ALPSP works in collaboration with the Publishers Licensing Society (PLS) on behalf of our members. PLS is a not-for-profit organization owned by the Association for Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP), the Independent Publishers Guild (IPG), the Publishers Association (PA) and the Professional Publishers Association (PPA).
PLS provides collective licensing and rights management services to the publishing industry. Their primary remit is to oversee collective licensing in the UK for book, journal, magazine, and website copying.
What is collective licensing?
Collective licensing offers a simple and cost effective solution both for those who wish to copy from books without breaking the law, and for rightsholders where direct licensing would be inefficient and unduly burdensome.
A blanket licence allows users to copy from a broad range of titles in return for a licence fee, so providing convenience and excellent value for money. The licence fee is then paid to the rightsholders whose books have been shown to have been copied.
