I have been a long time admirer of the talents of both Maggie Smith and Alan Bennett and was much looking forward to seeing this film.Alas I was disappointed, maybe because it felt like an overextended television film, which is possibly the case bearing in mind the involvement of the BBC.I found the character of the Lady to be rather insufferable, and the all round desire to cloak her origins a mystery rather irritating. It was difficult to understand Bennett's decision to let her stay, maybe he was lonely. In any event he must have been loneliest as his friends did not want to stay and his mother ended up in a home.I think that Maggie Smith will pick up an award or two for this.
