Alejandro G. Inarritu, Tom McCarthy, Adam McKay, George Miller, Ridley Scott Land DGA Nominations

10 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The Directors Guild of America kept strong guild streaks alive for “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “The Revenant” Tuesday with nominations for filmmakers George Miller and Alejandro G. Iñárritu, respectively.

The two joined Tom McCarthy (“Spotlight”), Adam McKay (“The Big Short”) and Ridley Scott (“The Martian”) in the feature film category.

Historically, the DGA’s film nominations — decided upon by a vast body of more than 16,000 members — are a solid barometer for the best director and particularly best picture categories at the Oscars. Recent DGA-nominated directors who failed to score a nomination from the Academy’s directors branch include Clint Eastwood (“American Sniper”), Paul Greengrass (“Captain Phillips”) and, notoriously, Ben Affleck (“Argo”) and Kathryn Bigelow (“Zero Dark Thirty”).

Recent films nominated by the DGA that failed to net a best picture Oscar nomination include “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” “The Dark Knight,” “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” and “Into the Wild. »

Quantico Star Priyanka Chopra In Talks For Baywatch Remake

11 January 2016 6:34 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Though she’s currently leading ABC’s excellent new drama Quantico on the small screen, Priyanka Chopra is now looking to make her mark on the big screen. In Hollywood, at least.

The actress has been a pretty prominent name in Bollywood for years now, but is only just starting to become familiar to American audiences. That looks set to continue, too, as Paramount is in negotiations with her to join their upcoming Baywatch remake, which also has Zac Efron, Dwayne Johnson and Alexandria Daddario attached. No word yet on which exact role Chopra is being eyed for, but it’s said to be a villainous one, which could be pretty interesting.

In terms of what Damian Shannon and Mark Swift have planned for us with their script, we’ve heard that the basic premise of the reboot is said to revolve around “a hotshot former Olympian who butts heads »

Watch: George Clooney and Julia Roberts in ‘Money Monster’ Trailer

2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

George Clooney becomes a hostage on network TV in the first trailer for TriStar Pictures’ “Money Monster.”

Clooney is playing a glib investment guru with the TV show “Money Monster” who has to deal with a gun-toting investor — played by Jack O’Connell of “Unbroken” — after the investor takes a bath on a tech stock.

“Is this a union thing?” Clooney asks when he spots O’Connell’s weapon.

Julia Roberts stars as the producer, who tells the crew at that point, “Anyone who can get out, get out now.”

O’Connell’s character insists later that he’s not to blame, asserting, “I might be the one with a gun here, but I am not the criminal.”

Jodie Foster directed from a script by Jamie Linden and Alan Difiore & Jim Kouf, based on a story by Difiore and Kouf. Producers are Daniel Dubiecki, Lara Alameddine, George Clooney and Grant Heslov. »

Those fans are going to be both thrilled and saddened with the news that The Silver Chair - the fourth book in C.S. Lewis' fantasy series, is indeed coming to the silver screen. But with such good news, how could a fan be upset?  Leave it to producer Mark Gordon to straddle that line between joy and sorrow, as he recently made some remarks during a junket that Collider happened to be attending. With word from writer David Magee that the film was in the script phase last year, Gordon made some comments about whether this new chapter would include any returning elements from the previous trilogy of films. Gordon's word on the project is as follows:  No, it.s all going to »

Spoiler Alert: The following story contains spoilers from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Do not read ahead if you have not yet seen the movie and want to remain unspoiled for major plot points.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has made more than $800 million domestically since its Dec. 18 release (making it the first film ever to do so), and is rapidly approaching $2 billion worldwide, but director J.J. Abrams says he’s more pleased with the experience of moviegoers than the box office success.

“I’m just incredibly relieved that the movie’s out and it was well-received, and I’m more excited when I hear that people went to see the movie with their parents who took them to see the original movie when they were kids, or who took their own kids who maybe had never seen a ‘Star Wars’ movie and who fell in love with Rey [Daisy Ridley] or »

‘Star Wars’ Director J.J. Abrams Knows ‘Quite A Bit’ About Rey’s Secret Identity, Talks ‘Episode VIII’

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

J.J. Abrams isn’t directing “Star Wars: Episode VIII,” but he knows a lot about it.

Questioned about the theory that new “Star Wars” heroine Rey (Daisy Ridley) could be a Kenobi or a Skywalker, Abrams teased, “I know quite a bit.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday at the Television Critics Association press tour where Abrams was present to support his upcoming Showtime series “Roadies,” the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” director was tight-lipped, but did make it pretty clear that Rey’s backstory has been written.

“Obviously, it’s not for me to talk about in this moment because this is Rian’s story to continue now and the last thing I’m going to do is reveal something that he would be upset about. I want to make sure that Rian gets the courtesy,” Abrams said of his successor Rian Johnson, who will direct “Episode VIII.”

Watch: George Clooney, Julia Roberts & Jack O’Connell Star In The First Trailer For Jodie Foster's ‘Money Monster’

4 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

So it’s kind of like a twist on “Talk Radio,” and “The King Of Comedy” then with more economic outrage? In the Jodie Foster-directed “Money Monster,” George Clooney plays a loudmouth financial TV show host who gets taken hostage while on-air by an angry gunman —who happens to have lost everything by following the talking head’s investment advice. Rising star Jack O’Connell, who lead Angelina Jolie’s “Unbroken,” stars as the livid investor who makes the talk show host reveal secrets on air to survive and Julia Roberts plays the director and executive producer of the "Money Monster" program who is also Clooney's love interest. Clooney’s character is obviously modeled after a “Mad Money,” Jim Cramer-style financial guru, but it remains to be seen if he’ll play the man that obnoxious. While the thriller seems topical in an era of Occupy Wall Street, »

Sundance: Netflix Buys ‘Tallulah’ With Ellen Page, Allison Janney (Exclusive)

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The Sundance Film Festival is still a week away, but Netflix isn’t waiting for the throngs to descend on Park City before making a big move.

The streaming giant has snapped up worldwide streaming video on-demand rights to “Tallulah,” Variety has learned. The story of a young drifter (Ellen Page) who takes a baby from a negligent mother was expected to be one of the hot titles at this year’s festival. It reunites Page with her “Juno” co-star Allison Janney.

Janney plays a woman who mistakenly believes she’s the child’s grandmother in what is being billed as a dramatic comedy.

It’s a homecoming of sorts for writer and director Sian Heder. She has a preexisting relationship with Netflix having worked as a writer and producer on “Orange is the New Black.” Her first short film, “Mother,” was honored at Cannes Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival and Florida Film Festival. »
