Movie Poster of the Week: “The Man Who Fell to Earth” and David Bowie in Movie Posters

13 hours ago | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Above: UK one sheet for The Man Who Fell to Earth (Nicolas Roeg, UK, 1976). Designed and illustrated by Vic Fair.David Bowie, who left our planet this week, appeared in some 20 movies, but his appearances on movie posters are restricted to just a handful of films. Many of his roles, especially in later years, were cameos or small, but significant, character parts. He memorably played Pontius Pilate in Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), Andy Warhol in Julian Schnabel’s Basquiat (1996), and Nikola Tesla in Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige (2006); he appeared as himself in films as varied as Christiane F. (1981), Zoolander (2001) and Bandslam (2009); and he was endearingly strange as an FBI agent in the opening section of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992).His most important and iconic film role by far is his starring role as the titular alien in Nicolas Roeg’s The Man Who Fell to Earth »

Netflix Developing 'The Punisher' Spinoff Series

13 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Last summer, rumors floated that now that they've established their first slate of Netflix programming including "Daredevil," "Jessica Jones," "Luke Cage," and "Iron Fist," Marvel was beginning to take a look at their Phase II slate of shows. And among the contenders to get their own series was The Punisher, Blade and Ghost Rider, which as you might've noticed, have all previously had big screen incarnations (albeit from different studios). Well, it looks like one of them might be on the way. TVLine reports that Netflix is developing "The Punisher," after seeing Jon Bernthal's performance as the character in the upcoming second season of "Daredevil." It seems to pretty early stages as no showrunner or writers have been revealed, but my guess is that they are starting the wheels in motion and perhaps waiting to see what audience response is before giving the whole thing a firm greenlight. But it says something. »

'You're the Worst' Season 3 Preview: Chris Geere and Aya Cash on What's After 'I Love You'

14 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

[Editor's Note: Some light spoilers are below regarding Seasons 1 & 2 of "You're the Worst."] "You're the Worst" has undoubtedly grown exponentially in popularity during its first two seasons. Many critics latched onto the funny, sharp-witted series in its freshman year before being surprised again by an equally hilarious but dramatically honest representation of Gretchen's depression in Season 2. At the show's TCA panel presentation Saturday morning, Fxx boasted the critical lauding of the show (including Indiewire's own No. 3 placement in its 2015 Top 10 list), but the stars and creator were adamant they haven't let the praise go to their heads. "We’re still kind of under the radar because we’re not Shondaland," Aya Cash said. "We’re not 25 million viewers." Geere quickly agreed, pointing out how much the cast loves each other and that they can still appreciate individual reactions via Twitter and other social media as the episodes roll »

Full Soundtrack Details For ‘Batman V Superman’ Revealed, Plus First Listen To "Their War Here"

14 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

For "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," Disney kept the soundtrack details under wraps right up until the film's release so that none of the titles for John Williams' pieces would spoil plot points for fans (ultimately, they were mostly fairly vague anyway). However, Warner Bros. isn't worried about that problem at all, unveiling the track list for Hans Zimmer and Junkie Xl's "Batman v  Superman: Dawn Of Justice" months in advance of the movie. While some fans are crying spoiler, the titles here are also pretty benign (unless you know the plot already, I'd wager). Criterion Adds More Whit Stillman, Howard Hawks & Christian Petzold's 'Phoenix' To The Collection For April

17 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

No company has dominated the cinephile DVD boutique label field quite like The Criterion Collection. While they can’t have everything — there are rights issues, and some studios would rather hold on to their own wares — they're pretty damn close. But if there were ever holes in the Criterion Collection, they’ve been doing a fantastic job of plugging them up of late. The Apu Trilogy collection finally came to the collection last year, the first of many Wim Wenders releases are starting to roll out now, and for modern tastes, they’ve filled the gap in Whit Stillman’s hilarious comedy of manners trilogy (now we just need “The Conversation” and “Il Conformista” on Criterion and we might be settled for a while). Watch: First International Trailer From Paul Verhoeven's Thriller 'Elle' Starring Isabelle Huppert

18 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

In the late 1980s/early ‘90s, Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven was everything. "RoboCop," "Total Recall," and "Basic Instinct” is about as perfect a run as you can get, and these films made a huge pop cultural mark that will likely never be erased. But like Joe Eszterhas, the hot screenwriter paid exorbitant sums of money for his scripts, Verhoeven tumbled rather hard with the Eszerhas-penned “Showgirls.” His next film, “Starship Troopers,” was a bit of a critical reclamation, but it didn’t quite light up the box office. From there it was diminishing returns until the filmmaker took a long break from Hollywood. Read More: Interview: Paul Verhoeven On 'Tricked' & What's Next Including 'Rogue,' 'Hidden Force' & 'Jesus Of Nazareth’ Verhoeven roared back with the excellent and critically acclaimed “Black Book” in 2006, but his 2012 follow-up, the experimental “Tricked,” which used mobile apps and tied into a user-generated TV show, »
