A story on video blog EOSHD claims that Samsung has discontinued its NX1 mirrorless camera across Europe. An email that one of the site's forum users claims to be from Samsung states that 'in Europe, we will be discontinuing sales of NX1 cameras for now since there is already much better and upgraded cameras'. We're quite skeptical about this rumor and have reached out to Samsung for comment, so stay tuned. Update: rumor is almost certainly false. Read more

Startup InVisage has announced a smartphone sensor with global shutter for distortion-free video and greater dynamic range than its CMOS rivals. The Quantum13 is a 13MP sensor based on the company's Quantum Film technology that moves away from silicon as the light-sensitive medium. The sensor, now available in small quantities for testing by smartphone makers, can also be built into a smaller package for slimmer smartphones. We spoke to CEO Jess Lee about the sensor and what it brings to the market.

It's not often we get to eat what we photograph, but that's what we did in our latest Field Test. We took the Samsung NX500 into the woods with pro photographer and mycology enthusiast Eirik Johnson to forage for some wild mushrooms. Software developer Macphun has announced a new package designed to help photographers to combine multiple exposures into HDR images. Sony Europe has announced a new Alpha-mount camera, the a68. High on its list of features is a 79-point phase detect '4D FOCUS' AF module likely borrowed from the a77 II. With a 24MP APS-C sensor and Sony's translucent mirror technology, the camera is capable of 8 fps shooting with AF tracking. Read more

Medium format and aerial camera maker Hasselblad has sold a minority stake to the Chinese drone giant SZ DJI Technology Co Ltd, in what the two companies describe as a 'corporate partnership'. Sony's a7 II will receive a firmware update that will boost its AF performance with adapted lenses as well as adding support for uncompressed Raw. The update adds a menu option that pushes the camera to either use phase detection (for speed) or contrast detection (for accuracy) when using non-native lenses. Read more

Manfrotto has announced a new travel tripod in the BeFree series. Only the second BeFree model, the BeFree One is designed to fold away into a compact form and to be lightweight for easy transportation. Most smartphone cameras seriously struggle when it comes to macro photography. A number of accessory macro attachment lenses are available, but many of them are device-specific and bulky enough to discourage carrying every day. Now the makers of the 150x Micro Phone Lens microscope attachment have come up with an ultra-portable and very affordable solution compatible with virtually all smartphone cameras - a stick-on macro lens. Nikon has released updated firmware for its D810 DSLR, taking the software from version C 1.02 to C 1.10. The new firmware brings with it several changes, the majority of which are bug fixes. In addition to correcting issues, v1.10 adds an external recording control option for using the camera to start and stop third-party recorders connected over HDMI. Read more

Google has announced Snapseed version 2.1 for Android, introducing the ability to edit Raw DNG files. While quite a few high-end Android smartphones have allowed Raw shooting for some time, editing those files hasn't been easy. Leica has released a major firmware update for its T (Typ 701) APS-C mirrorless camera. Firmware 1.4 promises to make autofocus twice as fast, and improves touchscreen responsiveness by three times. The company has also announced plans to release two new prime lenses for the T in 2016. Read more

Manfrotto's Digital Director, introduced in April, is a departure from its usual array of tripods and tripod heads. It's a device designed to hold an iPad Air tethered to a DSLR, providing a large live view screen, access to camera controls and wireless sharing options. Shooting with a large screen can be a revelation compared to using a 3" LCD, but the Digital Director is pretty pricey. Is it worth the cost? Read more
