Hilarious New 'Legends of Tomorrow' promo and stunning cast photos

24 December 2015 12:07 PM, PST

The cast of "Legends of Tomorrow" looks amazing in these new promotional photos. They also look ready to take on disco in this fun new promo for the pilot, which debuts in January.  From all the trailers released so far, "Legends of Tomorrow" is shaping up to become one of the most intense, action-heavy shows of the season. This new promo, titled "Humanity's Last Hope", shows the characters in a different light -- a more humorous light. While the "Legends" team is tasked with saving the world -- albeit an important job -- this promo also shows they can have some fun while doing it. Check out the cast photos and new promo below: "Legends of Tomorrow" premieres January 21, 2016 on The CW.   »

The 5 most underrated performances on 'American Idol'

24 December 2015 9:31 AM, PST

"American Idol" just unleashed its final season preview. It should touch you. You get just the right glimpses of Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Phillip Phillips, and a few other winners who filled you with strange, hopeful glee all those years ago. You remember most of the big names of the series. But there are some others you should recall too. Here are our five favorite underrated performances in the show's history. 1. Katelyn Epperly, "The Scientist" (Season 9) Ellen DeGeneres was doomed as a panelist when she declared this rendition "too slow." Iowa native Katelyn Epperly made Coldplay's "The Scientist" a proper ballad with this hushed rendering. She gets better and better as she goes along, adding color and dynamic. I 2. Didi Benami, "Play With Fire" (Season 9) Didi Benami triumphed (and kind of failed) in a number of rad ways here. What I love: She picked a song meaningful to her, »

Here are the scariest movie moments of 2015

23 December 2015 4:18 PM, PST

Be advised: there are some plot spoilers in the following article and accompanying video. Proceed with caution. It was a scary year at the movies, wasn't it? And gross, too. Very, very gross. The scalping scene in "Bone Tomahawk," to cite just one example, ranks as one of the most horrendous displays of human cruelty and degradation I have ever seen on film. I'm conflicted about that disturbing moment in S. Craig Zahler's very good Western, which also sees the character in question being split in two as he screams in agony. While it doesn't particularly lend itself to satisfied squeals of glee from gorehounds in the way that, say, one of the "Saw" movies would, something feels unnecessary about the way Zahler lingers over the savage act. Conversely, by presenting the moment without frills -- no eerie soundtrack cues, no gratuitous closeups of torn flesh (so as to »

How 'Revenant' star Tom Hardy helped me realize I am out of the junket business

23 December 2015 2:30 PM, PST

You don't pick the moments where things spin out of control, and as I'm learning this week, you certainly can't pick the moment when the tabloids decide to learn your name. I often refer to "my job" in different contexts, and what that term means is different things on different days, depending on what demands are being made of me. Some days, I'm a critic. Some days, I'm an interviewer. Some days are just about cultural commentary. Some days are more about making myself laugh. There are days I am fortunate enough to be able to combine my two favorite things, movies and being a parent, into something that has been genuinely fulfilling. And then there are the press junkets. First, I'll use this space to say that I'm done with junkets. I've been done with them for a while, but I am genuinely done with them now. That's not »

The internet has finally discovered Gene Kelly's butt

23 December 2015 11:46 AM, PST

As long as we've had big studio movies, we've had gorgeous male movie stars. Your grandmother (or great-grandmother) clutched her heart and the nearest banister when Rudolph Valentino, Errol Flynn, or Tyrone Power visited the silver screen. In fact, anybody with a working circulatory system lit up at those foxes. They are timelessly stunning. That's why it's a little disappointing to remember that male movie stars' bodies were never properly objectified in Hollywood's Golden Age. You had your brawny Johnny Weissmuller types, but they were deviations from the norm: slick, dashing, winking leading men. It wasn't until Biblical epics and gladiator pictures that we were gifted with regular doses of thigh sinew.  But now, finally, a heaven-sent Tumblr user internet is rectifying this historical slight with a tribute to one of the most under-appreciated bodies and derrieres in cinema. Behold, a Tumblr devoted to Gene Kelly's butt.  http://genekellysbutt. »

Robert De Niro talks Martin Scorsese and Jennifer Lawrence

23 December 2015 11:23 AM, PST

Robert De Niro sees some similarities between the dynamic between he and Martin Scorsese had in the early part of his career and the one between Jennifer Lawrence and David O. Russell now. The key, in his mind, though, is being able to just get the movie made. “When you are fortunate enough to have someone as an actor who has the clout to get a movie made,” the actor said. “And you can make a movie that’s really creative and your vision, you’re lucky.  Very few actors in fact do have that kind of power, and Lawrence is one of them. Take a look at what De Niro had to say in the player above. You can also watch our interview with Lawrence herself below, in which she gives her perspective on the dynamic with O. Russell and being a woman in Hollywood. »

Oh good, Jeffrey Dean Morgan is playing two sadistic fiends next year

23 December 2015 10:51 AM, PST

Jeffrey Dean Morgan is playing two big villains next year: 1) the sadistic Negan in "The Walking Dead Season 6 - Part 2" and 2) this gun-toting lunatic in writer/director Jose "Alfonso's son" Cuaron's harrowing illegal immigrant thriller "Desierto": This looks interesting. It's edited like the trailer for a horror film, despite grappling with a real-life situation (that German Shepherd is more terrifying than anything in "Insidious"). Also, am I the only one who initially thought that those poor immigrants were being knocked over by something supernatural instead of actual bullets? Because it did look like that, at first? "Desierto" is slated for release on March 4th. »

Merry Christmas! Here's a teaser for a show about the Antichrist.

23 December 2015 8:48 AM, PST

Continuing its sub-genre of TV shows based on movies about troubled young men, A&E will continue the story of "The Omen" with "Damien" next year. The little boy from the movie is now a (hot) grown man and trying to deal with the fact that he is the Antichrist in this coming-of-age tale.  A&E gave us a more substantive look at the show last July during Comic-Con, but the teaser it dropped last night is pretty cool, and continues the franchise's fine tradition of women falling to their deaths. It's all for you, Damien. The new series #Damien is coming in 2016. https://t.co/rBATzJtMMj — A&E Network (@Aetv) December 22, 2015 »

'Orange Is the New Black' does 'Twas the Night Before Christmas'

23 December 2015 8:02 AM, PST

Happy holidays from Litchfield, where Santa Claus made an ill-advised stop and got jumped.  As recounted by the stars of "Orange Is the New Black," old St. Nick landed his sleigh, driven by "eight little cute-ass reindeer," in the yard. When the inmates realized that he had a bag full of swag, they "May have robbed and roughed up St. Nick."  And just what did the bag contain? Books, grass (like, sod. Not pot), tampons, porn (for the guards) and much more! It's a little gift for fans while we wait for Season 4, which will probably premiere in the summer.   »

'Galaxy of Fear': Remembering 'Star Wars'' all-but-forgotten Ya horror series

22 December 2015 6:05 PM, PST

In case you hadn't heard, it's been a pretty big week for "Star Wars." Not only has Jj Abrams' "The Force Awakens" crushed every box office record in its path, critics love it and today it even received a nomination for Best Picture at the Critics' Choice Awards despite missing the eligible screening period. This movie is unstoppable, and woe be unto those who just don't get it. With "Star Wars" fervor in full swing, today I'll be taking a brief, nostalgic look back at a little-remembered "Ya series entitled "Galaxy of Fear." Between 1997 and 1998, this 12-book series (one of the few outings in the "Star Wars" extended universe to traffic directly in the horror genre) chronicled the adventures of Tash and Zak Arranda, a brother-sister duo who navigated "Goosebumps"-style terrors within the "Star Wars" universe. Here are seven things you need to know about the all-but-forgotten series. »

The greatest award show performances of 2015

22 December 2015 5:37 PM, PST

You might think there are too many awards shows. You'd be wrong. Because if they constantly turn out performances like the ten below, we should have a new awards telecast every single day. Here are the ten best awards show performances of 2015.  10. Chris Stapleton and Justin Timberlake at the Country Music Association Awards, "Tennessee Whiskey" Chris Stapleton is undoubtedly the year's breakout country music star, and he even has a shot at Album of the Year at the upcoming Grammy Awards. This duet with Justin Timberlake was inspired, rad, and a pulsing, soulful version of a bona fide smash. 9. Kelly Clarkson at the Billboard Music Awards, "Invincible" With the possible exception of the #2 artist on this list, Kelly Clarkson is perhaps our most trusted live pop performer. "Invincible" gave Clarkson a chance to belt, endear us with her casual vulnerability, and wow us with some closing notes worthy of another "American Idol" crown. »

‘Star Wars’: Here’s why Gwendoline Christie still loves ‘A New Hope’

22 December 2015 3:14 PM, PST

Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is heading into another big weekend, as the Christmas holiday is upon us. One character that was a fan-favorite even prior the release of the film, and who many are looking forward to seeing more of, is Gwendoline Christie’s Captain Phasma. I was able to sit down with the actress -- who is perhaps most famously known for her portrayal of Brienne of Tarth on HBO’s “Game of Thrones” -- during the press day for “The Force Awakens.” There she revealed her favorite “Star Wars” film and her very “Force Awakens” holiday plans.  Gwendoline Christie: 'Game of Thrones' vs. 'Star Wars' Film critics, pundits, and fans are already busy working out where “The Force Awakens” fits into their overall “Star Wars” franchise rankings. Excluding the film that she is a part of, though, it’s back to basics for Christie. »

Kurt Russell is wrong about violence in the movies

22 December 2015 2:15 PM, PST

While making the press rounds earlier this month for Quentin Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight," Kurt Russell entered into a heated debate with Hollywood Elsewhere founder Jeffrey Wells over the issue of gun control (he doesn't believe in regulations) and violence in the movies (he doesn't believe it influences real-life violence). You can listen to the audio and read a transcript here for the full context of their conversation.  HitFix is an entertainment site, so I won't be tackling Russell's comments about gun control, which I disagree with. His opinions on violence in the movies, however, are fair game. First, here's the relevant portion of his conversation with Wells:   Wells: "I think there’s a feeling about shootings and violence right now…I think it’s different in 2015 than it was in the mid ’90s. But Quentin is still playing the same game more or less." Russell: "Well, Quentin does what he does. »

Is Harvey Weinstein right? s the December Oscar-bait glut why we can't have nice things?

Review: We've finally reached peak Tarantino with 'The Hateful Eight'

22 December 2015 12:45 PM, PST

As much as any mainstream film consumer has an opinion, positive or negative, about "Star Wars," it is likely that they also have an opinion, positive or negative, about Quentin Tarantino, as big a brand as any working filmmaker. At this point in his career, he's the reason I go to the theater. I don't care what the subject matter is, who's in it, or when it's released. I will go see any movie Quentin makes, no matter what, because he's earned that at this point. When he makes a film, he does it with a voice and an attitude and a style that is clearly and unmistakably his, and by now, if you're even remotely interested in his movies, you have a pretty good idea what sort of thing you're in for when you go to see "The Hateful Eight." In what seems very fitting in a year where »

Can the seeds of a future 'Star Wars' story film be found in 'The Force Awakens'?

22 December 2015 12:43 PM, PST

This does Not contain a spoiler from “The Force Awakens,” but there is a mention of a reveal made to the press prior to the film's release…A story element that doesn’t actually make it into the "The Force Awakens" itself, but perhaps hints at things to come. It turns out that Yoda was an associate one of the central character’s in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Could J.J. Abrams and the team at Lucasfilm be laying the groundwork for a future “Star Wars” story film? Roth Cornet and Donna Dickens discuss if the “Star Wars” spin-off films may or may not feature a Yoda origin story in the video above and below. In which Jennifer Lawrence screams in the next room while we're asking about her

22 December 2015 12:15 PM, PST

Jennifer Lawrence is arguably the only true movie star of her generation. She is also, by Hitfix’s estimation, somewhat of a Millennial Messiah.  At 25, Lawrence has two mega franchises under her belt, "The Hunger Games" and "X-Men," as well as thee Academy Award nominations and one win for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for "Silver Linings Playbook" in 2012, her first collaboration with director David O. Russell. We ask industry veterans, and co-stars of her latest O. Russell film “Joy,” what they make of the Jennifer Lawrence phenomena.   Displaying just some of what she has to offer in terms of a filterless response, Lawrence can be heard screaming unabashedly from the next room during one of our chats. We later discovered that – in a display of impeccable taste – Lawrence was unleashing a show of envious enthusiasm when Amy Schumer texted her an image of an encounter with their mutual hero, »

This awards show bent its own rules to give ‘Star Wars’ a Best Picture nom

22 December 2015 11:53 AM, PST

The Force even holds its sway over awards voters. After demolishing box office records its first weekend in theaters, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is showing its prowess in awards season. The 2016 Critics’ Choice Award nominations were announced over a week ago, on December 14, but “Force Awakens” got a last-minute nomination today. The Broadcast Film Critics Association (Bfca) today announced that “Force Awakens” has earned a Critics’ Choice Award nomination for Best Picture. The film was not screened for Bfca voters in time for nominations balloting, but after seeing the new tale of a galaxy far, far away, the the board of directors held a special vote to make “Force Awakens” the 11th Best Picture nominee. All other categories remain as previously announced. This is a rare though not totally unprecedented move by the Bfca. In 2000, “Cast Away” was also screened too late for normal consideration and the Bfca included it among 11 best picture nominees. »
