Consider This: How Fisher Stevens Rebooted His Career and Joined Forces With Leonardo DiCaprio to Save the World

7 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

In 2004, Fisher Stevens went to Ohio with a coalition of artists to help John Kerry get elected president. It didn’t work, but Stevens — an actor-turned-director best known for campy roles in a string of ’80s and ’90s films such as “Short Circuit” and “Hackers” — emerged a changed man. “It was a fucked-up time,” Stevens recalled over lunch near his offices in downtown Manhattan, “but this a whole other fucked-up time.”

Flash forward a dozen years and Stevens is enmeshed in a new stage of his career, as a prolific documentarian who moonlights as an actor. Six years ago, he won an Oscar as a co-producer of “The Cove,” photographer-turned-filmmaker Louie Psihoyos’ thrilling exposé of the Japanese fishing industry. By then, he had stepped away from GreeneStreet Films, the independent production company he started in 1996 with John Penotti. That same year, Stevens launched Insurgent Media with Andrew Kirsch and Erik Gordon »

Men of ‘Law & Order: Svu’ Speak Out Against Sexual Assault in PSA

24 October 2016 11:03 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The male stars of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” appeared in a series of public service announcements on the Joyful Heart Foundation YouTube channel to stand up to sexual assault.

In a video titled “Enough PSA: Boys Will Be Boys,” stars including Chris Meloni, Ice-t, Dann Florek, and Danny Pino repeat the phrase “boys will be boys” in turn, emphasizing that it is not an excuse for sexual assault.

In “Enough,” the actors read more common excuses for sexual assault and reasons why people ignore it.

At the end of each video, a message reads “Enough. Together we can change this culture. Pledge #changetheculture.”

The series of videos was made in collaboration with the Joyful Heart Foundation, an organization founded in 2004 by “Svu” actress Mariska Hargitay which helps heal, educate, and empower survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse.

Hargitay was inspired to create the foundation while researching for her role on “Svu.”

Now that this misnomer has been addressed, we can dive into the tedious thriller, “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back,” another vehicle for Tom Cruise to kick ass and take names. What Mindy Newell Is Watching…

10 October 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Well, the fall television season has begun, which means I’ve been watching the return of my favorite series and the premiere of new shows that have tickled my interest. Here’s a rundown.

Timeless (Mondays, 10 P.M., NBC)

Everyone who reads this column regularly knows that I’m a nut for alternate history and time-travel stories, so of course I was going to check out Timeless, which premiered last week, October 3… and, of course, I missed it. So on Saturday I logged onto Hulu and caught up.

The premise is a familiar one to science fiction geeks like me – what happens to our present if someone goes back and either deliberately or accidentally changes the history we know? This is best illustrated, at least for me, by Ray Bradbury’s classic and beautifully written “A Sound of Thunder,” in which a big game hunter travels back to the Jurassic »

Blindspot Season 2 Episode 4 Review: If Beth

5 October 2016 10:21 PM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

It feels like it's going to become a thing now for the Blindspot characters to have some excuse to dress up every season. While Blindspot Season 3 Episode 4 even references the first time that happened during Blindspot Season 1 Episode 9, "If Beth," it's not as strong of an episode, no matter how fun it is to look at Jaimie Alexander and Sullivan Stapleton in formal wear.

The main plot line of a murderous assassin who winds up being a burned CIA operative has the requisite amount of plot twists but it feels as if it takes too long to get to them. The entire museum gala sequence borders on making the FBI team look dumb with how Elizabeth Gubara is able to repeatedly stay multiple steps ahead of them and escape even as they're supposed to be locking down the building.

Yes, she's CIA, but our team is supposed to be pretty smart too. »

With production slated to begin this coming January on Marvel's Black Panther, the studio has brought on Person of Interest star Winston Duke as M'Baku, a.k.a. Man-Ape. This villainous character is said to have a "key role" in this adaptation. It isn't known if Man-Ape will be aligned with the movie's main villain, Erik Killmonger, played by Michael B. Jordan, but this casting may shed some light on a cryptic statement by Lupita Nyong'o.

During Marvel's Comic-Con presentation, the studio brought out Chadwick Boseman as T'challa, who was introduced in Captain America: Civil War along with his co-stars Michael B. Jordan (Erik Killmonger), Danai Gurira (Okoye) and Lupita Nyong'o (Nakia). During interviews after the presentation, Lupita Nyong'o revealed the first story details, stating that Black Panther's "leadership is threatened when two foes come together," as T'challa seeks the help of both the CIA and the Dora Miljae. »

Dick Wolf is adding yet another project to his lengthy credits. The super producer is working on an unscripted FBI series at USA Network, sources tell Variety.

The show, which is being produced in conjunction with the FBI, is currently in production and has been shooting in New York for quite some time, according to insiders, who say the network is eyeing a six to eight episode order. Wolf and Wolf Reality’s Tom Thayer will serve as executive producers, along with Marc Levin of Brick City TV and Anne Beagan from the FBI New York office of public affairs.

The project brings Wolf to USA Network with an original series, though the cable net is already home to his “Law & Order” franchise, airing upwards of 100 hours of repeats per month, which are very popular with the USA audience.

The unscripted series is a nice companion to Wolf’s scripted FBI series, which »
