The Buzz: How strange it is to read reviews of The 33 that essentially say the same thing: The movie's fatal flaw is its failure to personalize the story in any effective or resonant way. Of course we find ourselves drawn to the movie due to the mesmerizing global event that it dramatizes, but we're surprised to see just how many critics have called it melodramatic. Perhaps Warner Bros. should have hired a documentary filmmaker instead?
Love the Coopers (2015)
When four generations of the Cooper clan come together for their annual Christmas Eve celebration, a series of unexpected visitors and unlikely events turn the night upside down, leading them all toward a surprising rediscovery of family bonds and the spirit of the holiday.
Director:Jessie Nelson |

The Buzz: With a few weeks to go before Thanksgiving, someone decided it might be a good idea to release a family Christmas movie with an A-list cast but not a flicker of distinction from countless other holiday films. Even the title fails to get you into the holiday spirit. Savvy marketing could keep the movie in theaters throughout the season, however.
My All American (2015)
Freddie Steinmark, an underdog on the gridiron, faces the toughest challenge of his life after leading his team to a championship season.
Director:Angelo Pizzo |

The Buzz: "From the writer of Rudy and Hoosiers" isn't the strongest hook designed to get us to go to the movies, but it's a sure bet that Angelo Pizzo's directorial debut, a dramatized version of college football player Freddie Joe Steinmark's inspirational years at the University of Texas, will find new audiences long after its theatrical run. Interesting to see Finn Wittrock, who plays such outrageous characters on "American Horror Story," in this starring role alongside Aaron Eckhart, an actor who was born to play a coach.
By the Sea (2015) - [Limited]
Set in France during the mid-1970s, Vanessa, a former dancer, and her husband Roland, an American writer, travel the country together. They seem to be growing apart, but when they linger in one quiet, seaside town they begin to draw close to some of its more vibrant inhabitants, such as a local bar/café-keeper and a hotel owner.
Director:Angelina Jolie |

The Buzz:
Angelina Jolie's fourth outing as a director is one of the more peculiar major-studio releases of the year since it's essentially a vanity project (note: we have zero qualms with that) with no set plans for a national release. We haven't seen By the Sea yet, but from the look of the picture, we sense that Jolie is paying homage to '60s European dramas (L'avventura, et al.) that might have forged her love of film. As you can imagine, reviews are all over the place.
Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015) - [Limited]- Drama | Romance
A king, who is loved by his subjects, wants to lead a normal life away from all the responsibilities and his kingdom, while his step brother plans to steal the throne from him. But things are changed when the king finds out the common man who looks exactly like him and they change their identities with each other temporarily.

The Buzz:
There's a somber shadow over Diwali this year, so we're unsure how this romantic drama will perform at the Indian and worldwide box office, but the reunion of Salman Khan and Sonam Kapoor for director Sooraj Barjatya (who gave Khan one of his earliest roles) might bring some added warmth to the holiday.
James White (2015) - [Limited]
James, a 21-year-old New Yorker, struggles to take control of his self-destructive behavior in the face of momentous family challenges.
Director:Josh Mond |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Currently indie movies are having a tough go of it at the box office, but this drama from Josh Mond has earned raves for the first-time director as well as excellent notices for both Christopher Abbott and Cynthia Nixon.
Entertainment (2015) - [Limited]
En route to meet his estranged daughter and attempting to revive his dwindling career, a broken, aging comedian plays a string of dead-end shows in the Mojave desert.
Director:Rick Alverson |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: With the release of his fourth film, writer/director Rick Alverson has proved that his stories are not for everyone, but we love that even the most critical reviewers say he stands out amongst his peers in the homogenized indie-film world. We strongly agree. Entertainment is a sadistic watch -- much more so than even his last project, The Comedy -- that doesn't flinch as it reveals the divide that can open up between one's ambition and the harshness of the real world.
Jag är Ingrid (2015) - [Limited]- Documentary | Biography
A captivating look behind the scenes of the remarkable life of a young Swedish girl who became one of the most celebrated actresses of American and World cinema.
Director:Stig Björkman |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Ingrid Bergman lived in a time when a public scandal could influence you to live in exile, and that she considered Casablanca one of her lesser films. We could go on listing innumerable reasons to consider going to see this documentary on a true icon.
Kilo Two Bravo (2014) - [Limited]
Kajaki Dam 2006. A company of young British soldiers encounter an unexpected, terrifying enemy. A dried-out river bed, and under every step the possibility of an anti-personnel mine. A mine that could cost you your leg - or your life.
Director:Paul Katis |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Acute feelings of dread and claustrophobia well up for us every time we watch the trailer for director Paul Katis' feature debut, which shifts the War in Afghansitan's view to a company of British soldiers hemmed in by their enemy and a heavily mined riverbed. For most of the past year or so, the film was overshadowed by '71; it was a wise move on the part of super-indie distributor Honora to put some distance between the two movies before releasing Kilo Two Bravo.
