Tim Burton’s 3D animation Frankenweenie – based on his own student film – will open The 56th BFI London Film Festival, and director Mike Newell’s (Donnie Brasco, Four Weddings) adaptation of Great Expectations, starring Helena Bonham Carter and Ralph Fiennes, will bring it to a close.

From Wednesday 10 – Sunday 21 October, the Lff will screen 225 films, including 14 World Premieres, 15 International Premieres and 34 European Premieres.

And a competitive streak will flavour this year’s Festival – under the leadership of new creative Director, Clare Stewart – with three awards up for grabs: Best First Feature, Best Documentary and Best Film in the Official Competition.

Martin McDonagh’s (In Bruges) crime comedy Seven Psychopaths, starring Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson, Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell, gets its European Premiere. We’re also looking forward to the UK arrival of Rust and Bone, from A Prophet director Jaques Audiard. And loads more besides, obviously.
