Smog blankets parts of China

Smog continues to blanket many parts of China, stretching from northwest China's Xinjiang to the eastern coastal province of Jiangsu. Natasha Howitt reports.

This is the scene in China - thick, choking smog and not much visibility at all. The blanket of dense haze extends across large swathes of China, from parts of Xinjiang in the far west, to Shandong and Jiangsu in the east. In Xinjiang, visibility is as low as 20 metres. In Shandong, it was less than 10. Traffic on some highways is at a stand still, ships are stranded at ports, and many residents are decked out in masks. As northern China cools, and most cities turn to coal-fire heating for the winter months, air pollution peaks. But this is not a one-off. Growing public concern about the smog and other environmental risks has led China to declare a " war on pollution". It has vowed to abandon a decades-old economic model - growth at all costs - which has spoilt much of its water, skies and soil. Although the government's environment ministry says the concentration of hazardous, breathable particles dropped in the first half of this year, China does not expect to meet the state standard until 2030.
