Noomi Rapace to Play Amy Winehouse in a Biopic

just now | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

Every music icon whose life ended in tragedy is obligated to receive a biopic, so it's not surprising to learn that there's an Amy Winehouse movie in the works. What might be a bit surprising is who they're casting in the role.  According to Screen Daily, Subotica Films, which previously produced the Jimi Hendrix biopic Jimi: All Is By My Side, is in talks with Swedish actress Noomi Rapace (Prometheus) to portray the Grammy-winning singer. Interestingly, Rapace is about to turn 36, while Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning at age 27. It's not too uncommon for biopics to cast actors of inauthentic ages. At 45, Kevin Spacey played Bobby Darin, who died at age 35, in Beyond the Sea. And until a lawsuit halted its development, a Janis Joplin biopic was set to...

Dragon Tattoo Sequel May Have Found A New Lisbeth Salander

20 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

While her star has risen to great heights during the past couple of months, Alicia Vikander could use something most actors chase their whole careers: a franchise where they get to be front and center. She just might get her wish, as she's taken the lead in the race to replace Rooney Mara in Sony's upcoming adaptation of The Girl Who Played With Fire. According to a recent report, Sony is anxious to get the Millenium franchise back on track with a lower budgeted follow up to David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. While the initial film didn't exactly set the box office on fire, the property is still a hot commodity in Hollywood . especially with The Girl In The Spider's Web extending the franchise's lifespan past the original trilogy authored by late writer Stieg Larsson. With her career still blooming, and her pay scale still within »

Film Review: ‘They Call Me Jeeg’

13 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Italy finally has its very own superhero, and his capacity for mixing social critique with heroic feats is boundless. Gabriele Mainetti’s thoroughly enjoyable, surprisingly plangent and gritty “They Call Me Jeeg” features a two-bit criminal loser who stumbles upon his powers, Toxic Avenger-style (without the deformity), and learns to care about humanity thanks to a traumatized woman who’s convinced he’s the Japanese manga character Steel Jeeg. Mainetti may be a novice helmer but there’s no trace of the beginner here, with style and execution earning top marks along with modest yet well-handled f/x. The real standout, though, is how he combines superhero tropes with Italian social and political ills, making “Jeeg” a likely cross-generational sleeper hit following a projected February opening. Offshore chances look promising.

The 1970s cartoon series “Steel Jeeg,” created by Go Nagai, has long been popular in Italy, so it’s not »

Watch: George Lopez Parodies Donald Trump’s ‘SNL’ Hosting Gig

18 minutes ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Funny or Die has teamed up with George Lopez to parody a certain controversial Republican presidential candidate.

Lopez makes his return to Funny or Die as Donaldo Trumpez, a Mexican version of Donald Trump. Trump has been under fire for controversial comments about the Hispanic community.

In the clip, Trumpez hosts the popular “Noche De Sabado En Vivo” — which reads “Saturday Night Live” in Spanish — and entertains the audience with guests, parodies and characters.

The cold open has Lopez’s Trumpez dressed in a large costume for the character, Humpty Trumpty.

“Humpty Trumpty sat on a wall,” sang a Mariachi band in full swing. “Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.” Trumpez quickly adds, “In the polls!”

Trumpez recites a speech in Spanish that reflects many of Trump’s controversial remarks: referring to a female candidate as “ugly,” assuming a foreigner to be a rapist and building a wall that borders Mexico and the United States. »

Spectre is a Fun, Fine End to Daniel Craig's Postmodern Take on James Bond

56 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

The new James Bond movie Spectre makes a satisfying final chapter to the four-film saga of Daniel Craig’s 007, even if that saga turns out to be less than the sum of its parts. But it was a fascinating journey, wasn’t it? Instructive in all sorts of ways. In a world of “franchises,” tentpoles,” “reboots,” and “universes” (A world of universes? Indeed), the Craig Bonds are prime examples of what happens when brainy, intensely self-conscious fans — people who grew up with these series — get hundreds of millions of dollars to engage in a dialogue with the past. It’s fanboy culture on an undreamed-of scale.Craig’s Bond has truly been revisionist. Whereas the 007 of yore — embodied by Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan — arrived onscreen fully formed, his license to kill exercised to the point of being casual, his yen for women and »

Happy birthday, Tilda Swinton: Her 7 definitive roles

Let's celebrate her provocative goodness with a quick recap of her seven essential roles. Jump to the bottom for a gallery of her finest onscreen looks. "I Am Love" A lot happens in "I Am Love" (including a bizarre death that still haunts me) but its most notable scene is an erotic version of "Babette's Feast." "Snowpiercer" Tilda has made a number of polarizing movies, and "Snowpiercer" is no exception. Her teeth and glasses may be its most dystopian elements. "Orlando" The definitive Tilda movie. "Orlando" is based on Virginia Woolf's complex text, and the film is one of the few in Tilda's filmography to rise to her peculiarity. Film Review: ‘The Automatic Hate’

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The family you never knew you had turns out to be the family you may wish you never met in Justin Lerner’s “The Automatic Hate.” This arresting seriocomedy deftly walks a tightrope between droll and tense, over a gaping pit of crazy. It will require very careful handling to access appreciative audiences, not least because broadcasting some of its more marketable aspects would amount to major plot spoilage. Film Movement currently plans a limited theatrical release early next year.

Domestic life is already bumpy enough for mild-mannered Bostonian Davis (Joseph Cross): We meet him just as he’s returning from the bathroom to find himself locked out of his own bedroom because (for reasons that are only made clear much later) his professional-dancer girlfriend, Cassie (Deborah Ann Woll), abruptly needs some “alone time.” He’s a successful chef, yet his emotionally distant parents, both academics (Richard Schiff and »
