From the very beginning I was hooked, it’s got appealing characters and magic…in general, a little something for everyone interested in YA fantasy. There’s the 14 year old female protagonist named Scarlet, talking wolves, family, fairies, big monsters, creepy people, good people, a library, two worlds in one and….a quest. While the story may be intended for female pre-teens and teens, I believe that all ages and both genders will enjoy it. Overall the story is filled with hope, loyalty, bravery, insightful family ties and lasting friendships.
The narrator, Harriet Stevens, has the perfect voice for the story and while not all her voices are distinctly different her performance is excellent. Harriet Stevens gives life to each character and to the book as a whole by providing the right tone and intonation whether during emotional upheavals, moments of loving tenderness, or wit and humor.
There is one observation I must make. Scarlet seems to follow much the same path as Frodo in Lord of the Rings; I realize many authors throughout history have taken similarities from popular stories of the day and made them their own but this is worth mentioning, especially since LOTR was given a brief mention. The quest begins with Dark Lords or Mortada, (fortunately these creatures are now a cross between the beauty of Galadriel’s woodland fairies and the Nazgul), then on to see the fairies (replacing elves), and off to the dwarves…, finally the group is split. What makes it perfect for all ages is that where LOTR is dark and often times quite gruesome, Scarlet and the Keepers of Light has a lighter flavor which is sometimes a bit scary but mostly it’s family and amazing friends helping a young girl find her own magic.
There are many incredible and exciting scenes throughout this first in the series story and readers will stayed engaged right from the beginning and enjoy every moment of Scarlet’s adventures. Only the future will tell if Scarlet Hopewell stands the test of time but I believe because of it’s charm, appeal and strength it will. I look forward to the next book in this series and thank the author, Brandon West, for his time and hard work in bringing not only Scarlet but all his characters into being.
Please forgive any spelling errors in names but having only audio to work with phonetic spelling is all I can do. I was given this audiobook in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Scarlet Hopewell keeps dreaming about a magical world, a world where winged creatures sculpt with light, where dogs talk, and where Scarlet is the guest of honor at a wonderful party in a castle under the roots of a mighty oak tree. One day her father brings home an abandoned puppy who captures Scarlet's heart. Dakota is fun and loving and smart. Actually, he's really smart - too smart. And a lot too big. News shows start to take an interest.
Being a huge nerd, I love Star Wars and have since the first time I ever saw it. After reading this in the synopsis, "Alexandra Bracken delivers a captivating retelling of Star Wars: A New Hope like you've never experienced before", I had to know more.
So here I am left with a dilemma, how does one write a review of one of the most iconic and influential, at least to me, stories of all time? Answer is I wouldn't even try.
What I will do is tell you about how I felt listening to a familiar, yet new, version of the classic.
The book was broken up into three aptly named parts that didn't overlap. The Princess part was told from the point of view of Princess Lia. Starting with her ship being boarded by Darth Vader and the Stormtroopers. To being held captive and tortured by Vader and the interrogation droid and the destruction of her home world Alderaan. The next part was The Scoundrel. Told from the point of view of Han Solo. Picking up in the cantina in Mos Eisley. Moving through his meeting of Obi Wan and Luke to the infiltration of the Death Star and ultimately the death of Obi Wan. The final part was The Farm Boy. Taking us through the escape of the Death Star to it's ultimate destruction.
I am very happy that Alexandra Bracken didn't try to reinvent anything. She simply added the thoughts and insights from each of the parts main characters. While also filling in some story that was not explicitly mentioned in the original. For example, she told us of Lea's backstory of being on the senate, we get to find out that Han Solo isn't quite as two dimensional as many think he is, and that like had to go through trials before being allowed to fly an X-Wing with the rebels.
If you are a Star Wars fan and are open to story that you know, yet you only know the surface. You should really check Star Wars: A New Hope: The Princess, the Scoundrel, and the Farm Boy out. You just might be pleasantly surprised as I was.
Marc Thompson's performance was absolutely uncanny, flamboyant and extraordinary. Somehow he has figured out a way to almost flawlessly mimic all of the characters of Star Wars that we know and love. Simply said he nailed it! He performed all of the male roles throughout the story and was the primary narrator for the final two parts. Rebecca Soler did a fantastic job too. She performed all of the female dialog in the audiobook and was the primary for the first part. I cannot think of any other voice actors that could have pulled off as much magic as these two.

Keaghan in the Tales of Dreamside: Dreamside Omnibus, Books 1-5 by J. Daniel Batt. This was right up there in the top 10 of children’s authors I have listened to over the years in audio format. The 7 hrs. and 46 min book had a lot in the time it took from word one to the last word spoken by the narrator. The narrator, Mike Pryc, is the first experience for me listening to him. I love his voice and can’t wait to hear more of his work. So let me get started with this story or should I say stories. This book contains 5 stories all conceding with the previous story.
I felt that this book is meant for children in the age group of 8-14. Younger children may enjoy it but may find some of the stories dialog a bit much for them. So may not hold their attention as long. Now for older children 15+ depending on the child would either enjoy it or find it too young for them. Now for myself being in an older bracket well I just found this downright fun to listen to!
I feel that this story lends itself to that fantasy of a dream world that children would only hope to be part of. Its characters and the character names that J. Daniel Batt created for each of them. Well, let just say they were just downright pure fun! From the little wispy character, Spingalli to the fierce characters of the Tomsi and the Cra-gin. Keaghan is a young boy that finds himself caught up in the Dreamside of his home. He also finds out there are other sides as well to his home. As his adventures take him from one story to the next he learns more about himself as he goes along. Guess what so will the reader. I could not help but, to kind of think of these stories sort of like parables. This book cannot but teach each of us to take away a small lesson. It was such an enjoyable listen.
The author leaves you with that there will be more to follow from the different statements the characters make throughout the book. Which makes me happy and I can’t wait to listen to the next series of stories. This is a book that I want my niece and nephew to listen to. Nothing is better than the young person’s perspective that this book was written for.
The narrator, Mike Pryc, was an excellent actor lending his voice to each and every character in this book. Yes, actor to me a narrator is a person that reads a book from start to finish. A narrator for a documentary that just has that same steady voice throughout. Not Mike! His voice had lent itself to so many characters I lost count. Each unique that if this book does not hold a child’s attention well I don’t know what will! My favorite character voices was of Spingalli and Kitley. Though I did like the others as well.
As an adult I find the cover interesting but, too much going on it. As a child I know they would pass the book right up. A simpler cover of Keaghan and one of the wispy characters hiding in his hair as they do throughout the book. That would catch their attention. They would want to know who these little people are.
