of plastic surgeries rendered him unrecognizable and allegations of child molestation derailed his career. The new film, which is being produced for British TV, will be an imagining of an alleged (and subsequently refuted) road trip Jackson took with his friends Elizabeth Taylor (to be played by Stockard Channing in the »

55 years ago today, Cruella de Vil made her big-screen debut

25 January 2016 8:00 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

55 years ago today, audiences got to meet Pongo, Perdita, Patch, and 98 more spotted puppies when “101 Dalmatians” opened in theaters. The film is often credited with saving Disney Animation — 1959’s “Sleeping Beauty” under-performed at the box office, leading to massive layoffs. Roy O. Disney, Walt’s brother, even tried to convince Walt to shut down their animation department and shift focus to TV production. Fortunately for Baloo, Ariel, Simba, Elsa and all the animated Disney greats that were yet to come, “101 Dalmatians” was a box office hit — it was the 10th highest grossing film of 1961 in the U.S. and Canada. And the characters of “101 Dalmatians” have made their mark on pop culture in the 55 years since. Cruella de Vil, the movie’s villain who wants to turn the puppies into a dog-skin fur coat, ranked at #39 on AFI’s list of the top 50 movie villains of all time. Glenn Close »

10 Overlooked Positives Of The Amazing Spider-Man Films

23 January 2016 10:48 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Sony

You’ve got to feel a bit sorry for Marc Webb, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. The previous Spider-Man franchise had three movies in which to prove itself, but these guys were quietly shuffled off the Sony back-lot after just two.

We’ll never get to see The Amazing Spider-Man franchise reach it’s full potential. It’s been kicked conclusively under the carpet in favour of a new collaboration between Sony and Marvel Studios, with Jon Watts and Tom Holland stepping in to take the reins while Webb and co. have had to make themselves scarce.

The sad bit is: their films really weren’t that bad. The big problems (rehashing Raimi and spending too long teasing the Sinister Six) surely came from Sony, while the cast and crew made the most of the material they were given. While they’re not quite ‘Amazing’ as the series’ hubristic moniker would have us believe, »

Oscar So White: This Is Bigger Than Will Smith

The Academy's out of order! The Smiths are out of order! The whole system's out of order! Not to get too deep in paraphrasing Al Pacino's 1979 drama …and justice for all. as we try to make sense of this year's #oscarssowhite controversy, but the point stands: It really is the system that's out of order. (We'll get to the Smiths.) It's easy to blame the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for this year's lack of diversity in Oscar acting nominations. (And last year's.) After all, it's their show. Their 3,000 some-odd members are notoriously older, white and male. They »

Hollywood is all about mixing business with pleasure, and the proof is in this slideshow. Real-life couples Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, and Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have all portrayed onscreen duos. They're far from the only ones - plenty of costars who've played lovers haven't had to act much in certain films, because they were playing opposite their significant other (or future significant other) at the time. Here are 28 acting pairs who played a couple on screen and had a real-life relationship. Even if they broke up later, love was in the air during filming! »

Live action fairytale movies: UK release date calendar

When to expect all the upcoming live action fairytale movies, including Dumbo, Beauty And The Beast and two Jungle Books…

You’ve probably noticed the influx of live action fairytales gracing cinemas in recent years. This isn’t about to stop any time soon, since re-spinning a recognisable fantastical yarn with real people instead of animated ones always makes big money for the studio behind it.

This process has become so popular that there are currently more of these live action fairytales in production than Marvel Studios, DC Entertainment or Star Wars movies. That’s a lot of films. (A whopping 21 by our count.)

Although it wadsn’t the first movie of this kind, Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland – and its worldwide gross of over a billion dollars – can surely take the credit for kick-starting this trend. Here are all the in-development movies trying to repeat its success, »

Top 10 Disappointing Films Of 2015

18 January 2016 2:26 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

2015 offered some terrific films for audiences – The Martian, Creed, Straight Outta Compton, Brooklyn and Star Wars: The Force Awakens to name a few. They were huge crowd-pleasers and very successful at the box office. But not every movie connected with audiences this past year, as much as we wanted them to.

Wamg takes a look at the past 12 months and the movies that we really wanted to love, but just couldn’t. Here we go with our Top 10 list of the Most Disappointing Films of 2015.

Dishonorable Mention: Seventh Son

It’s hard to decipher exactly what Jeff Bridges is saying under his accent that sounds like a cross between Gandalf and Bane from The Dark Knight Rises. And that is only one of the many problems with this film. Seventh Son is nothing but hallow, visual clutter that is cobbled together to form something that struggles to appeal to the »

The snubs and surprises of 2016's batch of Oscar nominees

14 January 2016 7:26 AM, PST | Cineplex | See recent Cineplex news »

Ever since he drowned in the North AtlanticLeonardo DiCaprio’s road to Oscar gold is one fraught with troubles. Not even becoming Martin Scorsese’s Bff got him any closer to the podium. Nope. Leo has never held an Academy Award at the actual ceremony unless it was Kate Winslet’s — but maybe this year will be different.

Leo had the foresight to work with Alejandro González Iñárritu on Oscar Attempt #3,876 – The Revenant. Iñárritu won the big prizes from the Academy last year, going home with both Best Director and Best Picture forBirdman, starring Michael KeatonEmma Stone, and Edward Norton.

This passed Sunday, Iñárritu’s The Revenant won Best Picture at the Golden Globes, with Leonardo taking Best Actor for his bison-liver-eating troubles. Will their winning formula translate into Oscar gold? Their nominations this morning gets them one step closer, but we’ll have to see how it »
