Walt Fredrickson jokes that back when his parents owned a two-pump gas station at U.S. 1 and Malabar Road, traffic was often so sparse "we were sometimes tempted to throw nails in the road to get someone to stop."

The 77-year-old's memories of those days, funny and poignant, are still as crystal-clear as the Indian River waters of Fredrickson's childhood.
