The 15 Biggest Golden Globes Snubs and Surprises

18 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The Golden Globes are known for their unpredictability, and this year’s awards were among the Golden Globe-iest in that regard. While many of the top film champs, including major victories for “The Revenant,” “The Martian,” breakout ingenue Brie Larson and comeback kid Sylvester Stallone, can hardly be dubbed surprises, the TV picks were considerably more left field. And there were a couple of stunners in the movie races too.

Here are 15 of the biggest snubs and surprises from the 2016 Golden Globes:

Snub: “Carol

Though it had the most nominations of any film, Todd Haynes’ quiet period lesbian romance failed to win any awards against flashier competition like “The Revenant.” With two lead actress nominations, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara may have split the votes.

Surprise: Kate Winslet and Aaron Sorkin, “Steve Jobs

The surprises started early when Kate Winslet nabbed the night’s first film award for supporting actress in Universal’s underperforming biopic. »

Leonardo DiCaprio Thought Pal Jonah Hill's Revenant Bear Gag During the Golden Globes Was 'Amazing'

9 hours ago | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

The Golden Globes censors might not have seen the humor in Jonah Hill's onstage bit as the bear from The Revenant, but Leonardo DiCaprio definitely did. "That was amazing that Jonah did that," DiCaprio, who won the Globe for best actor in a motion picture, drama, told reporters in the press room on Sunday night. In case you missed it, Hill donned a bear hat when he took the stage to present the best supporting actress in a movie award, and cracked some profanity-laden jokes about being snubbed at the ceremony in favor of The Revenant "costar" DiCaprio. 5 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Disney and Lucasfilm are inching closer to finding their young Han Solo for the upcoming untitled “Star Wars” spinoff.

Sources tell Variety that after seeing thousands of actors, execs have cut the list down to about a dozen actors with Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Dave Franco, Jack Reynor, Scott Eastwood, Logan Lerman, “Brooklyn” star Emory Cohen and “Everybody Wants Some” actor Blake Jenner among the names making the cut.

NDAs and test deals are still being worked out, but producer Kathleen Kennedy and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will begin testing the new group with a decision expected in the next couple of weeks.

The film does not shoot until next January, but sources close to the situation say the reason for such an early decision has more to do with another “Star Wars” film currently shooting, rather than the untitled “Han Solo” pic. While insiders were unable to confirm, »

‘Creed’ Sequel Aims for November 2017 Release (Exclusive)

3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

MGM is eyeing a November 2017 release date for the sequel to “Creed,” Variety has learned.

That would allow the film to open exactly two years after the first chapter starring Michael B. Jordan hit theaters. The Warner Bros. release has gone on to gross more than $105 million at the domestic box office and land Sylvester Stallone a Golden Globe for best supporting actor. “That’s my goal,” MGM CEO Gary Barber told Variety on Sunday night at the Golden Globes of his release plan, adding that the date hasn’t been set in stone yet.

If the movie does come out that soon, it could mean that Ryan Coogler — who is in talks to direct Marvel’s “Black Panther” –might not be able to return as director.

In a recent cover story with Variety, Stallone alluded to the possibility that Coogler would be an executive producer of the second “Creed” due to scheduling. »

Brixton's Ritzy cinema (where the mural is located) reportedly put out a call on social media to have a street party (a nod to Bowie's famous song with Mick Jagger) outside their theater to pay tribute to Bowie, putting the words "Our Brixton boy" on its marquee. 17 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

This is it, One Day at a Time fans: Netflix and Sony Pictures Television are reviving the classic Norman Lear sitcom for a new generation — but with a twist. The streaming giant has ordered 13 episodes of a new, Lear-produced One Day in which Bonnie Franklin’s iconic single-mom character, Ann Romano, will now be Cuban-American rather than Italian. Men of a Certain Age and Enlisted co-creator Mike Royce, a sitcom veteran who worked on CBS’s Everybody Loves Raymond, is partnering with How I Met Your Mother and iZombie writer/producer Gloria Calderon Kellett to write and executive-produce the new take. Instead of being an Indianapolis divorcée, the as-yet-uncast lead of the new show will now be a freshly separated ex-military servicewoman trying to raise her two kids with the assistance of her tradition-minded Cuban-born mother. Watch David Bowie Get Real in 1983 and Criticize MTV for Not Airing Videos by Black Artists

34 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

MTV had a landmark year in 1983. The network broke into the mainstream following the airing of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" music video in heavy rotation, a decision that was forced upon the network by Walter Yetnikoff, the president of Jackson's record label. The network initially refused to air the video because it was made by a black artist. That criticism was not just from Jackson's label, however. Also in 1983, during an interview with Mark Goodman, David Bowie used his platform on MTV itself to criticize the network for its lack of videos by black artists. In the interview, Bowie points out, "There seem to be a lot of black artists making very good videos that I'm surprised aren't being used on MTV." Now we can forever remember 1983 as the year Bowie and Jackson made MTV get its act together. »

So, Can The Revenant Really Win Best Picture?

William Goldman likes to say that “nobody knows anything” when it comes to Hollywood, but even so, the big winner at last night’s Golden Globes caught us especially flat-footed. Not a single industry pundit polled by Gold Derby had picked The Revenant to win Best Drama, but it picked up that big trophy in addition to two more for Best Director and Best Actor. Since it happened, I’ve had people asking me if they should take those Globe wins seriously, and whether this Leonardo DiCaprio survival story has a real shot at winning Best Picture at the Oscars.Let’s take these questions one at a time. Should you take the Golden Globes seriously? No! You shouldn’t! The Globes are voted on by fewer than a hundred foreign journalists who toil mostly in obscurity (if they toil at all). The Big Short Director Adam McKay Might Tackle Global Warming With His Next Film

Since its release, The Big Short has made good money and vaulted into the ranks of Best Picture front-runners. Is It Too Late for Justin Bieber to Say Sorry for Ending Adele’s Hot 100 Reign?

1 hour ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

After a solid ten weeks ruling over the entire music industry, someone has finally snatched Queen Adele's crown: On this week's Billboard Hot 100, Justin Bieber has done the impossible and overcome Adele for the No. 1 spot. His soca-lite "Sorry" has bumped "Hello" to the second slot more than two months after both songs debuted on the chart in the same week, with Adele then at No. 1 and Bieber at No. 2. Finally, the roles have reversed, giving Bieber his second career No. 1 ("What Do You Mean?" also went No. 1 back in September), while another Purpose hit, "Love Yourself," is on the other side of Adele at No. 3.
