NEW: my first piece with , on the misleading debate on preemptive strike -

  2. Nice piece, and a note: the NIS (RoK's intel agency) has lots of trouble in this department too, frequently mis-IDing purged individuals

My Vinson CSG hangups: 1 PACOM garbled initial msg 2 WH spox made it worse 3 Reporters didn't do the hmwrk on tm/dist frm Sing to Korea.

As far as I know we would also be crossing a rubicon: the first US shots in anger against North Korea since 1953

Impossible to say how Kim would react, however. And the downside of a miss would be a huge psychological blow to US BMD efforts

  7. I'm inclined to think that this would be a poor idea unless a test directly threatens an ally. If so, then by all means

  8. Still a remarkable story. That NBC report was threatening a pre-emptive strike from an invisible aircraft carrier and destroyers.

  9. Oops, meant to type the Vinson here. Nimitz nowhere near WESTPAC either though.

-U.S. negotiations rather than DPRK-US negotiations. An attempt to brandish nonexistent ships to create a dialogue. I'm floored.

Again, fallout from that inane NBC report. Nobody is attacking anybody right now. Modifying my earlier hypothesis tho - looks more like PRC

Reagan is undergoing maintenance at Yokosuka. Nimitz is in SoCal preparing for deployment. They are certainly not having a party in WESTPAC.

And I don't wanna hear anything about a massing of CVNs in the Sea of Japan. Ain't happening. The reports otherwise are utterly risible.

  14. Apr 17

How is this not a bigger story? The Nimitz is still nowhere near the Korean peninsula and won't be for a week

  15. Apr 17

Thread! Now question is whether DPRK has reasonable over-the-horizon ISR capabilities for tracking a CVN. Now they've got both ASBM and ASCM

An amazing reminder by of late Fred Halliday's forecast of long term outcome of 2003 Iraq invasion. He was a superb scholar

Usual take: China says it complies while rule breaking in practice. Scarborough: China says ruling invalid while complying in practice.

Great discussion of how China can't employ a fait accompli in Scarborough like it did in Spratlys. Great piece from
