The Buzz: We left the theater smiling after a Comic-Con screening of M. Night Shyamalan's low-budget/high-return mystery. Or is it a campy thriller? Really, it's both. Shyamalan seemed to be enjoying the return to his filmmaking roots, and we have to say we think the story's twist is sublime. Furthermore, it makes real world sense, so we're excited to see how audiences respond to his mea culpa.
The Perfect Guy (2015)
After breaking up with her boyfriend, a professional woman gets involved with a man who seems almost too good to be true.
Director:David M. Rosenthal |

The Buzz: We've encountered this movie scenario time and time again, so the only questions we have are: how will Sanaa Lathan ultimately dispose of Michael Ealy, and can we hope for any kind of plot twist?
90 Minutes in Heaven (2015)
A man involved in a horrific car crash is pronounced dead, only to come back to life an hour and a half later, claiming to have seen Heaven.
Director:Michael Polish |

The Buzz: Michael Polish taking them helm of a Faith-based movie makes sense to us since the world of Christian film production is one of the most successful non-Hollywood-based businesses, and Polish has made a stack of decidedly independent films with his brother, Mark. We're interested to see the movie's screen count for opening weekend; it could easily find itself in the top 10.
Gui lai (2014) - [Limited]
Lu and Feng are a devoted couple forced to separate when Lu is arrested and sent to a labor camp as a political prisoner during the Cultural Revolution. He finally returns home only to find that his beloved wife no longer remembers him.
Director:Yimou Zhang |

The Buzz: Zhang Yimou and Gong Li's newest collaboration has been described as their most traditional picture yet. At Cannes, some critics meant this as a compliment; others politely dismissed it and moved on as the film screened outside of competition. Chinese audiences weren't particularly moved by the story either. Yimou wasted no time mounting his next project, The Great Wall, which stars a ponytailed Matt Damon and puts a sci-fi spin on the reason why the Wall went up.
Wolf Totem (2015) - [Limited]
During China's Cultural Revolution, a young urban student is sent to live with Mongolian herders, where he adopts a wolf cub.
Director:Jean-Jacques Annaud |

The Buzz: Jean-Jacques Annaud's new film, which is based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Lu Jiami, is expected to be China's submission for this year's foreign language Academy Award. Already certified a blockbuster in China earlier this year, it took seven years to make Wolf Totem. Part of the reason? The production required two packs of wolves to be trained for use in the film.
Sleeping with Other People (2015) - [Limited]
A good-natured womanizer and a serial cheater form a platonic relationship that helps reform them in ways, while a mutual attraction sets in.
Director:Leslye Headland |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Bachelorette director Leslye Headland returns with another comedy that seems likely to polarize viewers with its crass, realistic humor. We certainly love these two leads; we'd also love to see Headland write a story that instantly seems original and set in uncharted interpersonal territory.
Time Out of Mind (2014) - [Limited]- Drama
George seeks refuge at Bellevue Hospital, a Manhattan intake center for homeless men, where his friendship with a fellow client helps him try to repair his relationship with his estranged daughter.
Director:Oren Moverman |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Oren Moverman's body of work (Rampart and The Messenger are both his movies) has dealt with men in crisis, and Time Out of Mind represents his artiest approach to narrative filmmaking thus far. Richard Gere has received strong reviews for his performance, but Moverman's techniques have been criticized by some for getting in the way of telling an effective story. We tend to be attracted to movies that get mixed reviews; in truth, this one might have flown under our radar otherwise.
Ich seh, Ich seh (2014) - [Limited]
Twin boys move to a new home with their mother after she has face changing cosmetic surgery, but under her bandages is someone the children don't recognize.
