The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 Mark III is an enthusiast-level pocketable compact with a 1"-type 20.1MP BSI CMOS sensor.

The RX100 Mark III is the third iteration of Sony’s premium pocket cam and the first to offer any sort of viewfinder. It improves upon the lenses on its predecessors, by offering a 24-70mm equivalent zoom range with a sliding maximum aperture of F1.8-2.8. The previous two RX100s offered zoom ranges of 28-100mm with a maximum aperture of F1.8-4.9. So the Mark III sacrifices zoom reach for a wider starting point and overall faster lens - a solid trade-off in our opinion. Especially considering the optical performance, which puts it at the top of its class.

"The RX100 Mark III’s lens is of one of the most consistently sharp built-in zooms, both across the frame and through the zoom range."

The viewfinder offers 1.44M-dot resolution, while the 3" LCD offers 1.23M-dots. Native ISOs range from 125 to 12800, with the efficient 1"-type sensor rivaling the performance of even larger sensor compacts. The camera is also capable of an impressive maximum frame-rate of 10 fps, though that drops to 3 fps with continuous AF. Helpfully, face detection and general subject tracking continue to focus even in continuous drive, so you can expect the camera to intelligently identify and keep your subject in focus despite movement. On the video side, it can capture 1080p Full HD video at 60p, 30p and 24p, as well as 720p video at 120p for very effective slow motion. And active image stabilization produces steady results from unbelievably shaky footage. The RX100 III also offers a built-in stereo mic, albeit no mic input.

The RX100 Mark III is quite small and will easily slide into your pocket. There's a customizable click-less wheel around the lens. The top of the camera offers a mode dial and a bounce-able pop-up flash. The back offers a dedicated movie record button and click wheel, in addition to a variety of other buttons, many of which can be customized. Given the necessary dearth of buttons due to the small size, we do wish a touchscreen augmented the experience, or that functions could be customized per shooting mode.

Other notable features include built-in Wi-Fi and NFC, which will work with Sony’s Play Memories app, the ability to flip the LCD 180 degrees above the camera for the perfect selfie and a built-in ND filter (with fully auto functionality) for taking advantage of the fast lens in bright light.

This camera is best suited to anyone looking for a pocket camera with strong image quality, a solid set of features, a fast, versatile zoom lens and a built-in viewfinder. The newer RX100 IV has a few extra tricks up its sleeve but the RX100 III is no slouch, and well worth considering.
