'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Shatters Opening Day Record

16 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has already put its stamp on the record books, kicking off its domestic release with an estimated $120.5 million Friday opening. That opening number includes a record-breaking $57 million from Thursday night "previews" and makes this the first film to gross more than $100 million in a "single" day, but the records don't stop there. The $120.5 million opening day for Star Wars marks the largest Friday, opening day and single day records previously held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 at $91 million. In just its opening day, the film has also broken the previous December opening weekend and single day records, both of which were held by The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The Hobbit's previous December opening weekend record was $84.62 million and the single day record was a paltry $37.13 million, which puts into context just how big this opening really is. Now the question comes »

‘Star Wars’ Explodes at Global Box Office With $250 Million

15 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is on the verge of sending the foreign and worldwide box office records set by the dinosaurs of “Jurassic World” last summer into extinction. The J.J. Abrams-directed space epic has taken in $129 million from abroad since it began rolling out Wednesday, distributor Disney reported Saturday. That puts it within striking distance of the international opening weekend record of $316.1 million and the record for a worldwide — that is foreign and domestic grosses combined — opening weekend of $524.9 million within range.  “The Force Awakens” brought in a record $120 million-plus in its first day at the North American. »

Cinemax Orders a Premiere Script and Outline for The Knick’s Third Season

14 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Warning: This post discusses the events of last night's episode of The Knick, so tread carefully. Variety reports that Cinemax has ordered a premiere script and season outline for the third season of its early-20th-century hospital drama The Knick, which may come as a surprise to some viewers as last night's episode ended with the death of series lead Doctor Thackery (Clive Owen). Variety's report, however, doesn't imply that Cinemax is going to mimic any of that Jon Snow business. Owen told Variety that he only planned to do two seasons of the show, so Thackery will probably stay dead. And while the series itself was initially built for a two-year arc, according to a statement from Cinemax, all-star director Steven Soderbergh and creators Michael Begler and Jack Amiel have been discussing ways to continue the story. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Amiel went into more detail »

Why 'The Revenant' Was Not Eligible to Compete for the Oscar for Original Score

12 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Music Branch has deemed 112 scores eligible to compete for nominations in the Original Score category for the 88th Academy Awards. As expected, Ryuichi Sakamoto's score for "The Revenant" did not fit their criteria (they couldn't separate out his contributions from his two collaborators), and filmmaker A.G. Inarritu is not happy about it. (Fox is appealing the ruling.) The race for the gold statue is probably between two master Oscar perennials, Ennio Morricone, returning to the western genre after 40 years to write Quentin Tarantino's first original score ("The Hateful Eight") and 83-year-old John Williams, who has scored all the "Star Wars" films including the seventh, "The Force Awakens." He has won five Oscars (including "Star Wars") and will surely land his 50th Oscar nomination for this one (he already holds the record as the most nominated person ever). Amy Poehler and Tina Fey Host a Smashing ‘Saturday Night Live’

35 minutes ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler strolled on to the “Saturday Night Live” stage this weekend as if they owned the place. Given how good their installment of “SNL” was, it’d be nice if they actually did — if not now, maybe some day down the road. They’re not just naturals at all things “SNL,” they’re a ridiculous amount of fun to watch together.

Political jabs, a revival of their Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton impressions and a pointed (if brief) dig at Bill Cosby were among the Dec. 19 highlights, as were visits from pals like Amy Schumer and Maya Rudolph. It’s hard to think of any 2015 TV moment that was more joyous than watching Fey, Poehler, musical guest Bruce Springsteen, plus Paul McCartney, the cast of the show and the E Street Band singing “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” just before the credits rolled. Air France Flight Forced to Land in Kenya Over Bomb Scare

50 minutes ago | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Nairobi, Kenya (AP) — An Air France flight from Mauritius to Paris was forced to land in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa after a device suspected to be a bomb was found in the lavatory, a Kenyan police official said Sunday. The Boeing 777 Air France flight 463 was heading to Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris when the pilots requested an emergency landing at the Moi International Airport at 12:37 a.m., police spokesman Charles Owino said. "It requested an emergency landing when a device suspected to be an explosive was discovered in the lavatory," Owino said.

Tina Fey, Amy Poehler Host ‘SNL': Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney Welcome ‘Sisters’ Stars Back to Studio 8H

1 hour ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

In a season marked by alumni cameos at the tops of the episodes, it made sense for “Saturday Night Live” to double down for their mid-season finale with cast members (and “Sisters” co-stars) Tina Fey and Amy Poehler returning to the stage. Dorky “SNL” superfan trivia fact: Fey is now tied with Bill Murray for second place in regards to the number of hosting stints by returning cast members. They both have five under their belts, while Chevy Chase is the reigning alumni champ with eight hosting stints. Okay, we’ve established that expectations were high, so how’d they do? »

'SNL' Spoofs Trump, Candidates in Gop Debate Sketch

2 hours ago | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Minutes after Saturday’s Democratic debate ended, viewers found themselves tuning in once again to Tuesday’s Gop debate on Saturday Night Live. SNL alum Darrell Hammond returned to Studio 8H to play Donald Trump as the nine candidates resumed their podiums before CNN moderator Wolf Blitzer (Jon Rudnitsky) for the sketch. “The results are in and everybody lost,” he says, only introducing the five “who actually have a chance”: Trump, Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, Marco Rubio and “poor, sweet Jeb Bush.” Adding, “The rest of you just wave so your parents know you’re here.” Taking center stage, Hammond

Tina Fey, Amy Poheler Open ‘Saturday Night Live’ Under Own Steam

2 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

For the first time in recent weeks, “Saturday Night Live” relied on its own cast and hosts to open a show, rather than surprise cameos.

Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler reprised their old impressions of Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton, respectively, in a program that made the most of the cast and avoided what has been a recurring technique in recent weeks, when “surprise” guest stars have boosted the show’s opening moments. Just last week, Will Ferrell, an alumni of the program like Fey and Poheler, turned up in the show’s opening moments to revive his famous impression of George W. Bush. In the week prior, Michael Meyers, another famous former cast member, made an appearance during the host’s monologue.

The show’s “cold open” this week made fun of the recent Republican debate televised by CNN, with veteran Darrell Hammond, a former cast member, coming »

Rey is exactly the ‘Star Wars’ character we’ve been looking for — and now we’re complaining about her

3 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Rejoice! Rey is everything we wanted in a “Star Wars” female character. She’s front and center (just look at that poster!), she’s independent, skilled, scrappy, tough and doesn’t need saving. Princess Leia is far from a total damsel in distress, but this franchise was still missing someone like Rey. In case you haven’t figured it out by now, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” spoilers lie ahead. She pilots the Millennium Falcon! She wields a lightsaber!!! Someone other than a dude touches a lightsaber — not only touches it but dominates at fighting with the elegant weapon. Yes, we got to see some women using lightsabers in the Battle of Geonosis in “Attack of the Clones” — including Shaak Ti, who went on to appear in the animated series “Clone Wars” — but in that battle, they were a few women among 200 Jedi, and they were tertiary characters. Bernie Sanders Apologizes to Hillary Clinton and 6 Other Takeaways From Democratic Debate

3 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Bernie Sanders apologized to Hillary Clinton in the third Democratic debate in New Hampshire on Saturday, after his aides improperly accessed proprietary voter lists created by Clinton’s presidential campaign. “Yes, I apologize,” the Vermont senator said when asked whether Clinton was owed an apology. “Not only do I want to apologize, I want to apologize to my supporters. This is not the kind of campaign that we run. If I find anyone else involved in this, they will be fired.” Sanders’ comments came after a glitch in the Democratic party voter database allowed for Sanders’ staffers to access Clinton’s private files. »

Democratic Debate: Clinton Says Trump Is "Becoming Isis’ Biggest Recruiter"

4 hours ago | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

During the third Democratic debate and the last of 2015, the presidential candidates wasted no time addressing Donald Trump. Hillary Clinton condemned Trump’s proposal to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. on Saturday night, saying Trump is sending a "discriminatory message" and "becoming Isis’ biggest recruiter." Adding, "They are going to people showing videos of Donald Trump insulting Islam and Muslims in order to recruit more radical jihadists." (Clinton did not offer specific evidence on the claim.) "Mr. Trump has a great capacity to use bluster and bigotry to inflame people, and to make them think

Ash vs. Evil Dead Recap: Back to the Cabin

4 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

It’s a nice little coincidence this weekend features two momentous returns from beloved movie franchises. Just as there are many people giddily watching The Force Awakens who long hoped to watch the Millenium Falcon fly on screen again but never knew if it would actually happen, I know there are some die hard Evil Dead fans – myself included – who always dreamed we might see Bruce Campbell return to the cabin for another round with the Deadites in the cellar, but with each passing year grew more and more certain it was never going to be.Well, tonight’s the night 34 years of cult devotion finally pays off and Ash returns to where his journey began. “Honey, I’m home.” As Ash gears up and enters the cabin, ready to end this thing once and for all, he finds himself in a clearing littered with dead (and undead) animals. Tina Fey Dodges ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ Racism Controversy: ‘I’m Opting Out’

Tina Fey is well aware of the charges of racism lobbed against her Netflix series “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” but she won’t be engaging in or commenting on it. In fact, she’s steering clear of what she calls the “culture of demanding apologies” on the internet altogether in a new interview with Net-a-Porter. “We did an ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ episode and the internet was in a whirlwind, calling it racist, but my new goal is not to explain jokes,” she said. How ‘Son of Saul’ Director Feels He Succeeded Where Other Holocaust Movies Have Failed

Not surprisingly, László Nemes’ wrenching “Son of Saul” was recently nominated for a Golden Globe award and shortlisted for the Oscars, as well as landing on most film critics’ best-of lists. Ever since the film won the Grand Prix at Cannes in May, its young director has been rightly praised for this brilliant and realistic portrayal of survival in Auschwitz in 1944. Nemes was recently in Washington, D.C. presenting his masterpiece. He explained how he started making the film “10 years ago when he was just 28 years old.” Nemes explains his purpose to “make one face visible for the public.” He. »
