Late Night Television: 2016’s Defining Moments For Jimmy Fallon, John Oliver and More

23 December 2016 8:36 AM, PST | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

2016 was a watershed year for the genre defined as “late night,” even as we saw a redefinition of what late night television might be (thanks to Netflix and Hulu), as well as an explosion of new talent taking on the format, including (Gasp!) women. While each host had their own approach to tackling current events and more, in looking back at the last 12 months it was relatively easy to pinpoint a defining moment for each of them — for better, and for worse.

Oh boy, did Jimmy Fallon have a lot of fun this year! He played games and did lip sync battles and goofed around with his famous guests and made the Republican candidate for President seem like a nice normal guy who can take a joke! Liam Neeson Terrorizes Christmas in Santa Claus Audition Video

20 December 2016 4:38 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

With just five days left until Christmas, everyone is getting in the holiday spirit, even big-screen bad-ass Liam Neeson. The actor recently stopped by CBS' late night series The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, to promote two new movies hitting theaters in limited release this week, Focus Features' A Monster Calls and Paramount's Silence, both of which could be awards season favorites. The actor even made it clear during his interview that there are no plans for Taken 4, but before the interview, the actor had a little fun with sketch that aired during the talk show.

In case you missed his appearance this week, The Late Show debuted the sketch on their YouTube for all to see, and it may just become a new holiday classic. The two-minute video shows Liam Neeson dressed in a full Santa Claus costume, as he auditions to become the new mall Santa. It's »

Taken 4 isn’t happening, confirms Liam Neeson

19 December 2016 10:26 PM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Simon Brew Dec 20, 2016

Liam Neeson's time with the Taken series is done, he says.

After Taken 2 was made, and before it became a smash hit, Liam Neeson cautioned against talk of a Taken 3, suggesting that the series might have run its narrative course. Many millions of dollars later, Taken 3 was greenlit, with Neeson again suggesting that Taken on the big screen was done after this one.

On this occasion, despite many more millions of dollars heading in the franchise’s direction, it does seem as though the Taken movie boxset is complete.

Neeson is currently on the interview and publicity trail for his new movie, Martin Scorsese’s Silence, and he appeared on Stephen Colbert’s show in the Us as part of that. When quizzed as to whether there would be a Taken 4, Neeson this time was adamant. “No, there’s not”, he said. “There »

Taken 4 Is Not Happening Says Liam Neeson

19 December 2016 1:44 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Taken 3 rounded out the Taken trilogy last year, and though it did well at the box office, it wasn't really received very well by anyone, be it fans or critics. The law of diminishing returns, at least on the quality side of things, caught up with the franchise, but it did make money, so is there a chance we are going to see Taken 4 at some point? According to Liam Neeson, absolutely not.

The actor recently appeared on The Late Show in order to promote his upcoming movie A Monster Calls, which is getting some very positive buzz ahead of its release. Stephen Colbert found some time to ask him about the possibility of Taken 4 happening at some point, and Liam Neeson makes it clear that there is absolutely no chance of that, at least to his knowledge. Here is what he had to say.

"No, there's not. There's »

TV Review: HBO and Fusion’s ‘Outpost’

19 December 2016 6:16 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

We are in the era of television programming where a docuseries originally developed for Snapchat is now debuting on an HBO channel. “Outpost,” a 10-episode half-hour docuseries developed by Fusion, is mostly made up of even shorter vignettes. The pilot episode is comprised of two 15-minute segments; later episodes put three vignettes together. For an adventure/investigation show, these are rather quick forays into far-off lands — the season ranges from Oaxaca to Argentina, from Easter Island to Suriname. But specificity is “Outpost’s” mission — to not just visit these locales but to understand a piece of the local concerns. What the series picks out to focus on feel focus-grouped for that particular combination of the buzzy, the unexpected, and the far-flung — kite-surfing in Colombia, marijuana in Paraguay, surfing therapy in Nicaragua.

“Outpost” seems developed in the vein of HBO’s programming with Vice — which spans specials, newscasts, and a weekly series — with a more upbeat sentiment. Instead »

Shep Smith On ‘Late Show’: Donald Trump Brought Us All To His Tower To Worship At His Feet

“What is it like now over at Fox News now that Roger Ailes is gone?” Stephen Colbert asked guest Shep Smith when the Fnc star guested on The Late Show. “The whole channel was just born out of his skull 20 years ago. Is it rudderless? Are you guys like a cork in a typhoon?” Shep insisted Fnc was Rupert Murdoch's vision “and it's Rupert Murdoch who's running the place now, and it's fantastic.” “But, you have to miss Roger Ailes on a certain level, right,” Colbert said, not… »

Stephen Colbert Hilariously Stages Career Intervention for James Franco: ‘We All Love You'

16 December 2016 1:43 PM, PST | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

Stephen Colbert wants James Franco to take a break from his "insane" work schedule.

The Late Show host staged a hilarious career intervention while interviewing the 38-year-old actor on Thursday.

"Why do you not want a free moment because that's when the demons come?" Colbert jokingly asked after listing some of Franco’s 60 projects for the year. "Why don't you take a moment to breathe James Franco?"

Franco admitted that he may be addicted to working.

“I think I have a problem,” the Why Him? star lightheartedly confessed before revealing that he’s “trying to slow down.”

Colbert went on to expose his alleged motivation for having Franco on the show.

"This is not actually a TV show," warned the late-night talk show host. "This is an intervention, James Franco. We all love you. Please lock the door."

There's no two ways about it: 2016 was a crap year. How crap? Just ask Stephen Colbert, Michael Stipe and James Franco, who got together on The Late Show on Thursday night (Dec. 15) to remake R.E.M.'s "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" as a eulogy for a rough 12 months.

Here are some of the not-great things Colbert ran down in his year in review (Stipe was so upset he had to just stand mute and roll his eyes): Zika, Harambe, Flint's tainted water, the N.C. bathroom bill, the fall of Fox »

Culturally and politically speaking, 2016 has been a rough year for many people out there. The numerous celebrity deaths and the political disappointments alone, coupled with the increasing surreality of daily life, have all added up to one mess of a year, and as it comes to a close, many are still grappling with it. Darlene Love Thankful to Have a Home at The View After David Letterman Left The Late Show

15 December 2016 9:20 AM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Thanks to The View, Darlene Love's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" has a new home. For 28 years, Love performed her signature holiday hit on CBS' The Late Show. David Letterman left the late-night show in May 2015, turning Love into a free agent. The 75-year-old singer still performs the 1963 classic at concerts around the country, including yearly gigs in New York City. Love was invited to sing on ABC's popular morning show in 2015, and she was asked to do it again on Friday's episode of The View. Colbert’s ‘Claymation Christmas Special’ Isn’t Quite a Holiday Classic (Video)

15 December 2016 7:28 AM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

On Tuesday, Stephen Colbert and “The Late Show” cranked out a charming and humorous cold-open ode to Charlie Brown. The following night, they followed up with a claymation Christmas special, which taught everyone a lesson about old-school production constraints and deadlines. The joke of the sketch was how crappy the whole effort turned out, so don’t yell at TheWrap for pointing out the obvious. As block-of-clay-with-a-beard St. Nick put it: “Santa didn’t realize how much time it took to do stop-motion animation, but he does understand the commitment to CBS for a novelty holiday special.” Also Read: Good Grief: Santa Tells Peanuts. »

Stephen Colbert’s Donald Trump Interview Rewrites ‘Rocky IV’ History (Video)

13 December 2016 7:53 AM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

The Late Show” editors are at it again. Stephen Colbert’s CBS talker hacked up another Donald Trump interview to make the president-elect appear foolish and in Russia’s pocket. This time, the influence was proven by a well-placed “Rocky IV” test question. “Do you think Rocky beat Ivan Drago in ‘Rocky IV’?” Colbert asks. Stephen Colbert enlisted Norah Jones and Jon Batiste to help him debut a maddening, so-bad-it's-good holiday tune titled "Christmas Is Now" on The Late Show Monday.

As Colbert explained, the song was written to bump Paul McCartney and Wings' "Wonderful Christmas Time" from the top spot of "worst Christmas songs of all time." True to his promise, Colbert, in an ugly knit sweater, began beating the song into ears, brains and hearts everywhere as he harmonized with Batiste, "Christmas is now, Christmas is now/ Now it is Christmas and Christmas is now. »

Stephen Colbert Tells Pizzagate Conspiracy Theorists to "Grow the F— Up"

Stephen Colbert addressed the Pizzagate conspiracy theory and its subsequent real-world consequences on Wednesday's The Late Show.

The host started off by talking about the fake news epidemic, saying it's important to distinguish between real news, entertainment and fake stories. "I really hope you don't get your news from me because, news flash: This isn't news; this is entertainment," said Colbert. "Don't go to some anonymous guy on social media, because a lot of the news on social media is a lie."
