11 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The 21st Annual Critics’ Choice Awards announced nominations for the combined 2016 ceremony on Monday and Warner Bros.’ “Mad Max: Fury Road” paced the film race with 13 nominations, while FX’s “Fargo” led TV series noms with eight.

Weinstein Co.’s “Carol,” and two big Fox pics, “The Martian” and “The Revenant,” scored nine noms apiece in voting by the Broadcast Film Critics Assn.

Open Road’s “Spotlight” tallied eight; Paramount’s “The Big Short,” seven; TWC’s “The Hateful Eight,” six; Disney-DreamWorks’ “Bridge of Spies,” Fox Searchlight’s “Brooklyn,” Focus Features’ “The Danish Girl,” Universal’s “Jurassic World,” and Lionsgate’s “Sicario” each earned five; and A24’s “Room” nabbed four.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association is returning to the Critics’ Choice name after splitting the awards into two ceremonies in 2010, and adding movie and TV to the shows’ titles.

The Black List Unveils the Best Unproduced Screenplays of 2015

8 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

The annual poll of film executives, inaugurated in 2005, highlights the best unproduced scripts—and, over time, has become a force to be reckoned with, as more than 225 Black List selections have now been made as feature films. Earning more than $19 billion at the box office and racking up 171 Oscar nominations and 35 wins, including Best Pictures "Slumdog Millionaire," "The King's Speech," and "Argo."

To that list, 2016 may see the addition of "Spotlight," the current awards season frontrunner, or "The Revenant," and the former has a strong chance of adding to The Black List's screenplay haul: eight of the last 16 winners, original and adapted, were once featured on the list, including "Juno," "The Social Network," "The Descendants," and "Django Unchained." The Black List has since grown to include a »

Livestream the 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' World Premiere Monday Night

11 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Disney is actually quite worried about piracy (one reason why they didn't screen the film for press until the week of the opening on December 18), so there won't be any phones or cameras allowed inside the Hollywood "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" world premiere on Monday, December 14th. "Force Awakens" was shot on Kodak Film and will screen in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos at Monday night's event, which Time notes "could be the largest Hollywood premiere ever." Disney has already shut down a half-mile section of Hollywood Boulevard to make way for spotlights, bleachers, and red carpets at three theaters—including the venerable Chinese, which held the premiere of the original "Star Wars" in 1977. We will be there! Livestream coverage of the arrivals of cast and filmmakers will begin at Starwars.com starting at 5:30 P.M. Pt. The movie begins at 6:30 pm with a reception to follow. »

'Bubbles' Script, About Michael Jackson's Pet Chimp, Tops Black List

48 minutes ago | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

The 2015 Black List, the annual rundown of Hollywood's best unproduced screenplays, was revealed on Monday, and the top vote-getter was an unlikely choice: A biopic about Bubbles, the chimpanzee that was adopted by Michael Jackson in 1983. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the plot for Bubbles finds the chimp "narrating his own story" and "details his life within The King of Pop's inner circle through the scandals that later rocked Jackson's life and eventually led to Bubbles' release."

Jackson adopted Bubbles from an Austin, Texas research facility in 1983, eventually settling at the Neverland Ranch. »

Lily Tomlin on Her ‘Grandma’ Character: ‘It’s Just Sort of in My DNA’ (Video)

1 hour ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Lily Tomlin said that playing the title character in “Grandma” was incredibly relatable, given Tomlin’s own life experiences. “I know a lot of women who were writers during the resurgence of the feminist movement in the early ’70s,” Tomlin said in an interview for the Actors/Directors/Writers issue of TheWrap Oscar Magazine. “And they made a living and they were quite celebrated in certain circles. And then they sort of lost — their fame waned a bit. So I knew essentially that character.” In the film, Tomlin plays an aging poet whose longtime life partner has died. Except for the last part, »

Stephen Colbert welcomes Vulfpeck to melt our faces off with this performance

1 hour ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Vulfpeck is a funk outfit from Ann Arbor, Mi. They made headlines last year when they released an album titled "Sleepify" on Spotify. There was one catch, the album didn't contain any music. Before Spotify pulled the album from their service they racked up $20,000 which was used to fund a tour of free shows. A friend introduced me to them last night. He queued up this performance from last month when the group performed on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert". Joined by Jon Batiste and Stay Human they performed the absolutely electric "1612". This has got to be one of the tastiest pieces of performance I've seen/heard in a long time. I can't stop watching this. I need more Vulfpeck in my life. You can check out their new record "Thrill of the Arts" over on their website. »

Oscar predictions update: Mark Rylance ('Bridge of Spies') is now Best Supporting Actor frontrunner

1 hour ago | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

Of all top races at the Oscars, few saw as much upheaval over the last week as Best Supporting Actor. We had been debating whether Mark Ruffalo or Michael Keaton would win for current Best Picture frontrunner "Spotlight," but the Golden Globes, Critics' Choice and SAG Awards all snubbed Keaton, and only Critics' Choice recognized Ruffalo. So what does that mean? We have a new Oscar frontrunner: Mark Rylance in "Bridge of Spies." -Break- How many of the 13 performers with Critics' Choice, SAG and Golden Globe nominations will contend at Oscars? Rylance is one of only two actors to earn Supporting Actor noms from all three awards groups over the last week – the other is Michael Shannon ("99 Homes") – and he's the only one of those two who stars in a top contender for a Best Picture nomination ("Spies" ranks seventh in our Best Picture rankings), which makes him the logical choice. »

Gael Garcia Bernal’s Animated Dramedy ‘Zoom’ Bought by Screen Media for U.S.

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Screen Media Films has acquired the U.S. rights to Pedro Morelli’s “Zoom,” starring Gael Garcia Bernal, Alison Pill, Jason Priestley, Mariana Ximenes and Tyler Labine, for a third-quarter release.

The movie, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, is produced by Niv Fichman (“Into the Forest”) and Andrea Barata Ribeiro (“Blindness,” “City of God”), and executive produced by Fernando Meirelles and Paulo Morelli.

Zoom,” directed by Pedro Morelli from Matt Hansen’s script, is an inter-related story between a comic book artist (portrayed by Pill), a novelist (Ximenes) and a film director (Bernal). Each lives in a separate reality, but authors a story about one of the others.

“The part-toon pic’s neatly collapsing structure and pop-art flourishes ensure it’s never dull,” Variety’s Guy Lodge wrote in his review.

Production companies are Rhombus Media and O2 Filmes. The film was produced with the participation of Telefilm Canada, »

Awards Nominations: ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Transparent,’ ‘Veep’ Lead Series

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

It’s been a whirlwind of nominations over the last few days, with Hollywood’s biggest awards groups unveiling their own lists of the best series on television. And each has brought their own idiosyncratic flair to their lists — from the Golden Globes crowning the streaming services to the Screen Actors Guild shunning newcomers in favor of old favorites like “Mad Men.”

So Variety did a little number-crunching: tallying the number of nominations across the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild, the Writers Guild and the Producers Guild. (Note: The Critics’ Choice nominations are not included because of the org’s abbreviated eligibility season.) And the Directors Guild has yet to unveil their awards for this season.

That’s how we came up with our own list of winners. HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and “Veep” and Amazon’s “Transparent” top the list of the most-nominated series across all awards with seven nominations. »
