Light L16 packs 16 cameras into a single portable body

US-based startup Light has officially introduced its L16, a portable device packed with 16 individual cameras, ten of which capture an image at the same time at different fixed focal lengths. The resulting photograph is a composite of all the individual images combined, with a final resolution of up to 52 megapixels. An earlier prototype of this camera was shown off this past April.

L16 is, according to Light, a portable camera that offers excellent low-light performance and DSLR-like image quality. The camera features a 5" touch display on the rear, equivalent focal lengths between 35mm and 150mm, 4K video recording, and depth-mapping technology to adjust a photo's depth of field and focus after it has been captured. Other known features include an IP54 water and dust resistance, support for a standard 1/4"-20 tripod mount, integrated GPS and an accelerometer, Wi-Fi, HDR capture, and a dual-tone LED flash.

The company has not released the full list of specifications at this time; according to its website, some details are still being determined and the final specs won't be released until Spring 2016. Those interested can reserve an L16 unit via Light's website for a discounted rate of $1,299; a total of $199 must be paid to reserve the unit. Starting November 6, the price will increase to its full $1,699 retail rate. Those who reserve the camera ahead of time will pay the full amount in Summer 2016. For now, Light can only ship in the US but plans to add international sales in the near future. The L16 will go on sale in September 2016.

While I think the camera is intriguing and I like the idea of the portability of such [theoretical] image quality, I always thought that this form factor made people look like jackasses. "Oh there goes the average everyday consumer holding up their smartphone trying to take a cheap smartphone picture again." I can't imagine how derpy I'd look out on the field with one of of these. I get enough flak with my LX100.

This is not truly new technology. I have a Fuji W3 stereo camera with two lens/sensors similar to Light L16 that are right angle and I can take two separate pictures with different focal lengths. The sensor size on the L16 MUST be small. If it used a large sensor like a 1" the lenses would have to be the same size as DSLR lenses. So they are probably using 1/4 or 1/3 inch sensors. I would suspect that most zoom is digital. If it was optical then they could have more like a 30:1 zoom ratio like my camcorder. The focal length is limited because of size constraints and cost. Wish I knew the f values of the camera. I have a little Samsung that goes 21-400mm at f2.8. Change the focal point after the fact? Try a Lytro! Lots cheaper. So far I don't see any real advantage to this camera but it would be fun to play with. No new technology but an interesting melding of several others. Finally, I have a DSLR because I hate rear screens as viewfinders and waiting for computers.

It would be interesting to know the total size of all the sensors and then the sum of each sensor times the solid angle of the associated lens to get the total etendue in say mm sq sterradians. Then that could be compared with particular single sensor/lens examples to compare optical throughput. The element that is extra is the potential extraction of distance from two or more lens/sensors set apart, that is, the stereoscopic resolution. If you print or display in 3D then you will need two or more, preferably many sensors set apart. The L16 is on the path to machine vision that can measure distance for autonomous vehicles and precise micro surgery. It's already headed in some version to the cell phone. Pretty cool.

If it's too good to be true, it probably isn't. How can Light establish a selling price for the L16 but not publish specs to correspond? Odd.

The real measure of success for this camera is whether it will beat the image quality and imaging versatility of a zoom lens of the same cost mounted on an enthusiast level camera body.

If it does, and you are not already invested in a DSLR or mirrorless system, then why wouldn't you buy this camera for $1300 instead of a camera body lens combo for $2000 or more to get a system that weights 5x as much, is 10x as bulky and doesn't image as well?

For many enthusiasts, having a single system like this might be enough to take care of their photography needs. Then you upgrade with each generation.

Of course, if image quality doesn't at least match or beat something like a Nikon 24-120 mounted on a D610, then the above reasoning goes out the window.

yep, video explains it much better. not really new technology, but ok.. on the end, it's still much smaller sensor, that captures image, even if there are 16 of them, that combines image (these does helps with reduce noise and all that) it's still not very usable for professional use. take a look at their image gallery, its all scaled down etc, no full resolution, smudged etc. it's ok for web and documentary use (well, that's most of the market today, sadly).
and one other bad thing imo: image is captured by mirror first, and then light goes to the lense/sensor assembly. it daoes make camera thinner, but it's bad for quality, which you're loosing on the mirror, specially on such small ones. but could be future, who knows. oh yes: there are 3 different focal distances which are used while zooming, if somebody was wondering

Mirrors can be as good or as bad as you want (and how much you are willing to pay), just like lenses. In astronomy mirrors are used extensively, so there is no reason to presume quality loss beforehand because of mirror use.

I dont need to to know that a 1inch sensor will NOT deliver DSLR image quality. Just like I know fire is hot, Ice is cold and water is wet, you can NOT claim something that is against the laws of physics.

Do they use 1-inch sensors in the L16!? RX100 I-IV all use 1-inch sensors and are capable of impressive IQ. So, composites created from ten 1-inch sensors would most likely have incredible IQ and workability.

With the set up the image quality should be similar to a single sensor with the combined area of the 10 sensors they are using for each composition. Maybe a little better or a littler worse, depending on the situation and the optimization.

This looks/sounds interesting although I'm not really impressed with the gallery given the price point of the product. Some of those shots look like they came from an iPhone. They also could have at least took out the CA in the tree shot.

With that said, it's exciting to see what mobile phone companies can do with this technology if they're able to get their hands on it.

I doubt any consumer would ever buy this. But I doubt they'll ever make something to mass-market to consumers. I'm sure they hope some large company buys them out and purchases their technology.

This camera is very futuristic. A flat panel form factor, no bulky lenses, high resolution, high dynamic range. The camera may be expensive but it only break my bank once. I don't have to invest so many lenses for it and I can bring it all the time and all day long. The form factor could be designed as a extremely waterproof camera in the future model. But the front of the camera look insane.

I'm pretty sure the endgame here is not to create a camera lineup, but to sell the IP to a phone manufacturer such as Apple. I think that's why they are deliberate in the way this thing looks and is marketed.

Sort of like the dot com boom in the 1990s, where the exit strategy was to go IPO and cash out, the idea with a lot of these tech startups is to cash out by being sold to an Apple, Google, etc.

Interesting concept, but it'll face the same problems as most other "normal" cameras. Competition from cellphone cameras. The "just good enough" attitude of most people means they'll just use their cellphones instead of shelling out +$1000 for a dedicated device for photos. For those times when they want to do "serious" photography, they'll dig out the budget $400 DSLR. It'll be a niche product for a very small audience.

Was reading about this L16 on a German Mainstraem Website and have had the very same ideas. Not just because it looks like a smart phone... And then there is another thing: The handling when zooming, the relatively small options to influence when creating the photo. Its too far into the future, at least for me and I will rather stick to my D800i's despite their weight and all the hassle involved ;-) The price of +/- 1600 USD.... is a Sony 7II and this has a Carl Zeiss Planar...

It's a very interesting concept. I'm not sure why so many people seem to think that they to know the problems with it a year before they get to see the finished product.

The prototype sample images show a lot of promise and the technology itself is sound.

I'm old enough to remember people trying to discredit the potential of digital sensors. I actually think that digital camera technology worked out OK.

it will not work, this technology would be more exiting if cameras did not have screens to look at pictures after you take them.
eventually it will end up like the Lytro cameras.

this technology is good for specific uses when a human is not holding the camera like security cameras etc.

what i'm saying is that since today's cameras have LCD and we see pictures after we take them, we don't need all those zoom and focus options after taking the pictures. because we see on the LCD right away if we made any mistake and we just shoot another picture.

that new technology is usable in situation when we don't have an LCD on the camera and can't look at the picture right after we take it like security cameras.

I think this camera is good mostly to people who don't know how to shoot with a camera, how to press shutter button half way to get focus (they push half way, lift their finger and then push hard all way to get unfocused blurry picture, how to use zoom key, neither how to use Photoshop, they just point and shoot and then adjust the picture to how they like it to look like.

people like us don't need that camera because we just use the zoom button to the focal length we want, use the shutter half way to adjust the focus and shoot a great picture.

If I explained it good this time, please give me a like, i'm so humiliated.

Its unknown whether this matches 1" or APSC sensor. If its the latter there is a significant size difference between this and a larger camera with an even larger zoom lens.

This camera allows you to shift the focus after the fact. With an LCD screen, you're able to view the picture immediately and see if you focused properly or not, so you don't need to fix it after the fact.

The cost of calibration between camera modules will be extremely high.

Having working on 3-panel projector, I know how difficult to align high resolution panels to achieve un-noticeable artifacts. That was 3 panels sharing with the same lens. L16 will fuse the images from 10 cameras each having its own lens. It is not possible to have exactly the same magnification between two cameras within the resolution of the pixel size, not to mention they are purposely focused at different focal distance. Each camera module has to have identical focal length, distortion, aberration, etc. From its website, L16 offers optical zoom. There is no way to get all 10 camera modules to change to identical optical zoom due to mechanical tolerances.

If they have to calibrate every L16 with software compensation for all conditions (all temperatures, all optical zoom, all colors, all intensity level), the cost will be way too high.

I would say the product will be extremely expensive.

The calibration you talk about is not really relevant for this (at least not at the level you are talking about). The images can be pretty easy aligned in software, at the processing step. The only downside is that it is pretty CPU intensive, but that's probably what they are going after. In PS you can just stitch handhold shot images, and combine them to increase resolution/decrease noise, or even decrease FOV ... there are other comments below who explain a lot of those...

Alignment of images has to be handled with software. To have 16 lenses mechanically aligned all the time, you'd need a to have a service technician with you at all times. I would assume the approach is similar to what HDR programs do.

I know people think software can fix many artifacts. But, if each camera module has magnification off 0.1% (optical zoom), this is one pixel error. The analogy of PS is inadequate because, in that case, the pictures are taken using the same lens. If you try to merge two pictures taken with slightly positions (i.e. handheld), only the best state-of-art software with fast processors can handle well the combining multiple pictures such as HDR or panorama. Besides, it will be computing extensive which will drain battery power.

When I said expensive, I meant >$3000. It is like to put Intel i7 processor into a smart phone form factor.

None of these cameras are zooming. They are all fixed on a high precision rigid frame.

The software interpolates between images captured at 3 different focal lengths to achieve zooming.

For alignment, computing power is an issue with a general CPU. It might be a none issue with a more customized silicon or even an algorithm adapted to an off the shelf vector processing chip.

infosky, i don't mean to contradict... but i merge (HDR or panorama) on a 7 years old CPU, and it manages 10-20 x 16MPx images in just a few minutes, with only 4GB RAM ...

Also to understand what physguy said, think on how much time it takes a PC to extract a RAW vs how fast it is done in camera (when you shoot JPEG only).

Probably the full raw (the one with additional depth info and so on) have to be proprietary, but if they make an option to export to DNG after some tweaking in their app, and continue the work in your favorite RAW exporter, it would be acceptable.

Yeah I get that it's part of the whole crowd funding deal. Intriguing concept, I think the strategy of "ditch the camera" is not necessarily the right way to go - those of us who shoot events, sport, fashion, products, head shots, action aren't really going to be interested. Connectivity will be a huge issue - for my kids aged 14 to 20, the key advantage of the smartphone is good enough image which you can share on 7 forms of social media almost immediately. But certainly creative, good luck to them, and my feeling is they will make good $ selling the tech to Apple/Samsung/Sony for partial implementation through phones.

Camera's used to collect pictures. Now it is more obvious that they collect data. Quantity and an accurate description of the actual bits is more important than how much it looks like a picture in the raw. That can be fixed later.
I suppose it is the logical progression of where photo processing software can take us. Maybe back to pinhole cameras one day...... multiple pinholes ? .....

When Lytro launched I was excited, but things that never quite panned out for Lytro was the need for the gallery on their website, low resolution, etc.

This device packs much more promise, but may not go far enough. Honestly if the device takes great photos, it would be worth the $1700(final retail) or $1300 intro price. Heck I paid $3200 for my first 5D body years ago, then $2800 for a Mk II.

What it needs for me to look seriously at it though would be: Changeable battery, removable memory/storage MicroSD or such, hotshoe for a strobe/flash with ETTL/manual settings

Let's hope it will live up to it's promise. But at that price tag it will be attractive only to people who really know about photography, so it makes perfect sense to include reasonable features that will allow one to work with it.

The images from the different camera modules are combined to give you one final image. This is what allows the user to change DoF and focus after the fact, and probably makes possible lots of other feats of computational wizardry.

Never been the kind who goes all-out shouting 'this is the future of photography' every time a technical innovation is announced, but this looks promising. From the specs I can only point out the lack of both wide-angle and long telephoto focal lengths as an issue, but I suppose that would be unfeasible with such a small package.
And I guess some day one will have to learn to live without a viewfinder of any kind... oh well.
Still I don't predict a bright future for this camera. The technology may be adopted in the future, but iPhonographers will shudder at the idea of carrying another similar-sized volume (it could break their fragile backs), and gearheads won't even look at it.

I so want this to work but taking a look at the gallery images left me disappointed. They are all noisy/grainy and there is no detail when you zoom in. I can't see actual eyelashes, for example, on any of the portrait subjects. It looks like someone just stitched together 4 or 5 crappy cell phone pics.

$1300 is a joke. People would basically have to carry around something the size of a large smart phone that isn't a phone. And they'd be taking 15 times too many photos. Because in the end there's only one best photo.

Revenant, that is correct, and that is why, when you are into a new and clever technology you are planning to sell in low volumes and at high prices , you just have to make sure it will hit hard on the niche you are aiming.

Let's hope this will do, because i like the idea, but based on what they have on their site as "proof" and add to the fact that they make "preorders" at this point, before they even finished their specs ... let's just say that i have my doubts.

@Red. Each of the 10 modules activated take the same photo and then the camera combines that into a single shot which ends up being that one best photo you mentioned.

From their patent application it seems like the optical axes of the sensors with a larger focal length (smaller field of view) are rotated by internal mirrors so that they become non-parallel to the optical axis of the sensor with a wide field of view. This allows to point multiple sensors to slightly overlapping parts of the wider scene and then stitch a larger image from several smaller images. In the application there is an example of stitching a 52 Megapixel image from several 8 megapixel images.

Cool to see them approaching resolution, size, and DR from a different perspective, but I can't see this being adopted by many 'serious' photographers. No way to add a polarizer or other filter? No way to add a flash? Nothing wider than 35mm (using a 'pano mode' would just waste all of that MP resolution by having to move the camera)? Likewise, so many MP are just wasted in a primarily hand-held device. I don't envision many people bringing along a tripod if the goal is having a pocketable device. No viewfinder for outdoor use in bright sun? For those for whom this could be a useful device, I think the price is just too great. Hope they figure it out and can remain viable as a company to keep working on this.

It has potential - perhaps it is what Lytro should have been but missed. The image quality seems good as well.

However, 50Mp of file size doesn't necessarily mean it's resolving any more detail than a M43 or even a 2/3 sensor.

I really like the idea of the concept, but it feels like a smartphone, minus the phone. Why not develop it into a more robust camera design with dials and extensive controls, possibly even an EVF that shows what the main LCD screen shows? All of that potential is really going to waste if the camera is just going to be a very expensive smartphone camera.

It will not replace DSLRs or mirror-less system cameras.
If Apple, Google or Facebook will pick it, they will have a good chance for a smartphones.

They use so-called "folded optics". Prisms/mirrors redirect the light 90 degrees so that additional lenses can take up space in a more pocket-friendly axis. Like the old Sony point & shoots with the periscope zooms.
