Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division

Point Mugu and China Lake, Calif., are the primary locations of the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (NAWCWD). Point Mugu manages the Weapons Division's sea range; China Lake, the land range. Both provide logistics and in-service support for guided missiles, free-fall weapons, targets, support equipment, crew systems and electronic warfare.

NAVAIR Point Mugu is located at Naval Base Ventura County, just west of Los Angeles. It was established in 1946 as the Navy's first instrumented missile test sea range. It offers enormous geographic diversity: vast ocean, deep water ports, protected islands within restricted air space. The 36,000 square-mile sea range, which includes San Nicolas Island, supports both developmental and operational test and evaluation of missiles, free-fall weapons and electronic warfare systems.

Point Mugu supports the Fleet electronic warfare (EW) community from concept development to year-round EW Intelligence operational support. Point Mugu also supports fleet training and tactics development, particularly large scale, major exercises, including Fleet battle experiments on the Pacific Sea Range.

Electronic warfare products and areas of expertise: Self-protect and stand-off jammers, infrared countermeasures, radar systems, chaff and decoys, threat simulation, intelligence / sensor engineering, jamming technique optimization, mono- and bi-static radar cross-section measurement.

Weapon System Integration and Electronic Warfare: In-house expertise includes requirements definition through mission system design and DT, trainer / support equipment upgrades, handbooks, mission planning, fleet support, foreign military sales, and operational EW intelligence analysis and software updates, and EW reach-back support. With current emphasis on network centric warfare, the concept of weapon / platform integration is being extended to battlespace integration. Point Mugu is interconnecting virtual, real, and hardware-in-the-loop facilities across NAVAIR and at other services to develop and test network interoperability between various weapons systems.

Facilities 

  • 36,000 square miles restricted airspace over sea, expandable to 125,000 square miles
  • Two airfields: one on San Nicolas Island and one at Naval Base Ventura County, Point Mugu
  • Sea Range is the largest and most heavily instrumented air / sea range in the United States. The Range Operations Center hosts and monitors complex full battle group Fleet exercises involving aircraft, surface ships, and submarines.
  • San Nicolas Island, 60 miles offshore, is used for littoral warfare training, including theater warfare exercises and includes launching facilities and a 10,000-foot runway.
  • Radar Reflectivity Laboratory is the Navy's largest indoor chamber.
  • Missile Systems Evaluation Laboratory is a $45-million facility with 123,000 square feet of special-purpose laboratories.
  • Surface Craft Division at Port Hueneme operates target boats and hulks and provides range surveillance and target recovery.
