I really wanted to love this device. However, as I write this, there are hundreds of apps/games in the Amazon App store that are showing as not compatible with the "Fire TV", but are compatible with the "Fire TV (Previous Generation)". I have called Amazon's Fire TV Support about this, and when I do the agents put me on hold, and then come back and tell me that Amazon is aware of this issue. I would love for Amazon to comment on this review and tell us that they are working on a fix for this. Here are some details of the data that I have gathered from the Amazon App store.

1) Doing a search for Apps & Games/Fire TV Apps (All Models), it currently comes back with:
Fire TV (3,823)
Fire TV (Previous Generation) (4,059)

2) Doing a search for Apps & Games/Fire TV Apps (All Models):Games, it currently comes back with:
Fire TV (1,030)
Fire TV (Previous Generation): (1,161)

A sampling of some games that I found in the App Store to be compatible with "Fire TV (Previous Generation)", but not with "Fire TV" are:
Grand Theft Auto (various versions), Asphalt 8, Modern Combat 4.

Since the new Fire TV has a more powerful processor than the "Previous Generation", this doesn't make sense to me. I preordered this device to supplement my Fire TV Stick to be able to play all those additional games (that the App Store had said, before this new version, had worked with the Fire TV). Does Amazon have to recertify each of the apps for the new version of the Fire TV, and that hasn't happened yet?

*** Update 10/11/2015:
1) The Grand Theft Auto (GTA) games are now showing in the App Store as compatible with the new Fire TV.

As an owner of rokus, firetv stick, and gen1 firetv box, i'm pleased thus far with this upgrade. Everything has been beefed up, but a couple of downsides also still exist/have been added. Plus one big bonus (for me at least): It can play files off a usb stick!

If you're looking for a quick summary: This box is IMO the new standard in media boxes, it has the most power, a ton of features, and if you're a prime member you have access to a ton of content. The new game controller is a nice refinement over the gen1 controller and amazon seems intent on really expanding their game library. They should have also included the standard remote, since gaming isn't its sole purpose!

Now let's break down the key points:

-New game controller is more ergonomic than the gen1 and adds a headphone port(seriously a great thing to have)
-Doesn't come with the standard remote, rather annoying to use the game controller for media...
-Adds 4k ability, but you need 4k content(netflix charges $4 extra for this), and newer TV with latest HDMI & HDCP spec
-Can play (some) files strait off a usb drive, i tried a 1080 mp4 file, played perfectly. MKV played but no sound (will investigate further)
-Adds more power, it operates very snappy, even the terrible HBO Go app works well
-No more optical output was a big bummer for me, had to purchase an hdmi to optical box (may not pertain to everyone)
-Microsd card port is a great addition and has me hopeful that they will add beefier games for it
-Adds alexa for voice operations, but i already own an echo :)

Gaming
I'm not seeing a big difference over the gen1 box, but i'm rooting for them to really step up their game with... games.

I have already had to manually shut down and restart this new edition of the Amazon Fire TV MORE times than I did on the previous model (which we owned since its release). Not impressed. We are pleased that our previous remotes work with this new edition (our stick remote AND our joystick remote), so we're now enjoying three remotes on this single device. I MUCH prefer the stick-remote over the joystick remote for casual video viewing. Haven't noticed anything significant in the hardware upgrades in this device - especially with an every-other-day needing to power down and restart the device. I would love to be contacted by Amazon with any suggested remedies.

I've been using a roku 3 and a chromecast for more than a year now. The reasons why I wanted to switch over to the Amazon Fire TV is because:
1) it has HBO Now (roku doesn't yet; Chromecast does but requires the use of smartphone as remote control which I hate).
2) has a voice remote. Plenty of times I'd rahter just say what I'm looking for rather than clicking one letter at a time.
3) I have Amazon Prime.
4) I like that it prefetches video content before I even click play, so it loads faster.
5) Freetime parental controls for my 5 year old and 3 year old.
6) 1080p (roku 3 version that I have goes only to 720p).

Review:
BEWARE - the gaming edition does NOT come with a voice remote - the game controller is used as the remote. I wasn't aware of that when I quickly hit the click-to-buy button. Amazon did describe it right by saying exactly what the gaming edition came with, but they also did point the fact out that the game controller is used as the main remote control, too. Unfortunately, I'll be returning the gaming edition for a regular edition because of this. It just doesn't make sense to have my wife and two kids use a game controller to control the Fire TV. It's sorta ridiculous. Sadly, Amazon didn't even label the buttons as far as where the rewind, fast forward, play, and pause buttons are.

Moving forward, set up was pretty easy. It downloaded and installed a couple software updates that took less than 10 minutes to complete. Wifi connected as it should. The Fire was pre-registered by Amazon so i didnt have to sign in with my Amazon password, which was nice.

I like the user interface as it was laid out in a simple, easy to understand fashion. There's even a Prime tab to makenit easier for Prime members.
