Tom Holland on Losing Weight for ‘In the Heart of the Sea,’ Being a Spider-Man Fan

7 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Nineteen-year-old British actor Tom Holland demonstrated his knack for performing in the title role of “Billy Elliot the Musical” on the London stage, and caught critics’ eyes in 2012’s “The Impossible” alongside Naomi Watts. In May, he takes a super step, playing Spider-Man in 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War.” But first, this month, he shows his physical endurance as a cabin boy aboard the doomed whaling ship Essex in Ron Howard’s “In the Heart of the Sea.”

What attracted you to “In the Heart of the Sea”?

The character Thomas Nickerson was so detailed and so different from anything I’ve done before. (And co-star) Chris Hemsworth — I was always a huge fan of “Thor.” The icing on the cake was (director) Ron Howard.

What does your character do to try to survive?

Everything. This film demonstrates survival is the most powerful instinct man possesses. My character eats his own friend. »

'The Forest' Motion Poster Takes You on a Mind-Bending Trip

9 December 2015 5:37 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Some horror films are based on books, while others are spawned from original ideas. However, some of the scariest movies are those based on a true story, or set in a real place, like the upcoming thriller The Forest. Just a few weeks after the second trailer for The Forest debuted, Focus Features has released a new motion poster, that takes you inside Natalie Dormer's horrific journey, before it hits theaters January 8.

The terrifying Aokigahara Forest, located at the base of Mt. Fuji in Japan, is the suspense-filled setting of the supernatural thriller. The Forest centers on a young American woman, Sara (Natalie Dormer of Game of Thrones and The Hunger Games) journeys there in search of her twin sister, who has mysteriously disappeared. In the company of expatriate Aiden (Taylor Kinney of Chicago Fire), Sara enters the forest having been well warned to "stay on the path."

SAG Nominations: Biggest Snubs and Surprises

9 December 2015 8:22 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

There are always surprises when the Screen Actors Guild Awards announce their nominations — many are still trying to figure out Naomi Watts’ nod last year for “St. Vincent” — and this morning was no exception. On the film side, Helen Mirren walked away the big winner, with three nominations for her work in “Woman in Gold” (lead actress) and “Trumbo” (supporting actress, ensemble.)  And the TV side saw the return of some favorites and a few new additions, including “Mr. Robot” star Rami Malek. As with any awards announcement, there were a few snubs and surprises, which we look at below.

The SAG Awards are the only major awards show that honor only actors, and are voted on by fellow actors, SAG-aftra members. The 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards will air on TNT/TBS on Jan. 30 at 8 p.m. Est.

'Trumbo,' 'The Big Short' & 'Beasts Of No Nation' Surprise At 2016 SAG Award Nominations

9 December 2015 7:10 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Awards season continues to gear up this week: After the critics' groups started to give out their prizes in the last ten days or so, this week sees not just the Golden Globe nominations (tomorrow), but also the start of the Guild nominations. Today, it's the Screen Actors Guild's turn.  With actors making up the biggest demographic in the Academy, the SAG nods often serve as a pretty good indicator of the eventual Oscar nominees: Last year, all five of the Best Ensemble nominees went on to Best Picture nods, and 17 out of the 20 acting nominees doubled up with the Academy. They're not infallible though, as Naomi Watts, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jennifer Aniston would tell you from last year.  Has an unpredictable, wide-open year started to come into focus? Not so much, with a group of nominations that had some surprises in every category. First up, "Joy" and "The Hateful Eight" missed out entirely, »

‘Spider-Man’s’ Tom Holland on ‘Stealing’ From Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Responding to Fan Backlash

8 December 2015 11:49 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

When Marvel Studios announced that British actor Tom Holland was set to play Spider-Man last June, some fans objected and criticized the casting by saying he was too young for the web-slinging role. The negative comments and backlash have only fueled Holland to work harder.

“Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and it just gives me more motivation to prove them wrong when I do start shooting the movie,” Holland told Variety at the premiere of his latest film, “In the Heart of the Sea,” in New York on Monday. “And hopefully I will and it would be good fun.”

Holland’s “In the Heart of the Sea” director, Ron Howard, has no doubt that the 19-year-old will deliver a crowd-pleasing performance as Spider-Man.

‘I Hate Hamlet’ and 7 Other Roles to Audition For

A variety of roles are being cast all over the country. Here are eight film, TV, and theater roles that could be right for you. “I Hate Hamlet”Acting is never easy business, but when fictional television star Andrew Rally finds himself cast as Hamlet after being offered nothing but vapid TV roles, there’s a new sense of “New York City actor” desperation lingering over his life. And only the ghost of the departed stage legend John Barrymore can pull him out of the rut. Auditions are Dec. 14–16 in The Colony, Texas, for leading and supporting roles. “Familiar Things”Supporting roles are being cast out of Austin, Texas, for a film about an elderly man and his granddaughter, who triggers faded memories with a collection of his old belongings. This short shoots Jan. 11–18 in Austin. “The Divergent Series: Allegiant Part 2”Atlanta will host filming for the “Divergent” film series continuation starring Shailene Woodley, »

Oscar Has a Long and Honorable History of ‘Category Fraud’

3 December 2015 2:06 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

I worry about overpopulation. I worry about anyone who texts while driving. However, I do not worry whether studios are campaigning actors as lead or supporting.

“Category fraud” is a harsh term to describe the fact that Oscar strategists are pushing some actors into unexpected categories, in hopes that it works to their advantage. There’s no reason to worry, though, because voters will be the ultimate arbiters, deciding how they want to define a work.

Equally important, the history of awards is filled with blurred lines, and over the years, most people have stopped questioning it.

Fox campaigned Sigourney Weaver as supporting actress for the 1979 film “Alien.” Naomi Watts was pushed supporting for “Mulholland Drive.” Marlon Brando won an Oscar as lead actor for “The Godfather,” even though his onscreen time was a fraction of Al Pacino’s, who was a supporting nominee.

In 1964’s “Dr. Strangelove,” Peter Sellers played three roles, »

Love and Other Catastrophes rewatched: a spritzy comedy full of chutzpah

Emma-Kate Croghan’s indie flick has the verbal ping pong of a Kevin Smith joint crossed with the good-natured repartee of a Nora Ephron movie

Film history is dotted with stories of immensely talented people who launched their careers with a bang then disappeared from the scene far too quickly. What a shame we haven’t seen more from writer/director Emma-Kate Croghan, who rose to acclaim in the 90s and has made only two feature films: 1999’s Strange Planet (with Claudia Karvan and Naomi Watts) and 1996’s Love and Other Catastrophes.
