What's New in Version 7.2

Thank you for downloading our latest version of the WSJ app. In this release, we’re very excited to bring you a new way of experiencing stories with WSJ's own built-in virtual reality/360-video player. This new technology brings you inside a video so you can look around in all directions and experience it like you are there. Our 360-video player works both with and without a Google Cardboard headset. These videos do not require a separate app or file download, but they should be viewed on WiFi for the best experience. A special animated video icon will indicate a VR-360 video for you to see.

Also in this version, we've added more slide shows, videos and graphics to iPhone articles. Plus we've made improvements to make the app on iPad and iPhone respond faster, deliver the latest news even more smoothly and tell you when it is checking for updates. We read your comments here in the App Store and more enhancements for both iPhone and iPad users are coming soon.

Customer Reviews

I love it ... except for the self-advertising

The other day I happened to pick up a physical WSJ at a coffee shop after having read my morning iPad version at home. I've subscribed now for perhaps six months and I've dropped the home delivery. At least, the iPad one doesn't get wet.

I was pleased to see that my home version had the same content, and of course the content is always good reporting and well-written opinion. It is a great paper. Ask a person who lives where the execrable San Francisco Chronicle is sold.

My only complaint is that they have a page in between the first page of a story and the next which advertises one of their other services. EVERY story. The net effect after a day or two is that you swipe twice fast so you aren't reading this ad anyway. Two of them tell me that two celebrities I never read of read the WSJ. So some of the advertising is for something I already bought.

iPad version versus print

I have both but plan to let the paper version expire. I use to only read the paper but recently I thought I'd try the iPad since the electronic version was included in my subscription. Have to say that I've been enjoying it more then the paper for the following reasons. The articles are the same and the layout is similar with a headline column on the left that instantly brings up the article when tapped. Easy to read the article with a swipe of your finger. I like the way it asks if you want the current issue. Once downloaded by wifi I can read it anywhere anytime. Even at the breakfast table where I have both I prefer the iPad.

The only disadvantage that I see is not being able to cut out articles or write in the iPad (crossword).

Five star content; app not there

App needs better capability to "page down" and to turn off pictures. Idea - Tap right side of screen to go to next page - left side to go back a page. Scrolling makes me dizzy. Color pictures at each article headline are not necessary and take up valuable space. I need the headline and intro paragraph immediately readable to determine if I'm interested to read more of that article. Embed a photo in the story itself if you must but not above the headline ("or not above the fold").

Swiping wiping left and right to change articles is excellent - kudos - this is very readable and important as if allows me to flip through the various article headlines fluidly.

WSJ should stake their future on getting digital presentation correct and readable in the same way they focused on the readability of the paper copy for decades. I re-subscribed to WSJ out of belief that trusted journalism is a keystone of our society. "Free" news sources are little more than advertisements and poor writing.

The App has gotten a lot better than a few years ago but still can be improved so that the professionalism and readability of WSJ is second to none.
