Diagnosis & Testing of Mucormycosis
How Do I Know if I Have Mucormycosis?
If you have symptoms of the infection, you should see your health care provider. A health care provider can diagnose mucormycosis by taking a sample of infected tissue and sending it to a laboratory. There, the sample will be examined under a microscope.
Clinical Diagnosis
The microbiological or pathological demonstration of Mucorales in infected tissues is helpful in obtaining a diagnosis. Culture of non-sterile sites (e.g., lung or sinuses) is helpful in patients with infection that is clinically consistent with mucormycosis. Mucorales may be difficult to differentiate from other filamentous fungi; experienced pathological and microbiological assistance is often helpful. No routine serologic tests for mucormycosis are currently available. DNA-based techniques for detection are not yet fully standardized or commercially available.
