High ISO Compared: Sony A7S vs. A7R vs. Canon EOS 5D III

The A7S is Sony's newest entry in its full-frame mirrorless lineup. But where the 'R' in A7R stood for resolution, the 'S' in the 12MP A7S stands for sensitivity. We've recently received a Sony A7S and wasted no time putting it up against the A7R and Canon EOS 5D Mark III to see how it compares.

Studio Test Scene
59

We've worked hard over the last few months to develop a new test scene and a protocol for shooting it and processing the results. The underlying idea is to give a clearer idea of how a camera will perform in the real world - not just an idealized setting.

Canon EOS 70D review gains test scene samples

We're working towards completing our review of the Canon EOS 70D and have been shooting our test scene with a production camera. We've published the test shots, including downloadable Raw files of both the daylight and low light scene. The EOS 70D review will also be one of the few chances to see our outgoing test scene and our new, more challenging, more informative scene alongside one another. Click through to see how it performs.

New test scene beta begins with Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7 samples

We've been working on a brand-new studio comparison scene for some time, and we've decided to give you a sneak peek, using images from the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7. We'll be speaking more about this new scene (and the new interface that goes with it) very soon, but for now we wanted to let you have a look, try it, play around and tell us what you think. As well as the new scene, you'll find two new options - 'daylight' and 'low light' simulation modes and the option to 'normalize' resolution to simulate print and web output, as well as 100%. Click through for more.

Dynamic range and Noise pages added to Sony RX1R Preview

We're working on Sony's flagship compact camera, the 24MP RX1R, and as part of our usual testing we've updated our preview with noise and noise-reduction analysis, and our standard page looking at dynamic range. This is in addition to our studio comparison scene pages, and a real-world samples gallery showing just what the RX1R - which lacks an AA filter - can do. Click through for a link to our updated preview.

Studio scene comparison pages added to Pentax MX-1 preview

We've just added three studio comparison pages to our previously-published preview of the Pentax MX-1. Click through to go to the new pages in our preview, and see for yourself how the MX-1 compares to its rivals.

Fujifilm X-series studio comparisons updated with new ACR 7.4 raw process

Following the recent public release of Adobe Camera Raw 7.4, we've updated our studio comparison database with new raw conversions of files from the Fujifilm X-Pro 1, X-E1 and X100S. We've been using the release candidate version of ACR 7.4 for some time, which contained significant improvements to Adobe's treatment of files from Fujifilm's X-Trans sensors. The official public release version of ACR 7.4 brings some further (very minor) tweaks. Click through for links to the studio comparison pages in our X-Pro 1 and X-E1 reviews, and X100S preview, now with ACR 7.4 raw conversions.

Just Posted: Pentax K-5 II and K-5 IIs studio test images

Just Posted: Studio test images from the Pentax K-5 II and its low-pass-filter-free sister model, the K-5 IIs. We've shot studio test samples with Pentax's latest 16MP DSLRs. Not only does this mean you can see the differences between the K-5 II and the 's' variant but it allows you to compare them with the original K-5 or almost every camera we've tested in recent years. It also means you can download the Raw files from either camera to process to your own tastes.

Just Posted: Canon PowerShot G15 studio sample images

Just Posted: Studio test samples from the Canon PowerShot G15. Although closely resembling the existing G-series cameras, the G15 is slightly smaller and features a faster lens than its predecessor. It also gains the latest version of Canon's 12MP 1/1.7"-type CMOS sensor - promising what should be a significant performance improvement over the now rather dated 10MP CCD in its predecessor, the G12. What difference does that sensor make? Have a look at our studio test images to find out.

Nikon Coolpix P7700 Preview Updated with Studio Comparison Images

Updated: We've just added the Nikon Coolpix P7700 to our studio comparison database, and we've taken the opportunity to add three image quallity comparison pages to our previously-published preview. Our final analysis of the P7700's image quality will come later, but for now, you can use our comparison tool to see how Nikon's newest enthusiast compact camera measures up to its competitors in both JPEG and Raw mode. Does the new 12MP BSI-CMOS sensor and revamped lens combination make a difference? Click through to find out.

Just Posted: Studio test samples and analysis of the Pentax K-30. We're working on a full review of Pentax's K-30 mid-level DSLR and will be posting content as it's completed, building up the review progressively over the coming weeks. The first part of this process is the addition of our standard studio test images to the K-30 preview. As usual this means the images are accessible from other reviews and the standalone comparison tool, and Raw files are available for download.

Fujifilm X-Pro1 studio samples published, including Adobe Camera Raw conversions

We've just been given access to a beta version of Adobe Camera Raw that supports the Fujifilm X-Pro1 and have used it to process our standard test scene. The good news is that it produces similar resolution to the camera's JPEG output and that it appears to recognize the selected dynamic range extension setting. The X-Pro1 is not a camera with obvious peers, so we've presented it alongside a mixture of DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. These are just our suggested comparisons - you are able (and encouraged) to choose your own. (Samples updated)
