Wire actor West marries long-term Irish partner

Dominic West has married his long-term partner Catherine Fitzgerald in Limerick.

The British actor – who is best known for his role as detective Jimmy McNulty in hit US drama ‘The Wire’ – tied the knot with Fitzgerald at the Church of the Immaculate Conception before a reception at her father’s Glin Castle in Co Limerick yesterday.

Catherine – whose father Desmond Fitzgerald, the 29th Knight of Glin – arrived at the ceremony in a horse-drawn carriage wearing a cream dress designed by her friend Siana Yewdall and was delighted her big day had finally arrived after a three-year engagement.

She said: “I feel so excited, really happy, really thrilled. It’s a fairytale.”

The couple – who dated for three years when they were studying at Trinity College, Dublin in the early nineties and then reconciled in 2002 – were joined at the ceremony by several of the 40-year-old actor’s co-stars, including Sonja Sohn, Wendell Pierce, Doug Olear and Andre Rojo, who all flew in from the US.

Sonja – who played detective Kima Greggs in the gritty drama - told Ireland’s Independent newspaper: "We had to be here for this wedding. Dominic is our boy and he is in love with Catherine which is great."

The day after the wedding, the couple returned to the church for the christening of their children Dora, three, two-year-old Senan and one-year-old Francis.

Father Thomas Crawford, who oversaw both services, said: "We had a great day and it is a fabulous weekend for the family. Everyone in Glin is delighted for them.”
