ABC’s “20/20,” featuring an exclusive interview with Leah Remini and her days as member of the Church of Scientology, soared to its best averages since last spring’s blockbuster interview with Bruce Jenner. Fox won the night with Game 3 of the World Series, while NBC’s season premiere of “Grimm” opened lower than last year but was the network’s top show.
In delayed viewing, meanwhile, CBS’ “Supergirl” moved past the 16-million viewer mark in Nielsen’s “live plus-3” estimates and remains the fall’s most-watched series premiere. It didn’t get quite the 3-day lift of NBC’s “Blindspot” premiere, though, so it ranks second to the Peacock program among the fall debuts in key demos.
Looking at Friday’s action, “20/20” averaged a 1.7 rating and 8.2 million viewers overall in the 10 o’clock hour — well above the show’s same-day averages this fall (1.2 in 18-49, 4.9 million viewers). The 1.7 in 18-49 ties with two episodes of the network’s “Shark Tank” as the top-rated series telecast on the night this fall, while the 2.5 rating in adults 25-54 for “20/20” last night is the best for any Friday series this fall. These were the newsmagazine’s highest scores since April’s two-hour Diane Sawyer sitdown with Jenner, which scored a monster 5.2 in the demo and more than 17 million total viewers.
Remini spent over 30 years practicing Scientology before leaving the church in 2013. She appeared on “20/20” ahead of the release of her memoir, “Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology.”
Reliable ratings information wasn’t available for Fox’s coverage of Game 3 of the World Series, but the New York Mets’ 9-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals averaged a 3.1 rating in adults 18-49 and 12.5 million viewers overall on the network’s stations from 8 to 11. If it edges up in the finals as expected, it would move ahead of the demo score for last year’s Game 3 (3.1).
At NBC, “Undateable” (0.7/3 in 18-49, 2.7 million viewers overall) and “Truth Be Told” (0.7/3 in 18-49, 2.3 million viewers overall) were in line with last week, though the former has a pretty good shot at rounding up to a 0.8 in the nationals. NBC decided after last week’s performance to trim the episode-order count for “Truth Be Told” from 13 episodes to 10.
The comedies led into the season premiere of “Grimm” (1.1/4 in 18-49, 4.0 million viewers overall), which was down 0.3 but matched its season finale from May. The drama hasn’t done a higher same-day rating in its last 11 episodes (dating back to Feb. 6).
At ABC, “Last Man Standing” (1.2/5 in 18-49, 6.8 million viewers overall) and “Dr. Ken” (1.2/5 in 18-49, 5.8 million viewers overall) held steady despite tough competition from the World Series. And at 9, “Shark Tank” continued its lackluster performance this fall (1.4/5 in 18-49, 6.1 million viewers overall), though it was the night’s top entertainment series in the demo.
CBS saw “The Amazing Race” (1.2/5 in 18-49, 6.1 million viewers overall) and “Hawaii Five-0” (1.1/4 in 18-49, 8.1 million viewers overall) on the high side, but “Blue Bloods” was a little low (1.1/4 in 18-49, 9.5 million viewers overall) and was likely impacted by the stronger “20/20” on ABC.
In Live+3 estimates for Monday, “Supergirl” grew 1 full ratings point in 18-49 (to 4.1) and 1.2 points in 25-54 (to 5.2) while gaining 3.17 million total viewers to reach 16.13 million. It remains the fall’s most-watched new series but it now ranks second to “Blindspot” among premieres in both 18-49 (4.45) and 25-54 (5.7).
The premieres of “Supergirl” (3.14) and “Blindspot” (3.11) had technically tied at 3.1 in adults 18-49 in Nielsen’s same-day rating, but the NBC series spiked by a monster 1.34 in three-day delayed viewing. The L+3 gap between the two (1.34 vs. 0.99) is not surprising since 10 p.m. dramas tend to see bigger lifts in general, and a strong lead-in from “The Big Bang Theory” gave “Supergirl” an edge in live viewing.
“Supergirl” last week became in the key demos of adults 18-49 and 25-54 (tied in both with NBC’s “Blindspot”) and total viewers.
