Publisher's Summary

A century before A Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros....

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms compiles the first three official prequel novellas to George R. R. Martin's ongoing masterwork, A Song of Ice and Fire.

Before Tyrion Lannister and Podrick Payne, there were Dunk and Egg. A young, naïve but courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals - in stature if not experience.

Tagging along with him is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg - whose true identity must be hidden from all he and Dunk encounter: for in reality he is Aegon Targaryen, and one day he will be king. Improbable heroes though they be, great destinies lie ahead for Dunk and Egg, as do powerful foes, royal intrigue and outrageous exploits.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms brings together for the first time the first three official prequel novellas to George R. R. Martin's ongoing masterwork, A Song of Ice and Fire, set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory.

What the Critics Say

Praise for A Song of Ice and Fire: "In the grand epic fantasy tradition, Martin is by far the best...tense, surging, insomnia-inflicting." (Time Magazine)
"An absorbing, exciting read...Martin's style is so vivid that you will be hooked within a few pages." (The Times)
"The sheer mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads.... Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias." (Guardian)
"Colossal, staggering.... Martin captures all the intoxicating complexity of the Wars of the Roses or Imperial Rome in his imaginary world.... The writing is always powerful...." (SFX)

    "Mildest I've read yet!"

I liked the story, milder than the Ice and Fire series, but giving a nice background to the main series.

    "Disappointed."

A little disappointed here story only gets game of thrones in my opinion towards the last third up until then its an average fantasy book.
All fans must listen and read because its martin but not five stars.
Preferred last narrator of the audiobooks. This one not as gritty.

"Great intro to Westeros if u can't face the Epics!"

Wasn't expecting a "new" George RR Martin book to come out. Therefore, was intrigued when this appeared just as I was finishing the 5th Games of Thrones book! Expecting rants of "why doesn't he concentrate on final installment" (which I've seen for other "epic" novelists who divert temporarily!). However, it appears that these were written as 3 short novellas well before the "real" Game of Thrones.

Therefore, for fans, they're something new to get a short fix of Westeros. For newbies, it's a great intro to Westeros from 2 character perspective... especially if the huge Game of Thrones book set seems too daunting. This is a great was to "put a foot in the water"... see if you like it.

I was surprised how "fully formed" the world is in George's mind at such an early stage. The history is all there... the houses.... it's an exact world, just a 100 years earlier. Had expected to find a more "primitive" back story to the world with some major differences.

So, great self contained book which gives a good view of what to expect from the main set of books!

"Super little story & great narration"

A great side story to game of thrones. Thoroughly recommended. Narrator is different to the one for game of thrones, but that works well and he's very good.

What made the experience of listening to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms the most enjoyable?

So happy for these novellas to be complied into one audiobook. Fantastic back story to A Song of Ice and fire, bonus points for Harry Lloyd narrating

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Great compilation of the Dunk and Eg short stories. Very funny with a great look at the world of Westeros before The War of the Usurper

"Good story and enjoyed the narration"
What did you like most about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?

The fight scenes still as graphic and as exciting as Martins other books

What other book might you compare A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to, and why?

A good intro to the world of Westeros if you can't face the game of thrones series

Which character – as performed by Harry Lloyd – was your favourite?

Narrator is different from the ASOIAF series but he is good

Having read the comic book version some time ago, I wanted to know if the stories would translate well into the audiobook format.
    They do marvelously!

    "Great fun!"

Very good fun, especially for Game of Thrones fans (though, IMO, one needn't be to enjoy this). Harry Lloyd (Viserys Targaryen from the show) is a terrific narrator who does a great job teasing out the nuances of each of the (many) characters. The three stories don't have anything like the epic sweep of the Thrones novels, but they're not supposed to. They're smaller, lighter, and more comic. That said, there's still quite a bit of action and the intricate world building Martin is rightly so renowned for. A thoroughly enjoyable audiobook. I strongly recommend it.

Enjoyed this book. Entertaining and easy to read. I hope they include this in the game of thrones story, I think they as a prequel.
