'The Force Awakens' Crosses $300 Million Mark, Set to Smash Christmas Records

23 December 2015 12:00 PM, PST

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is flying through the box office at hyperspace-level speed.

The movie already set records for biggest domestic weekend ever and biggest Monday ever. Now, it's also got the record for biggest Tuesday ever, and the fastest movie to cross the $300 million mark. It took the latest "Star Wars" film just five days to do so, beating out the previous record holder, "Jurassic World," which needed eight days.

"The Force Awakens" raked in $37.3 million on Tuesday, and now has a global tally of $689.4 million. And the money-making extravaganza is far from over: Fandango estimates Friday's sales will top all past Christmas Day totals, and MovieTickets.com says "Star Wars" accounts for 83 percent of its Friday sales.

It could be a historic Christmas weekend at the box office. As Deadline notes, the last time Christmas was on a Friday, movies including "Avatar," "Sherlock Holmes," and "It's Complicated" made over $280 million total. »

The 'Fifty Shades of Black' Red Band Trailer Is Every Shade of Nasty

23 December 2015 9:40 AM, PST

"Fifty Shades of Grey" gets f--ked every which way by Marlon Wayans in the new red band trailer for "Fifty Shades of Black." The "red band" status is probably from all the f-bombs and that n-bomb, plus there's the nastiness with smelling fingers, getting eaten out, going "balls deep," spitting into locks, passing around mothers, and flinging sticky underwear.

As one character puts it at the end, "F--k to the no. You need to find Jesus, that's what you can do!" It's less hot than hurl, but many viewers probably feel the same about the real "Fifty Shades."

This "outrageous comedy" parody stars Wayans as Mr. Black, but it also features Kali Hawk, Mike Epps, Andrew Bachelor, Affion Crockett, and -- this is odd -- Jane Seymour, Fred Willard, and Florence Henderson. Yes, Mrs. Brady signed up for a movie where a stripper f--ks a woman pregnant right on stage. »

'Orange Is the New Black' Inmates Rob Santa in 'Twas a Night in Litchfield'

23 December 2015 9:08 AM, PST

If only Netflix would give us "Orange Is the New Black" Season 4 for Christmas. Sigh. The wait is going to be a bit longer for that, but Netflix did give us the holiday gift of the Oitnb cast performing "'Twas a Night in Litchfield."

The two-and-a-half minute video is just as it sounds, a hilarious prison version of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas." As the inmates explain, they were settling down for a long beauty nap when "an old white dude" (no, not Jesus, Pennsatucky) and "eight little cute-ass reindeer" showed up. After that, the ladies "May have robbed and roughed up Saint Nick." But hey, when some random guy shows up you have to be prepared, right? It turns out he was bringing them books for the library, grass for the yard, eyeliner, tampons, and porn for the guards, among other treats.

Should 'Modern Family' Cast Miss Colombia as Gloria's Doppelganger?

23 December 2015 8:19 AM, PST

Anyone who watched the Miss Universe pageant -- even just the trainwreck final minutes -- had to notice that Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez looks a lot like Sofía Vergara. Like, they could be twins. That led to some "Modern Family" jokes on Twitter, and some casting suggestions:

Will 'The Big Bang Theory' Season 10 Be 'the Ending Point'?

23 December 2015 7:50 AM, PST

They say all good things must come to an end, but there's no perfect equation for when you should end a good thing like "The Big Bang Theory." The CBS sitcom premiered in 2007 and is now in Season 9 as we head into 2016. It's still a ratings powerhouse -- it's the No. 1 comedy in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demo -- but in addition to the massive cast salaries, the latest episodes have hit several major milestones. Are they getting ready to say goodbye ... or just getting started? The Hollywood Reporter talked to the Powers That Be and it sounds like things could go either way.

THR asked showrunner Steve Molaro if producers were planning Season 10 as if it were the end of the line. Here's how he replied:

I think so. I can't speak to the future or on behalf of the cast or where we'll be then but it's certainly possible »

Kurt Russell Says Shooting 'Hateful Eight' Was Like 'Doing a Disney Movie'

23 December 2015 7:00 AM, PST

Two westerns in one year, both starring Kurt Russell?! So glad we live in such a golden age.

Earlier in the fall, Russell cowboy'd his way into the grizzly horror-western "Bone Tomahawk." Now, he's reuniting with his "Death Proof" director Quentin Tarantino for the hotly-anticipated "The Hateful Eight." In what plays out like a John Ford western by way of "Ten Little Indians," Russell stars as John "The Hangman" Ruth, an ill-tempered bounty hunter who, along with his bounty, finds himself in close quarters with some truly violent and untrusting folk.

Despite the film's excessive violence and gunplay, the former child star compared the shooting experience to, um, well, we'll let him explain:

"It's a bit like doing a Disney movie," Russell said. "[Doing] a Disney movie in the 60s -- It was a slightly different zeitgeist then. You're creating the bubble. The bubble can be this big or this small. »

'My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2' Poster Shows Greeks Don't Change

23 December 2015 7:00 AM, PST

"People change. Greeks don't." That's the message atop the first poster for "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2," and it lives up to its own mantra by recycling the basics of the 2002 movie poster for the 2016 sequel.

Star/writer Nia Vardalos tweeted the new movie poster this week, along with a little message about the returning cast:

Here's the poster for the original movie:

You see Nia's Toula and John Corbett's Ian over to the right in both posters, but in the new story their daughter joins them at center stage, since the sequel will focus -- in part -- on the teen's transition from high school to college.

'Pretty Little Liars' Boss Clarifies Report About End of Series

23 December 2015 6:20 AM, PST

"Pretty Little Liars" fans are still waiting to see the five-year time jump play out, when Season 6 returns on January 12, but creator I. Marlene King is now clarifying some quotes about the potential end of the series after Season 7.

Pll Season 6 and Season 7 were renewed together, and it's not clear if there will be a Season 8 or even a movie, but those ideas are on the table. However, when Marlene recently spoke with Variety, there was some confusion about what she meant by ending something at Season 7, so she took to Twitter to clarify.

First, here's that section of the Variety interview, which was headlined "'Pretty Little Liars' Will End After Season 7, Says Creator":

Now, with a revamped storyline on the horizon — the new episodes kick off the a five-year time jump, resulting in a more mature "Pretty Little Liars" world — King says she would like for Season 7 to be the last. »

Here's Why Bridget Jones Is So Much Thinner in 'Baby'

23 December 2015 6:01 AM, PST

Renée Zellweger can never seem to find the Goldilocks zone when it comes to her looks, at least to the general public. When she was first cast in "Bridget Jones's Diary," she was considered too thin to play Helen Fielding's (also British) character. In the sequel, there was talk that maybe she had gained too much weight. In the past year or so, there's been a lot of chatter about the actress's face not quite looking the same. And now the cast of "Bridget Jones's Baby" is on the cover of Entertainment Weekly, with a story explaining why Renee's Bridget is so skinny in the new movie, which comes out September 16, 2016.

Here's what director Sharon Maguire told Entertainment Weekly:

We all really loved the notion that Bridget, 15 years on, had finally reached her ideal weight ... somewhere between a UK size 10 or 12 ... but still hadn't solved any of her issues about love and loneliness. »

'Star Wars' Fan Arrested for Threatening to Shoot Friend Over Spoilers

22 December 2015 2:15 PM, PST

We all know people on social media who get a little overzealous about spoilers, threatening to unfriend or unfollow those who break the honor code of the internet. One Montana teen took things a bit too far, though, when he allegedly said he'd shoot his friend for revealing plot points from "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

The Associated Press reports that Arthur Charles Roy, of Helena, Montana, was charged with felony assault with a weapon on Monday following the incident. Here's the breakdown of Roy's alleged acts, according to the AP:

Roy, 18, became angry Thursday when he learned spoilers about "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" from a Facebook friend, prosecutors said.

Roy sent the friend a picture of himself with a gun and threatened to come to the victim's school to shoot him, court records said. Roy reportedly said the gun was a Colt 1911 with a "hair trigger."

Miss Universe Wants Steve Harvey to Host Again Next Year

22 December 2015 1:35 PM, PST

Despite making the biggest mistake you can make as an awards show emcee, Steve Harvey has a shot at redemption: The Miss Universe pageant wants him to return to host the show again in 2016.

Harvey, who made headlines the world over thanks to accidentally announcing the incorrect winner of the 2015 Miss Universe title (and letting the second runner-up don the crown and sash before the snafu was corrected), was the target of much mockery for his blunder. But according to pageant officials, it was an honest mistake -- and they "absolutely" want him to return to try the hosting gig again.

" ... [H]e did a great job. He was funny, he was informative, he's high energy, he's got a great following," said Mark Shapiro, an executive for Miss Universe owner Wme|Img, in an interview with The Jim Rome Show on Tuesday. "I definitely want him back, and I would hate »

Johnny Depp Is 2015's Most Overpaid Actor, According to Forbes

22 December 2015 12:40 PM, PST

Johnny Depp may have stored up lots of moviegoing goodwill thanks to his iconic work as Captain Jack Sparrow in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, but that sentiment didn't translate into box office dollars in 2015: Depp's inability to earn much money at the multiplex this year has earned him the dubious title of Hollywood's most overpaid actor.

Forbes put out its annual list of overpaid performers this week, and Depp's 2015 numbers are especially dismal (yes, even for the star of notorious flop "The Lone Ranger"): According to the magazine, Depp made only $1.20 for every $1 he was paid for films including "Mortdecai" and "Transcendence," which earned just $47 million and $100 million, respectively. (For comparison, Chris Evans returned $181.80 for every dollar he took home in 2015, making him Hollywood's best bargain, according to Forbes.)

While 2016 does look brighter for Depp (he has another "Pirates" flick on the horizon, as well as »

Critics' Choice Awards Add 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' to Best Picture Nominees

22 December 2015 11:40 AM, PST

The 2016 Critics' Choice Awards nominations may have come out more than a week ago, but that hasn't stopped "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" from nabbing a Best Picture nomination from the organization anyway.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association announced on Tuesday the unusual decision to award a late nomination to the flick, which opened on December 18, well after other nominees had screened for and been nominated by the organization. Nominations were originally announced on December 14, but the Bfca called an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss the possible last-minute inclusion of "The Force Awakens," and held a vote to determine whether or not to hand the film a nomination.

Results of the vote were not revealed, but the count was enough to make "The Force Awakens" the Critics' Choice Awards' 11th Best Picture nominee. All 10 previously-announced nominees will remain in contention.

Though it's certainly odd for a movie to nab »

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Crushes Monday Box Office Record With $40 Million

22 December 2015 9:45 AM, PST

Another day, another "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" box office record.

The movie earned $40.1 million in North America Monday, completely crushing the previous record of $27.7 million held by 2004's "Spider-Man 2." Analysts expected a big Monday for "The Force Awakens," as 70 percent of schools are on holiday.

The movie has now accumulated $610 million worldwide. It shattered several records with a boffo opening weekend: $248 million domestic debut and a $529 million global launch. Undoubtedly more records will fall, too: "The Force Awakens" should easily best the record held by "Jurassic World" for the fastest movie to cross the $300 million mark. The dinosaur sequel took eight days to reach that figure; "Star Wars" likely will only need five.

Box office experts also predict that "The Force Awakens" will join "Titanic" and "Avatar" as the only films to make more than $2 billion worldwide.

'Everybody Wants Some' Trailer Is the Spiritual Cousin of 'Dazed and Confused'

22 December 2015 9:30 AM, PST

Richard Linklater captured the essence of '70s-era high school life with the classic "Dazed and Confused." Now, he's turning his unique perspective onto '80s-era college life in "Everybody Wants Some," which has been dubbed the "spiritual sequel" to his earlier movie.

The first trailer definitely gives off the same relaxed, easygoing vibe. The movie follows college baseball players as they drink, smoke, party, and flirt their way through life. "This ain't high school man. You're at a new level here," one player tells newbie Jake Bradley (Blake Jenner).

"Everybody Wants Some" is essentially what a "Dazed and Confused" follow-up would be, if Linklater had followed those characters to college. You've got a lot of male camaraderie, the mood can best be described as "super chill," and there's pot smoking. Nobody could mistake this for anyone else's film but Linklater.

"Everybody Wants Some" premieres at SXSW in March, then »

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Salaries: Harrison Ford Reportedly Paid 76 Times More Than Daisy Ridley

22 December 2015 8:15 AM, PST

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is raking in the $$$ at the box office, but not all of its stars have the paycheck to reflect the windfall.

An initial report from the Daily Mail outlined the salaries of the major actors in "The Force Awakens."

Variety checked those figures and here's what sources told them:

Harrison Ford received an eight-figured paycheck ($10-20 million).

Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill made salaries in the low seven-figure range.

Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver got mid- to high-six figures (above $500,000).

Daisy Ridley and John Boyega earned something between $100,000-$300,000.

That would mean Ford possibly made a whopping 76 times more than Ridley and Boyega. Of course, Ford is a huge star, while the younger actors are relative newcomers. Plus, Disney and Lucasfilm opted to create a "legacy pay scale" for returning actors from the original "Star Wars" movies. And the storyline of "The Force Awakens" depended heavily on Han Solo's involvement. »

Jennifer Lawrence Is Team Gale, Kissed Liam Hemsworth in Real Life

22 December 2015 7:15 AM, PST

The Oscar winner confessed that she's Team Gale, in real life. In fact, she and co-star Hemsworth have kissed — off camera!

"Liam's real hot. What would you have done?" Lawrence laughed.

Cohen replied, "I mean, I pick Gale over Peeta any day."

"I did, at one point!" Lawrence said, adding that she planned to call Hemsworth at the commercial break.
