Joy is the story of a family across four generations and the woman who rises to become founder and matriarch of a powerful family business dynasty.
Director:David O. Russell |

The Buzz: Jennifer Lawrence and David O'Russell don't quite create magic their third time around, as Joy never quite comes to life in an enegaging way despite Lawrence's commanding screen presence and a role custom-fit to her talent. On the movie-making side, there's just not a lot of swirling, camera-sweeping drama that has become an O'Russell trademark.
Point Break (2015)- Action | Crime | Sport | Thriller
A young FBI agent infiltrates an extraordinary team of extreme sports athletes he suspects of masterminding a string of unprecedented, sophisticated corporate heists. "Point Break" is inspired by the classic 1991 hit.
Director:Ericson Core |

The Buzz: When I first heard they were remaking Point Break, I echoed the screams of "Why??????" I have seen the original so many times I could do a puppet show. But after watching the trailer I was surprisingly intrigued and can see that cinematographer turned director Ericson Core has taken the action to another level. I just hope he keeps one of my favorite quotes: "Little hand says it's time to rock and roll." - Michelle Nelson
Daddy's Home (2015)- Comedy
A mild-mannered radio executive strives to become the best stepdad to his wife's two children, but complications ensue when their freewheeling and freeloading real father arrives, forcing him to compete for the affection of the kids.

The Buzz: December is all about enjoying silly movies with the fambam. This is going to be a great one for an afternoon out - especially if you need to cool down hot heads and smooth over tiffs during a big family trip. No holiday is complete without a little Will Ferrell and some slapstick! - Chako Suzuki
Concussion (2015)- Drama | Sport
In Pittsburgh, accomplished pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu uncovers the truth about brain damage in football players who suffer repeated concussions in the course of normal play.
Director:Peter Landesman |

The Buzz: Will Smith makes an issue movie with Peter Landesman, the screenwriter who made his directorial debut with Parkland a couple years ago. The subject matter has earned a fair amount of press over the last several months but it feels like very few people are talking about the movie itself. Perhaps it's not too late for Smith to film a cameo in Independence Day: Resurgence?
The Big Short (2015) - [Nationwide Expansion]- Biography | Drama
Four outsiders in the world of high-finance who predicted the credit and housing bubble collapse of the mid-2000s decide to take on the big banks for their lack of foresight and greed.
Director:Adam McKay |

The Buzz: There was nothing funny about the 2008 collapse of the American mortgage market, but in the hands of Anchorman director Adam McKay, it's the foundation for a dark, smart comedy. An all-star cast including Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, and Steve Carell portray the real-life Chicken Littles who realized that the crisis was coming, and figured out how to use it to make themselves rich. First it will make you laugh, then it will make you angry. Carell's insane toupee alone is worth the price of admission. - Sara Bibel
The Hateful Eight (2015) - [Limited]- Drama | Mystery | Thriller | Western
In the dead of a Wyoming winter, a bounty hunter and his prisoner find shelter in a cabin currently inhabited by a collection of nefarious characters.
Director:Quentin Tarantino |

The Buzz: Quentin Tarantino's 70mm roadshow rolls out this week before The Hateful Eight goes nationwide on January 1st. Greeting the movie's initial release are standard reviews celebrating the movie's humor and acknowledging its ultra-violence, so look for box-office returns to fall somewhere between the totals for Inglourious Basterds ($120 million U.S.) and Django Unchained ($162 million U.S.) and continued talk about the revival of actually-on-film filmmaking and actual-real film projectors.
The Revenant (2015) - [Limited]- Adventure | Drama | Thriller | Western
In the 1820s, a frontiersman named Hugh Glass sets out on a path of vengeance against those who left him for dead after a bear mauling.
Director:Alejandro González Iñárritu |
|

The Buzz: More than worthy of its place on countless top 10 lists this year is Alejandro González Iñárritu's brutal and naturalistic follow-up to Birdman, which you might wind up watching with your hands mostly covering your eyes after the Leo vs. bear scene that everyone is talking about. The film is convincing in so many ways; namely, reinforcing our opinion that Tom Hardy should mainly play bad guys.
45 Years (2015) - [Limited]- Drama | Romance
In the week leading up to their 45th wedding anniversary, a couple receive an unexpected letter which contains potentially life changing news.
Director:Andrew Haigh |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Love that Andrew Haigh follows up his Weekend with another relationship drama, and I understand 45 Years begins with a gun shot and then rewinds the narrative as long-married couple's history unravels when an incident from one of their pasts resurfaces. Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay were awarded Best Actress/Best Actor trophies at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year, and both performers have been tipped for potential Oscar nominations. - Arno
