Sony Alpha 7 II

24.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor | 2.36M-Dot OLED EVF | 5-axis image stabilization

What we like:

  • 5-axis in-body image stabilization
  • Improved phase-detect AF focuses even 3rd party lenses quickly
  • Feature-rich for both stills and video
  • Tilting LCD

What we don't:

  • High ISO performance lags behind full-frame competitors
  • No programmable Auto ISO
  • Poor battery life
  • Tiny, fumbly dials

At the core of the a7 II is a 24.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor and Sony's Bionz X processor. Like all the second-generation a7-series cameras, it gains a more substantial hand grip and the world's first full-frame 5-axis image stabilization system.

Like the original a7, the a7 II has 117 phase detect points allowing for fast and accurate focus within the central region of the frame. AF speed and tracking performance are both improved compared to its predecessor though, and updated firmware allows for high speed phase-detect AF with adapted lenses. This doesn't turn the a7 II into a pro sports camera, nor should you expect a7R II levels of AF performance, but it does mean you should get consistently focused shots during many types of shooting, quickly.

Our tests show the Sony a7 II's 24 megapixel sensor gives pretty much the same image quality as the original a7, which equates to outstanding Raw dynamic range, but slightly sub-par low light (high ISO) performance. JPEG output is also improved over the original a7, but the lack of in-camera Raw conversion is a shame, as it would let you fine-tune your results before Wi-Fi transmission in the field. In-body stabilization helps further increase your sharp-shot count.

"With in-body stabilization, we've been able to confirm between 2 and 3.3 stops of handhold-ability for stills"

The stabilization also helps when trying to capture smooth video, which the camera does much to support. The a7 II offers XAVC S capture at higher bitrates than existing models, and includes focus peaking, zebra warnings and a both headphone and microphone connectors for videographers. Clean output allows the use of an external recorder and the Picture Profile system allows a variety of tone and color options to produce footage that fits well into existing workflows and allows a good degree of color grading. Meanwhile, S-Log2 allows you to capture high contrast scenes and challenging light with ease.

Though it won't take the full frame high ISO crown and its autofocus can't quite keep up with fast action as well as some of the best of its competitors, the a7 II represents an excellent combination of size, pricing and features for a wide variety of shooting styles.
