Andre Holland Reacts to Algernon's Surprise on 'The Knick' and More Season 2 Shockers

Andre Holland is the best thing about "The Knick." Admittedly, Cinemax's turn-of-the-20th-century medical drama features a bevy of exquisite work, from director Steven Soderbergh — whose roaming camera has an even more experimental edge this year — to Clive Owen, who is finding new depths to Dr. John Thackery, to pretty much the entire cast and crew, who create a time machine every week for eager viewers to step inside. Everyone is working at the top of their game, but Holland, somehow, has exceeded even these industry titans to create a fascinating character played by an equally compelling actor. Holland, who's recently proven his range and dexterity in high-caliber films like "Selma" and "42," was pushed to a new extreme Friday night, as Dr. Algernon Edwards came face-to-face with a person from his past who the audience had no idea even existed. It turns out Edwards is married and has been married this whole time — yes, »

6 New Netflix Shows to Binge Watch in November 2015 (And the Best Episodes of Each)

30 October 2015 12:19 PM, PDT

1. "Marvel's Jessica Jones" (available November 20) Why Should I Watch It? How many female superheroes are there? Okay, maybe quite a few, but how many are on TV? Well, yes, I guess "Supergirl" did just premiere to rave reviews on CBS, but can you binge watch "Supergirl"? Is "Supergirl" a psychological thriller? Does "Supergirl" deal with dark subject matter (possibly including rape) in a gritty, real way? More importantly than contextualizing "Marvel's Jessica Jones" as a female superhero show, let's just look at it for what it is: a damn good looking piece of TV. That should be enough to get excited about. Best Episode: Unknown. Marvel is keeping things pretty close to the vest (big surprise), so we haven't seen any screeners yet. That being said, if any episode is as good as the above trailer, this show is going to be stellar. Read More: Get Ready for "Marvel's Jessica Jones, »

Jennifer Lopez's Cop Drama 'Shades of Blue' Gets Premiere Date

30 October 2015 12:00 PM, PDT

Jennifer Lopez's "Shades of Blue," about a Brooklyn detective forced into secretly spying on her precinct by the FBI after the agency finds her committing a crime, has gotten a premiere date of Thursday, January 14, 2016. The series, which NBC gave a series commitment to nearly two years ago, will debut with a two-hour pilot at 9pm, then begin airing in its usual time slot at 10pm.  Her single-mom character was previously described as "compromised by her colleagues -- all of whom also pitch in to help raise her daughter -- and find[ing] herself faced with the moral dilemma of working against her cop brothers in order to redeem herself."  "Shades of Blue" will mark Lopez's first regular non-reality TV gig in over two decades and will co-star Drea de Matteo.   "Jennifer’s role as Det. [Harlee] Santos is a tour de force," commented NBC. "She carries herself with incredible grit and toughness, »

Espn Nixes Grantland as the Post-Simmons Era Continues

30 October 2015 11:14 AM, PDT

Update: Espn has suspended publication of Grantland, the popular website founded by Bill Simmons, effective immediately. As early as the announcement that Simmons was parting ways with Espn, in May, it appeared that Grantland's mixture of sports, cultural criticism, and in-depth reportage might not survive the post-Simmons era. Sadly, this assessment proved to be correct. (SportsBusiness Journal's Eric Fisher reports that Espn will honor existing Grantland contracts, and wants to use the site's writers elsewhere.) Here's the full statement from Espn: "Effective immediately we are suspending the publication of Grantland. After careful consideration, we have decided to direct our time and energy going forward to projects that we believe will have a broader and more significant impact across our enterprise. Grantland distinguished itself with quality writing, smart ideas, original thinking and fun. We are grateful to those who made it so. Bill Simmons...

Kicking Television: Mindy Kaling, Me, and The Death of Network TV

30 October 2015 10:51 AM, PDT

I have an awkward attraction to Mindy Kaling. Awkward, because I have a complicated relationship with the characters she has played on The Office and Mindy. They seem obsessed with pop culture, their glossy public aesthetic, and the material. So I shouldn’t be attracted to her, because those obsessions annoy me. And yet, I want to have a dysfunctional relationship with her characters. I want to fight about Taylor Swift songs playing in our Mercedes. I want to go through a painful divorce with them, and reconcile one day in the romcom style of the art they find heroic. So, when Fox predictably cancelled The Mindy Project last year because it was a funny, well-written show that didn’t attempt to solve naval crimes, I was somewhat heartbroken. But then Hulu came along. The online network picked up the show, and Mindy and I were reconciled, just like in the movies! »

What to Make of GLAAD’s New Report on the State of Lgbt TV

30 October 2015 8:00 AM, PDT

Depending on how you look at the numbers, things are either better or still sorely lacking for Lgbt characters on television. GLAAD released its annual "Where We Are On TV" report, and its findings defied simple summarization. Overall representation is up. Overall representation of queer people of color and transgender people remains pretty paltry. The confusion of what to make of these statistics is evident in the media headlines about the report: From The A.V. Club: GLAAD’s TV report is full of good news for once From Fortune: GLAAD: Still a long way to go for Lgbt characters on TV From Slate: There’ll Be More Lgbt Characters on TV This Year. So What? If you are relying on headline writers to clear things up, you are out of luck. Also, if you are confused about why GLAAD is still doing its annual counting of the TV gays »

David Lynch Wants Naomi Watts To Join 'Twin Peaks' Revival

30 October 2015 7:45 AM, PDT

David Lynch is now shooting the next season of the revived "Twin Peaks," and working hard to keep as many secrets as possible under wraps until it arrives, likely in 2017. But from what we know so far, the cast is expanding beyond the players from the original two seasons. Amanda Seyfried and Balthazar Getty are among those joining Kyle MacLachlan and Sheryl Lee for more cups of coffee, and slices of pie, and even bigger names could be on the horizon. Deadline recently reported that Jennifer Jason Leigh had joined the ensemble, but buried a bit deeper in their story was the nugget that Lynch was hoping to land more famous faces, including Naomi Watts. Of course, the actress got her big break in Lynch's masterpiece "Mulholland Drive," so it would be quite the reunion for the pair. However, like all things "Twin Peaks," it's unclear what role she'd be taking, »

HBO Dates Martin Scorsese’s ‘Vinyl’ And “Togetherness’ Season 2, But ‘Game Of Thrones’ Might Be Pushed Back

30 October 2015 7:23 AM, PDT

If you’re one for hibernation in early 2016, February of next year would be the month to do it. HBO has confirmed that month will mark the debut for “Vinyl” and the new seasons of “Girls” and “Togetherness.” The most exciting is Martin Scorsese’s return to television with “Vinyl,” a show he co-created with his “Boardwalk Empire” showrunner Terence Winter and Mick Jagger. Ten episodes of the rock 'n roll show will kick off on February 14th with a two-hour premiere directed by Scorsese himself. It’s a ‘70s set show about the music industry during the punk and disco explosion, and is led by Bobby Cannavale and Olivia Wilde (here’s the trailer if you missed it). “Togetherness” is the family drama from the Duplass brothers that stars Mark Duplass, Melanie Lynskey and Amanda Peet. It’s a terrifically underrated show and you should catch-up in time for »

Watch: 'The X-Files' Trailer and Official Poster Hint at More Abductions...For Scully?

29 October 2015 7:07 PM, PDT

Is Dana Scully heading back to space? If the new trailer for "The X-Files" event series is to be trusted, she might just be — with or without her consent. The new trailer (above) shows much of the footage we've seen before, but ends with a shot of Scully staring into a bright, white light above her as the camera dramatically cuts closer and closer to her face. Is a UFO? A government conspiracy? A flashback? Again it appears as though the skeptic and not the believer will be drawn further into the conspiracy both have been tracking their entire careers, though Mulder will undoubtedly be close behind his partner. »

'Burnt' May Flame Out In Theaters, But 10 Years Ago Bradley Cooper Truly Cooked on TV

29 October 2015 2:39 PM, PDT

There is some alternate Earth, somewhere in the multi-verse, where Bradley Cooper has never made the leap from television to film, where Bradley Cooper has never been responsible for $2.4 billion at the box office, where Bradley Cooper has never been nominated for an Academy Award. This is an alternate universe where this fall's "Burnt," starring Bradley Cooper as a bad boy chef looking to make good, never gets made. But it's also an alternate universe where the 2005 series "Kitchen Confidential," starring Bradley Cooper as a bad boy chef looking to make good, lasted more than one season.  Read More: Bradley Cooper-Starring Chef Drama 'Burnt' Pulled From Limited Release As soon as plans for "Burnt" (originally titled "Chef," until the Weinstein Company noticed that another movie already had dibs) were announced, the "Kitchen Confidential" jokes started flying. Both "Burnt's" Adam Jones and "Kitchen's"...

Review: 'Ash vs. Evil Dead' is a Halloween Treat That Should Last Past Thanksgiving

29 October 2015 10:45 AM, PDT

Some heroes age, but they never get old. "Ash vs. Evil Dead" relies heavily on that very conceit, betting on the charm, skill and sheer ability of Ash — and the man who plays him — to carry a franchise that's now 34 years old. The odds of fans getting sick of one of the horror genre's greatest heroes is pretty low, but the possibility can't be discounted: After mixed success skewing toward failure with every additional picture, reviving action icons of yesteryear is a risky proposition. Be it under the same hat (like Arnold Schwarzenegger in "Terminator Genisys" and Sylvester Stallone in "Rambo IV") or a new, similar guise (like both in "Expendables 2" and "3") some of the veterans that we loved in decades past have too many miles on them to keep trucking in 2015. And with Starz banking on "Ash" to last for not just a new movie, but a seasons-long TV series, »

"Vinyl" will debut Sunday, February 14 at 9pm with a two-hour premiere. Where's TV's Golden Age of Equal-Opportunity Sex?

29 October 2015 8:00 AM, PDT

For all the talk about how brilliant and incisive small-screen fare has become in the past decade, you'd think sex scenes might have caught up with the rest of it all. Yes, there are exceptions; the standout episodes of shows that focus on a woman getting off or feature the once-in-a-lifetime depiction of 69'ing on network television get called "revolutionary." But, by and large, when men and women on prime time start boning, they go about it in the same boring, unrealistic way they have since that stuff started being allowed on TV. Sure, they're doing it in more places now -- I think we're definitely in the golden age of sex in darkened hallways and stairwells and other improbable, lurid locations -- but the specifics of what happens remain largely the same. I was reminded of this while catching up on Season Two of "The Affair," which has expanded »

TV Halloween Costume Contest! 22 Characters Compete for Best Dressed

29 October 2015 7:58 AM, PDT

The rules are simple: We make the rules. You vote for the winner. Indiewire has gathered many of our favorite TV characters and pitted them against each other in what we're referring to as the...drum roll, please...2015 TV Halloween Costume Contest! Are all the costumes from 2015? No. Are all the shows still airing? No. Does a great new costume for a character make a show great? Maybe. Judgment is based mainly on the glee you feel when these TV icons don whatever outfits best suit them, but bonus points are given for creativity and remaining true to the character. But our grades are just that: ours. Of course, they're well-reasoned, utterly objective and absolutely correct, but you, dear readers, get to vote for the winner in the poll at the bottom.
